Discover More: Exciting Things to Do in Cebu

Cebu, one of the Philippines’ most vibrant and historically rich provinces, is a major hub in the Central Visayas region. It boasts a harmonious blend of urban and natural attractions, making it a captivating destination for travelers. The capital city, Cebu City, is known for its significant historical landmarks such as the Magellan’s Cross and the Basilica del Santo Niño.

These sites offer a glimpse into the island’s rich colonial past . They represent its role in the spread of Christianity in the Philippines. Beyond its historical significance, Cebu City is a bustling metropolis with a lively nightlife. On every street there are many modern shopping malls. Also, a burgeoning culinary scene that offers a wide array of local and international cuisines suitable for everyone.

Outside the urban areas, Cebu is renowned for its breathtaking natural landscapes. The island is fringed with stunning white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, perfect for diving and snorkeling. Popular beach destinations like Mactan Island and Malapascua Island draw visitors with their beautiful coral reefs and diverse marine life.

In the south, Oslob offers the unique experience of swimming with whale sharks. The town of Moalboal is famous for its vibrant sardine run. Additionally, the inland areas feature lush mountains, scenic waterfalls such as Kawasan Falls. For hiking lovers, there are many hiking trails that appeal to adventure seekers. This diverse range of attractions makes Cebu a must-visit destination for those looking to experience the best of both urban and natural wonders.

It’s holiday again, and I know you are thinking of where to go. Here are a few places I ventured to enjoy in August 2023 and recommend to you.

    1.  Eat Lechon at Cebu street restaurants, markets or supermarkets

Lechon is one of the Philippines’ signature dishes. If you don’t try it, your trip to the country is incomplete. That’s what I heard, so I made sure to complete my trip by sampling this renowned dish. I chose to eat at a medium-sized mall to ensure the hygienic conditions. But you can enjoy this cultural delight at street stalls, where it’s sold every day. There was no doubt, it is a favorite among locals.

Lechon is a grilled pig seasoned with Filipino spices. It is cooked over heat for hours, causing the fat on the skin to shrink. It wasn’t as fatty as I had expected. It’s typically served with rice wrapped in leaves, giving it a yellowish color. While it looked appealing, I didn’t find it very tasty.

For me, the lechon was extremely salty or had an ingredient that was harsh to my taste buds. Despite that, I checked this experience off my list. I recommend it to others, as they might not have the same issues. Please let me know how it was for you in the comments section below!

    2. Eat guava

Guavas are a special fruit that grow only in tropical regions. In Cameroon, we have plenty of them, though they are quite small in size. In contrast, the guavas in the Philippines are extremely large. Initially, I doubted they would be as juicy as ours, but after eating just two, I felt pleasantly full. They made for the perfect fruit breakfast. If you’ve never tried guavas before, now might be the perfect time to give them a taste. Please leave a comment and share your thoughts!

Guavas are a powerhouse of nutrients, offering a wide range of health benefits. Rich in dietary fiber, they aid in digestion and promote a healthy gut. Packed with vitamin C, guavas boost the immune system, helping the body fight off infections. They are also a good source of antioxidants like lycopene and quercetin, which protect against cellular damage and reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Additionally, the potassium in guavas helps regulate blood pressure, while their low glycemic index makes them a diabetic-friendly fruit. Overall, incorporating guavas into your diet can enhance your overall health and well-being.

    3. Take pictures at the Cebu heritage statute

The Heritage of Cebu Monument is a grand tableau located in the historic Parian district of Cebu City. This impressive structure, crafted by renowned Filipino artist Eduardo Castrillo, depicts significant events and figures in Cebu’s history from the time of Rajah Humabon to the recent political era.

The monument, made of concrete, bronze, brass, and steel, stands as a testament to the rich cultural and historical heritage of Cebu.

It includes representations of the arrival of Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan, the conversion of Rajah Humabon and his wife to Christianity, and the celebrated Battle of Mactan where native chieftain Lapu-Lapu defeated Magellan.

The monument is not just a tribute to Cebu’s past but also a reminder of its resilience. It showcases the evolution through the centuries.

Visitors to the site are treated to a visual narrative that captures the essence of Cebu’s journey. It was free. This place is a blend of Cebu’s indigenous roots with the influences of Spanish colonization. The detailed sculptures and dynamic poses of the figures bring to life the pivotal moments in Cebu’s history.

Thus, making it an educational and inspiring experience. The Heritage of Cebu Monument stands as a proud symbol of the island’s enduring spirit and cultural legacy. It invites locals and tourists alike to reflect on the historical events that have shaped the vibrant community of Cebu.

Upon first sight, I was in awe. The size is massive and imposing. I admired every piece of creative art on it. These pictures don’t do it justice.

    4. Take a walk around Cebu city

Walking the streets of Cebu is an invigorating experience, full of vibrant sights and sounds. The colorful jeepneys, adorned with bright murals and flashing lights, weave through the busy streets, adding a lively touch to the urban landscape.

Skyscrapers rise majestically against the skyline, symbolizing the city’s blend of modernity and tradition. The happy faces of the locals, always ready with a warm smile or a friendly greeting, add to the charm of the city.

I loved exploring the city on foot, soaking in the bustling atmosphere and the rich tapestry of everyday life.

When I grew tired, hopping onto a tricycle offered a convenient and enjoyable way to continue my journey. These small, motorized vehicles, often vibrantly decorated, navigate the narrow streets with ease.

Stopping to enjoy fresh coconut from a street vendor was a delightful treat. believe me, the refreshing juice provided a perfect respite from the tropical heat. Every moment spent in Cebu was a testament to its dynamic culture and welcoming spirit.

Cebu walking down the streets of Cebu

To visit some places in Cebu, I used GPS and walked. Cebu is safe. Some people called out to greet me, and several wanted to have conversations but spoke only Tagalog. Everyone was willing to help me with directions.

My favorite thing to admire on the streets of Cebu was the colorful jeepneys. I boarded a few and had a truly unique experience listening to their loud music. Instead of booking rides on apps like Uber, I recommend taking a regular jeepney. They travel almost everywhere on the island and are very affordable. It was a great opportunity to ask questions, interact with locals, and tour the city like a native.

    Conclusion

Cebu is a captivating blend of historical landmarks, urban excitement, and natural beauty. Known for its rich cultural heritage, Cebu City features significant sites like the heritage statutes, modern shopping malls, and a diverse culinary scene.

Beyond the urban areas, Cebu’s stunning beaches, crystal-clear waters, and lush mountains attract adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. Friendly locals, colorful jeepneys, and a safe environment enhance the charm of exploring Cebu, making it a must-visit destination for travelers. I regret not creating time to visit any of the many beaches because of the distance and a slightly terrifying situation that happened to me. I will explain that in detail in another article.

What does it mean to love the world?

If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

    1 John 2:15

As someone who preaches strongly on the gospel of grace, one of the most common questions I get asked is this:

Pastor Joseph Prince, are you saying that everything is just by grace and we can live any way we want with total disregard for God? Are you saying that we don’t have to serve Him?

Well, ask yourself this: When someone genuinely encounters the Father’s love, favor, and blessings in a way that is totally undeserving, how do you think they will live?

Take a moment to put yourself in the shoes of the prodigal son in Luke 15. After all the wrongs you have committed against your father, he gives you a lavish reception. He filled him with hugs and kisses.

You just went from starving to being clothed with a fresh clean robe. Equally, by wearing the ring of your father, authorizing you to make payments in his name. And as if that is not enough, your father has invited all the neighbors. He even killed a choice calf, and they are having a homecoming barbecue party with music. This included dancing in your honor.

Now, does this make you want to rebel against your father again by leaving home and going back to the filthy pigpen, wallowing in the mud and feeding on things that will never satisfy you? Of course not!

There is a great misunderstanding that believers who struggle with and indulge in sin, and who are still in love with the world, do so because they don’t love God enough. Believers are told to love God more. Thinking that if people love God more, they would love sin and the world less.

How to test your love for the world

But God opened my eyes one day to the real reason believers are still entangled with sin and the world. I’ve never heard anyone preach this before, so this is fresh from heaven. The apostle John tells us, “If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him” (1 John 2:15).

Notice that it is the love of the Father, not the love for the Father. So people who love the world and are trapped by worldly pursuits are actually people who don’t know him. Or don’t believe in their hearts the love of the Father for them.

Rather than messages of “You’ve got to love God more!” what we really need is more preaching that is all about the love of the Father. It will never be about our love for Him, but His love for us.

Beloved, when people come to truly know and believe the Father’s love for them and have it burning in their hearts, they will no longer want to go out and live like the devil. There is just something powerfully transformative about grace.

That’s what right believing in the Father’s love brings. If you’ve tasted and savored grace from your heavenly Father, you never want to live in the wilderness of sin. You will won’t to be away from the Father’s embrace, ever again.

Road Trip from Togo to Ghana via the Aflao Border

If you’ve been thinking about visiting the renowned country of Ghana or planning a West African tour on a budget, here’s a cost-effective way to explore two countries without the expense of a flight. Landing in Togo, as I did, it took me just a week to discover this small French-speaking nation, visiting its key attractions.

    Check my Youtube Video.

From Lomé, the capital of Togo, it’s a mere 10-minute journey to Ghana—a fact that initially seemed implausible to me but turned out to be true. Whether you’re intrigued by Ghana’s cultural richness or looking to expand your West African adventure, this Aflao border crossing offers a convenient and affordable way to experience a short road trip from Togo to Ghana seamlessly.

To travel to Ghana by land, start by taking a taxi, tricycle, or bike to the Aflao border. You can flag any of these on the road but I chose to try the transport app- GOZEM. From my experience, it was a quick 10-minute ride from the bustling Palm Beach main street in Lomé, Togo for only 700frs.

A lady on a motorbike about to take a road trip from Togo to Ghana.
A lady on a motorbike about to take a road trip from Togo to Ghana.

Upon arrival at the border, I was intrigued to see both men and women porters offering to carry luggage on their heads. They guided travelers through the immigration process from the Togolese side to the Ghanaian side. I opted to support a female porter with a payment of 2500 francs CFA. This was a token of appreciation for her patience, though you may negotiate a lower fee.

Everyone, whether an ECOWAS citizen with ID cards or foreigners with passports, is required to proceed on foot through this section.

Ghanian immigration officers at the Aflao border to have to meet on a road trip from Togo to Ghana

How are the immigration officers at the Aflao border when you take a road trip from Togo to Ghana?

The Togolese immigration officers were friendly, engaging in light-hearted banter and bidding me farewell without conducting a bag search.

However, my experience with the Ghanaian immigration was less pleasant. I had overlooked pre-booking accommodation on Airbnb because there weren’t any listings either. Equally, I assumed, I could sort it upon arrival. I hastily made a reservation to complete my visa on arrival application. Shortly after, a visa officer insisted I pay $150 for the visa fee and an additional $50 for a service charge.

When I requested to pay in West African Francs instead of Ghanaian Cedi, the accountant demanded more money. Rushing to make it to work that evening, I didn’t verify the exchange rate and ended up overpaying by $70 due to the confusion. There’s no doubt, it was intentional for them to steal that money.

Despite assurances from an immigration officer to investigate the matter, I never received a follow-up.

Through conversations with local friends, I learned of the challenges faced by African travelers dealing with Ghanaian immigration. There are numerous stories including reports of bribery and discrimination. This was a disappointing revelation, highlighting the need for better transparency and fairness in border procedures. By far, this was my worst border crossing.

When I saw them jogging across the main road the next day, I was filled with so much disdain.

Lesson I learned on this road trip from Togo to Ghana

It’s advisable to apply for a visa beforehand. When planning to cross land borders, as this can often be more cost-effective and straightforward. By obtaining a visa in advance, travelers can avoid potential situations where immigration officers may pressure them into paying extra fees. Despite claims that airport immigration procedures differ, my experience suggests otherwise.

Unfortunately, corruption remains a significant issue in many parts of Africa. During my travels, I observed that individuals of Caucasian descent often received their visas promptly and without any complications. However, as an African traveler, I encountered indirect requests for bribes, highlighting systemic inequalities in the visa issuance process. Addressing these challenges is crucial for promoting fairness and transparency across all border crossings.

Where to rest in Aflao town

Aflao is a quaint border town shared between Ghana and Togo. There, both French and English are commonly spoken. Also, transactions can be conducted in either Cedi or Francs XOF. In need of a respite from the bustling pace and demands of my work schedule, I opted for a three-day retreat at the Shadda Hotel. This roadside establishment offers straightforward accommodations with amenities like air conditioning and fans. Opting for the affordable 100GHC room, I found everything I needed for a short stay.

The room was equipped with essentials typical of a hotel stay, including a robust mattress and a functional wardrobe. I particularly appreciated the consistent availability of water and electricity.. This allowed me to unwind and even draft this article from the spacious balcony on the third floor. From there, I enjoyed distant views of the sea. My favorite thing to do in the evenings was to savor the cool breeze that provided a refreshing respite from the city’s heat.

What can you eat in Aflao?

During my time in Aflao, dining options were limited, with only one notable restaurant and several small street-side vendors. One evening, I decided to try a rice and stew dish with fried chicken from the restaurant, priced at 25GHC. But I quickly regretted my choice. The stew had a bitter taste that didn’t sit well. In addition, the chicken was overly dry, making it difficult to chew. I ended up leaving most of it on the plate, grateful that at least the rice helped satisfy my hunger.

Before this disappointing meal, I had enjoyed delicious roasted plantain and soya bean brochettes from roadside vendors. Those were the highlight of my culinary experiences in the area. On another occasion, while traveling through Aflao, I came across a vendor selling boiled eggs sprinkled generously with salt. Apparently, this was done while they were still hot. Intrigued, I purchased one for 3cedis and found it surprisingly tasty. Whether it was due to the salt adhering to the egg or another factor, it was a unique treat that left an impression on me.

    Tamifor’s Pebbles Game

In Tamifor’s country, it rained for six months every year. Although she loved to go out to the field and play with her friends, the rainy season kept her indoors. So, Tamifor invented a special pebbles game to play with her friends on those rainy days.

One rainy afternoon, she invited her friends, Ngola and Chombe, to her house. They all sat on the veranda, listening eagerly as Tamifor explained the rules of her game.

“Here’s how you play,” she began. “You sit on the floor, spread your legs, and place seven pebbles in a line between your legs. You choose one pebble, throw it in the air, and while it’s in the air, you have to pick up one of the other six pebbles from the ground. If the pebble you threw falls to the ground or if you catch it without picking up another pebble, you lose. Then, it’s the next player’s turn.”

Tamifor continued, her eyes sparkling with excitement. “The game gets harder as you go. For the final challenge, you have to throw the seventh pebble in the air twice and catch it after picking up all six pebbles at once! I’ve already done it!”

Ngola and Chombe were eager to try. They had a bit of trouble at first, but they didn’t give up. After six rounds of mistakes, they started to concentrate and soon were catching as many pebbles as they could. Laughter and joy filled the air as they played.

After 30 minutes, Tamifor’s mother heard the children laughing loudly and having fun. After an hour and a half, their excitement and noise were so great that she couldn’t stay inside any longer. Curious, she came out to see what was happening.

With joy, all three children tried to explain the game to her. Tamifor’s mother listened with a proud smile, then gave each of them a high five and some snacks, suggesting they take a short break.

As they rested, Tamifor’s mother asked, “Tami, why did you create this game?”

Tamifor’s face lit up with happiness. “I thought it would help us learn to count,” she replied.

Her mother beamed with pride. After their break, the children eagerly ran back to continue their game, having a wonderful day despite the heavy rain outside.

Find Rest in the Father’s Love

Did you know God’s original plan for our lives is for us to rest like he rested? Our father’s love is beyond human comprehension. He has set the example.

Here’s a deep summary of how you can rest according Pastor Joseph Prince.

“Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,” says the LORD, who has compassion on you.

    Isaiah 54:10 NIV

I want to give you a simple but critical truth. Memorize this truth. Feed on it. Let it take root in your spirit and become an anchor in your life. You will never be the same again.

Are you ready? Here it goes:

As a child of God, no matter what happens in your life, your Father in heaven loves you dearly and nothing you do can ever change that.

Will you believe that today? Whether you are going through good times or facing challenging times, you need to know that your Abba loves you.

There is nothing that you can ever do to make Him love you more, and nothing that you can ever do to make Him love you less. Even—or perhaps especially—when you feel like you have failed, know that you will always be the apple of His eye. Always.

God loves you with an everlasting love (Jer. 31:3). A love that is the same yesterday, today, forever.

Feel your Daddy God enfolding you in His embrace right now. You are safe. You are utterly loved and completely accepted.

He loved you before you ever knew Him. His love for you has nothing to do with anything that you have done for Him. Nothing you do will ever affect His unwavering, unconditional love for you.

Did you know our father’s love is unconditionally.

There is nothing for you to prove. You only need to rest and receive your Abba’s love. Let your life become established and grounded in a love that is so perfect that no challenge or adversity will be able to knock you down.

If you think that you’ve messed up, turn to your Father. In His loving arms you will find hope, security, and refuge from any storm.

I love how the apostle Paul puts it: “Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? . . . Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord” (Rom. 8:35, 37–39).

Beloved, there are no caveats or disclaimers when it comes to the love of your heavenly Father. The Bible plainly states that nothing shall be able to separate you from the love of your Father in heaven. It’s an absolute declaration and promise.

“Nothing” means nothing. As a believer, this means that even your mistakes, failings, and sins cannot separate you from the love of your Father. Hallelujah!

If you didn’t know, now you know. Our Father’s love for us has been there since the foundation of the world.

Seme Beach Hotel: Discover Cameroon’s Finest Resort

As summer approaches, many travelers eagerly anticipate their vacations, often seeking the serene ambiance of beaches. Personally, I find solace near any water body—be it a lake, river, or ocean—the freshness of the air and the soothing sound of waves offering unparalleled relaxation. Thus, my recent visit to Seme Beach Hotel – a resort in Limbe, Cameroon, promised a perfect escape.

Situated a short trip away from Buea, the journey to Seme Beach hotel was as much about the destination as the experience. Found along the picturesque coastline of Limbe, this resort beckons with its promise of tranquility and natural beauty.

When you board a car or drive down the well-tarred express road from Botaland to Seme Beach, you’ll be thrilled by the beauty of the natural vegetation. The greenery is stunning, and I always enjoy the freshness of the air in this area.

My arrival and first impressions of Seme beach hotel

Upon arriving at the expansive entrance to Seme Beach hotel, I was greeted by the staff who courteously requested a fee of 2500 frs for admission. While I initially hesitated at what I perceived as a steep price, the eagerness to unwind overshadowed my reservations, and I paid, receiving a receipt in return. To my pleasant surprise, the receipt entitled me to a complimentary small bottle of soda, which I promptly redeemed for a refreshing orange drink.

    Exploring the Resort

As I ventured deeper into the resort, the lush greenery and well-maintained pathways guided me towards the sandy shores of Seme Beach. The beach itself was a breathtaking sight—stretching along the coast with gentle waves lapping against the shore.

A few lounge cemented chairs dotted the beachfront, inviting visitors to relax and soak in the tranquil atmosphere.

Additionally, there are semi-cabins featuring wooden benches, ideal for family gatherings, work retreats, or social picnics.

Activities and amenities at Seme beach hotel

For those inclined towards aquatic adventures, Seme Beach hotel offers various water sports and activities.

Swimming in the clear, cool waters was a rejuvenating experience.

I spent nearly two hours basking in the warm water, swimming and cooling off from the heat. This remains one of the best beaches I have ever visited. The water was exceptionally clean, free from debris. The coastline gently sloped into deeper waters, perfect for swimming. I enjoyed the sensation of the soft black sand beneath my toes as I strolled along the shore. It’s a beach I look forward to visiting again as soon as possible.

There’s a beach volleyball court on one of the grassy fields and another inside a pool-like area. Equally, I saw many guys playing soccer on the sand. There could be many other opportunities for lively recreational activities but I didn’t ask.

Seme beach hotel also boasts facilities for picnics and barbecues, perfect for families and groups seeking a day of fun and relaxation.

Dining and lodging at Seme beach hotel

After a day of sun and sea, I recommend you go to the hotel’s dining area, where a menu of local delicacies will await you. I didn’t eat there because I was in a hurry to go back to Buea city, 50 minutes far awy. My suggestion is for you to order freshly grilled fish, a specialty of the region. Pair it with steamed plantains and a side of spicy vegetable sauce. The culinary delights will complemented by views of the sunset over the Atlantic Ocean, creating a memorable dining experience.

I regret not staying at the hotel. This recommendation would have been perfect if I had photos of the rooms. However, given the resort’s high reputation, I believe the accommodations are likely to be comfortable and well-maintained. It might be pricey, but that would depend on your budget.

What Are You Hearing About Jesus?

Everyday when we watch the news, we are hearing about wars and viral diseases. Do we spend time to hear what Jesus has done for us and who he is? In this detail devotional, Pastor Joseph Prince discusses how to hear from Jesus.

She had heard about Jesus, so she came up behind him through the crowd and touched his robe. For she thought to herself, “If I can just touch his robe, I will be healed.” Immediately the bleeding stopped, and she could feel in her body that she had been healed of her terrible condition.

    Mark 5:27–29 NLT

Perhaps like the woman with the issue of blood in the Gospels (Mark 5:25–34), you are facing an impossibly hopeless situation in your life. It could be a debilitating sickness, a marital situation, a financial crisis, or a prolonged challenge.

In the natural, the future looks dismal and there appears to be no reason to hope. If that is you, I encourage you to believe that you too can experience the kind of breakthrough this woman experienced.

Imagine: for twelve long years, she had watched helplessly as her condition went from bad to worse no matter what she tried. Most of us would have given up. How did she find hope in the midst of her hopelessness? What gave her the courage to hope again?

I believe that the secret to her faith can be found in these five words: “She had heard about Jesus.”

What you are hearing about Jesus will define your faith

What do you think she heard about Jesus? This is an important question. Because whatever she had heard imparted an audacious sense of Bible hope and confidence in her. And this imbued her with a boldness and tenacity to risk everything just to touch the hem of His garment.

She knew well the religious laws concerning unclean persons such as herself. That meant she could be subjected to public humiliation and, very possibly, violence if she was recognized. Clearly she must have had no doubt in her heart that she would be completely healed the moment she touched the hem of His garment. Or she would not have risked it.

The Bible does not tell us exactly what she heard about Jesus. But I submit to you that she must have heard story after story of how Jesus healed the sick everywhere He went. Also, how good and gracious He was even to the unclean lepers or the down-and-out who came to Him.

How are you acting on what you heard about Jesus?

What she heard about Jesus produced in her a positive, and confident expectation of good. That we can see in what she declared: “If only I may touch His clothes, I shall be made well.” This hope then resulted in a faith that was effortless.

Faith as defined in God’s Word is “the confidence that what we hope for will actually happen” (Heb. 11:1 NLT). In other words, the hope that she had in the goodness of Jesus became faith. And this faith gave her the boldness to press through the crowd and receive her healing from Jesus.

What are you hearing about Jesus? The more you hear about His goodness and grace, the more faith will unconsciously arise. This will enable you to receive your miracle.

We have the responsibility to act upon what we have been hearing aboyt Jesus.

    The Whole Armor of God

Our armor is in God. Did you know that?

Google defines armor as a verb to mean provide (someone) with emotional, social, or other defences.

This is what God does to us and wants to do for us. In this devotional, Pastor Joseph Prince expands in detail what is the armor of God.

Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God; praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end with all perseverance and supplication for all the saints.

    Ephesians 6:16–18

The Bible says in Ephesians 6:10–15 that God has provided us with the spiritual armor of truth, righteousness, and the gospel of peace. Today, let’s look at the rest of the armor of God found in Ephesians 6.

    What is God’s armor?

Each piece of God’s armor is actually a weapon of right believing by which we experience His victory over the devil’s mind games. Let’s look first at the piece of armor the Bible calls the shield of faith with which to defend yourself and stand strong when the enemy comes against you with thoughts of fear, doubt, and confusion.

In apostle Paul’s time, a shield referred to the huge shield that was used by the Romans, which was as big as a door! See your faith as a mighty shield and picture this—as long as your shield of faith is up, you are untouchable.

No matter how many fiery darts the devil may pitch at you, ALL of them shall be quenched. Too many Christians are taking up the shield of doubt and quenching the blessings of God instead. Don’t let that be you—face your future with boldness with the mighty shield of faith.

Another area the devil likes to attack in your mind is the area of your salvation. When you come under attack, apart from the shield of faith, be sure to have on the helmet of salvation.

God’s armor is for us all

The word “salvation” comes from a beautiful Greek word soteria. It definitely includes eternal life. But it is an all-encompassing word. Which means deliverance (from your enemies, diseases, depression, fears, and all evils), preservation, safety, and salvation. So put on the helmet of salvation by meditating on Jesus. And be filled with God’s wholeness, protection, healing, and soundness. Let His soteria insulate your mind against the enemy’s lies.

Lastly, you have also been equipped with the sword of the Spirit, which is the Word of God. Wield the sword of the Spirit by praying in the Spirit and speaking out God’s “now word” into your situation. Declare His promises and the truth of His grace over yourself and your circumstances. This will guard your heart against thoughts of hopelessness, despair and fear.

My friend, the whole armor of God has everything to do with what you believe in Christ. When you believe rightly about His grace and His finished work, every evil strategy the enemy has against you will surely fail.

So be strong in the Lord’s love for you. Believe that God is for you and not against you. His truth, His righteousness, His faith, His armor,His gospel, His salvation, His Word, and His Spirit are all weapons of right believing, They are for us to overcome all the devil’s attacks.

    Are you near God?

You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, and you shall be near to me, you and your children, your children’s children, your flocks and your herds, and all that you have. There I will provide for you, lest you and your household, and all that you have, come to poverty; for there are still five years of famine.

    Genesis 45:10–11

In the Old Testament story of Joseph, after Joseph revealed himself to his brothers, he tells them to return to their father and to tell him, “Come down to me, do not tarry. You shall dwell in the land of Goshen, you shall be near to me, you and your children, your children’s children, your flocks and your herds, and all that you have” (Gen. 45:9–10).

The name “Goshen” means “drawing near.” God wants you to be in “Goshen”. It is a place of nearness to Him, and there is no place nearer to Him than being in the Beloved (Eph. 1:6).

God’s heart of love is not satisfied with just removing your sins from you. No, He wants more. He wants you in His presence. He wants you in the place where He can lavish the bountiful love in His heart on you!

Why should we draw near God?

When you draw near to Jesus, you enjoy divine protection. In recent years, new strains of deadly viruses have been making headlines. But whatever the virus may be, you can declare, “A thousand may fall at my side, and ten thousand at my right hand; but it shall not come near me, God’s beloved!” (Ps. 91:7).

When there were plagues and pestilences all over Egypt because Pharaoh refused to let God’s people go, look at what God said about the children of Israel: “I will set apart the land of Goshen, in which My people dwell, that no swarms of flies shall be there, in order that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the land. I will make a difference between My people and your people” (Exod. 8:22–23).

There is a difference between God’s beloved people and the people of the world. Although Egypt was plagued by swarms of flies and other pestilences, the children of Israel were safe in the land of Goshen. They were completely untouched by the troubles!

So even if there are bad things happening in the world today, remember that as God’s beloved child, you are in the world, but not of the world (John 17:11, 16). No plague, no evil, and no danger can come close to you and your dwelling place because you are safe in the secret place of the Most High.

As the children of Israel were kept safe and protected in Goshen, so will you and I. This is because God calls us His beloved!

A Journey Through the Singapore National Museum

Situated in the heart of the city-country, Singapore National Museum stands as a beacon of the country’s rich history. It is a representation of the vibrant culture.

As the oldest museum in Singapore, established in 1887, it has evolved from a modest repository of artifacts to a dynamic institution that captivates visitors with its innovative exhibitions. For me, it was a place hosting a comprehensive storytelling of the past, present and future of the country.

This was the first museum I encountered with a glassy, almost transparent signpost from the outside. I was wowed even before entering. I barely had time to stow my phone back in my wallet because everything was so captivating.

Yet, I refrained from taking a million photos; after all, I wanted you to have something to discover for yourself. Here are just a few highlights to whet your appetite. I left feeling satisfied, but I can only imagine how much more I would have experienced if I had seen all the sections. I highly recommend budgeting to visit the entire museum—it’s truly worth it.

The Singapore national museum is a historical landmark

The National Museum of Singapore is housed in a stunning neoclassical building that seamlessly blends old-world charm with contemporary design.

The original structure, with its grand rotunda and stately columns, was augmented by a modern extension in 2006. This renovation created a harmonious fusion of the past and present. This architectural marvel is a testament to Singapore’s ability to preserve its heritage while embracing the future.

I was amazed at the sight of this massive building as I alighted from the taxi.

This remains the largest museum I have visited in my global museum-hunting travels.

Engaging exhibitions at the Singapore national museum

Upon entering the museum, visitors are greeted with a diverse array of exhibitions that span multiple galleries.

From the reception, I was informed that there are three sections within the gigantic structure. Guests can pay for access to all sections or choose fewer, based on their budget. Having budgeted only $15 SGD, I opted to explore just one section, hoping to return another day. Although I never made it back, I’m sure the pricier sections offered more entertainment than the one I visited. Still, it took me an hour to tour the part I paid for.

The Singapore History Gallery is a highlight, offering an immersive journey through the nation’s past. From its early days as a bustling trading port to its emergence as a global metropolis, the gallery uses multimedia displays. I also houses artifacts, and interactive installations to bring history to life.

One standout exhibit is the “Singapura: 700 Years” exhibition, which traces the island’s transformation over seven centuries. Visitors can explore ancient relics, colonial-era documents, and personal stories that illustrate the resilience and ingenuity of the Singaporean people.

Every corner of the museum was filled with authentic artifacts and re-enacted videos of ancient life. I was shocked to see a real, large wooden boat inside the museum.

    Celebrating Culture

The Singapore National Museum is not just about history; it also celebrates the rich cultural tapestry of Singapore. The Goh Seng Choo Gallery, for instance, showcases the “Desire and Danger” exhibition, featuring an exquisite collection of natural history drawings and specimens from the William Farquhar Collection. This exhibition delves into the flora and fauna of Southeast Asia, highlighting the region’s biodiversity and its impact on local culture.

Additionally, the museum hosts temporary exhibitions that cover a wide range of topics, from contemporary art and design to significant historical events. These rotating exhibitions ensure that there is always something new to discover, making each visit unique.

From the time Europeans arrived to the present day, the changes in Singapore are evident at the Singapore National Museum. One section was dimly lit while another was brightly illuminated, which I was tempted to interpret as representing different eras. Most walls displayed pictures of historical events, and TV screens were everywhere, highlighting past occurrences in English. I noticed there were no guides, so visitors, like myself, walked around independently, reading and taking pictures.

    Educational and Interactive Experiences

The National Museum is committed to making history accessible and engaging for all ages. The “Story of the Forest” installation, created by the Japanese digital art collective teamLab, transforms the museum’s glass rotunda into an enchanting digital rainforest. Visitors can interact with the projection, bringing the flora and fauna to life and creating a captivating, educational experience for children and adults alike.

The museum also offers a variety of educational programs, workshops, and guided tours that provide deeper insights into the exhibits. These programs are designed to cater to different interests and age groups, ensuring that everyone can find something that piques their curiosity.

Another thing that captivated me was the detailed portrayal of Singapore’s efforts to stop wars. Almost every country has a war history, and the museum showcased this vividly. Some parts had real armored cars on display to demonstrate the military’s prowess, while others exhibited the uniforms and items used by soldiers. Everything in this museum is real, adding to its authenticity and immersive experience.

A Hub of Community and Innovation

Beyond its exhibitions, the Singapore National Museum serves as a cultural hub, hosting film screenings, performances, and festivals that celebrate the arts and foster a sense of community.

For example, the annual “Night Festival,” for example, transforms the museum and its surroundings into a vibrant nocturnal playground, featuring light installations, live performances, and art installations that draw crowds from all over the city.

From ancient pottery to woven baskets, old phones, and carts, every part of the museum told a story, even without words written.

    Conclusion

Before you exit the beautiful museum, remember to stop by their shop. It offers a wide range of books and memorable items to take home with you.

A visit to the National Museum of Singapore is more than just a walk through history; it is an immersive experience that celebrates the nation’s heritage, culture, and spirit of innovation. Whether you are a history buff, a culture enthusiast, or simply looking for an engaging and educational outing, the Singapore National Museum offers something for everyone.

It stands as a testament to Singapore’s rich past and its dynamic present, making it a must-visit destination for locals and tourists alike.
