Law School: 3 Reasons to choose a Christian university

A distinctive feature of a Christian law school is its commitment to upholding Christian values. While many individuals attend law schools with the aim of attaining power, wealth, and a prestigious reputation, the ethos of a Christian law school sets it apart.

This article summarizes why I went to Handong International Law School (HILS) and the lessons I learned after graduation.

In spite of the significant adjustments and cultural hurdles associated with international migration, my academic journey in a foreign land was truly enriching.

Discovering the steps I undertook and the strategies I employed to attain my objectives is a fascinating tale.

While every educational institution articulates its mission, vision, and purpose, the true measure of its success lies in its execution.

Institutions consistently strive for enhancement, but certain universities stand out for their accomplished track records.

Why is Handong International law scool unique?

Among these distinguished establishments is HILS, a Christian law school that has garnered an exceptional reputation throughout South Korea. It stands as a beacon of excellence, renowned for producing a cadre of polished legal professionals, several of whom hold recognition and licensure from various state BAR associations in the United States.

The academic curriculum doesn’t merely revolve around shaping lawyers; it is meticulously designed to cultivate future legal luminaries who embody qualities of integrity and virtue, serving as representatives of divine principles on Earth.

HILS stood out as my top preference when I embarked on my university search, and I was overjoyed to secure admission.

Despite the fact that my acceptance arrived after my second application attempt, I have no reservations about dedicating two years to nurturing my spiritual growth within my academic and personal pursuits.

During the orientation day, as we reveled in the excitement of receiving HILS souvenirs and the anticipation of embarking on a fresh academic endeavor, we were gently reminded of the significance of integrating godly values into our legal careers.

The Dean of the Law Faculty and other esteemed professors from the Law School conveyed their insights through brief speeches, offering us a glimpse of what to anticipate and how to prepare.

Reflecting on this experience now, I see it as a journey that commenced with elation and culminated in a sense of profound fulfillment.

Reasons why I went to a Christian law school

My aspiration to attend law school took root at the age of 12. As time passed, my certainty grew that I wouldn’t ultimately become a practising lawyer following my Bachelor’s degree.

However, my fervor for forging a path in the field of law remained unwavering. It extended beyond a mere occupation – it was a profound vocation.

An innate determination to denounce injustice fueled me, and I recognized that the most effective avenue for advocacy lay in the practice of law.

Having completed two master’s degrees in International Law – one from a government institution (University of Yaounde II) and another from a Christian university (The Protestant University for Central Africa) – my quest for a law school abroad was driven by a desire to further nurture my faith.

I held the firm belief that my chosen academic path should coincide with an environment conducive to the growth of my spirituality. It was crucial for me to find a setting where I could openly discuss and engage with matters related to Christ.

Outlined below are the expectations that guided my search.

    1. To join my faith with my studies

Upon immersing myself in the pages of the Bible and delving into the stories of faith-driven figures such as Daniel (Daniel 1-9) and Apostle Paul (Acts 22:3), a profound realization dawned on me: it was indeed feasible to ardently serve God while pursuing a fulfilling career.

The conviction grew stronger that my life could be a harmonious fusion, with every talent and gift harnessed to magnify the glory of God.

Consequently, my primary aspiration was to connect with individuals who shared this perspective – those whose career aspirations transcended mere financial gain to embrace the noble pursuit of preserving and enriching lives.

Simultaneously, my yearning extended to finding a sanctuary where my musical worship could flourish even within the realm of academia. Having devoted years to expressing my love for God through participation in church praise teams, I was elated to discover that the law school boasted its very own praise team.

Without a doubt, I eagerly joined this musical assembly, and with each gospel song I sang, a profound sense of fulfillment enveloped me.

    2. To improve my skills using a Christian law school perspective

Legal education is widely acknowledged as intricate across various countries. Lawyers are commonly regarded as sharp-minded individuals who excel in quick thinking and analysis.

While my Bachelor’s degree could have paved the way for membership in the Cameroon BAR association, I had made a resolute decision not to pursue a career as a litigator. I was acutely aware that certain types of cases would compel me to compromise my integrity.

I had long discerned my true calling – to be a legal advocate through the written word, particularly concerning refugee rights. This definitive choice significantly influenced my selection of courses, aligning them with this distinct path.

My anticipation was centered on honing my practical research skills to transform into a more proficient writer, enriched by a Christian perspective.

    3. To build a strong community

In a lighthearted manner, I often jest with my friends and family, claiming that if I were meant to fulfill my purpose alone, God would have crafted only me.

While this statement generally brings smiles to their faces, it serves as a personal reminder that I’m intended to exist within a community.

There’s no doubt in my mind that attending this law school provided a natural and accessible platform to connect with fellow Christian legal professionals and establish new friendships. I eagerly looked forward to immersing myself in diverse cultures and openly sharing my own.

As I contemplate the day of my graduation, I can confidently affirm that opting for a Christian law school has proven to be the most rewarding decision I’ve ever made.

What I learned after Law school

The question in your mind now is, did I accomplish those goals? I can boldly say I didn’t in all aspects, but I learned more things than I had anticipated.

    1. You can practice your faith anywhere

The initial reason that brought me immense satisfaction was the unfettered ability to openly practice my Christian faith. I felt an exhilarating sense of freedom, completely at ease discussing God with anyone, irrespective of the timing.

The privilege of engaging in “family group” discussions with our professors frequently arose, providing a platform to express our viewpoints on Scripture.

Every Friday marked a cherished tradition within the law school department – a collective session known as Christianity and Law (CnL). During these enlightening lectures, the Faculty Dean expounded upon numerous biblical truths intertwined with the legal realm.

Following this instructive class, students convened in smaller groups led by specific professors.

    What is the family group?

Initially, all students, spanning Juris Doctor Levels 1, 2, and 3, as well as Master’s students like myself, are divided into groups numbering in the dozens or more. This arrangement persists for a year. These private group gatherings take place in designated spots within the faculty, fostering an environment where students can openly exchange their insights on the Dean’s lectures with their respective professors.

This setup also served as a wonderful avenue for students to engage with their professors on a personal level.

The professor often posed general questions and exhibited genuine concern for the welfare of each student.

These familial discussions endured for an hour, creating an atmosphere of enjoyment and camaraderie where we could converse about matters of faith without apprehension. I found immense delight in every Friday due to these interactions.

On occasion, as a united group, we ventured out for lunch with the professor, city-nature tours, with their spouses, and their children, sometimes in their absences.

There always appeared to be an accessible moment to offer Biblical encouragement to someone.

While I often chose to dine alone due to financial reasons, it was not uncommon to observe groups of friends or classmates sharing meals at the university cafeteria.

My first year with Deal Lee’s group was awesome, while Prof. Murdock’s group in the second year was full of lots of activities.

I really miss those kind professors. We celebrated both the Professor and students’birthdays and special events as a team with a cake, snacks and drinks.

    Law school clubs

There were various clubs within the faculty that students could join, providing equal opportunities for engagement.

For instance, I was a member of the “Hilsian” journalism group, where we were tasked with covering faculty events through written articles. These pieces were collected and published in the Hilsian newspaper, fostering a sense of belonging among fellow writers and enabling the exchange of creative writing concepts.

Likewise, I participated in the Law and Development Club, which involved journeys to Southeast Asian nations to interact with Korean missionaries and contribute to development initiatives.

During these trips, we also had the chance to visit legal institutions, participate in law conferences held by universities and national institutes, and engage in conversations with local lawyers. Professors actively supported students in each club, creating an additional avenue for building relationships and connecting with them on an approachable level.

Overall, a significant number of professors at HILS were easily accessible and consistently encouraging. They readily extended prayers and assistance to students whenever the need arose. Their welcoming demeanor was reflected in their open-door policy, inviting students to seek guidance and counseling.

I highly appreciate the generosity displayed by many of these professors, even beyond the confines of our time at the institution.

    HILS Praise Team

Participating in the praise team stands out as one of my most gratifying experiences.

I found immense joy in lending my voice to the Friday CnL lectures or Tuesday devotions.

A distinctive feature of HILS was the pre-midday devotion sessions every Tuesday, where not only the Dean but also other law professors shared the gospel. Each of these gatherings commenced with brief prayers and uplifting praise moments.

Given the abundance of skilled musicians and instrumentalists within the praise team, we operated on a rotational basis over the course of weeks. Our repertoire encompassed a blend of hymns and predominantly popular contemporary gospel songs.

Personally, I held a special fondness for the songs by Chris Tomlin and Hillsong United that we performed. A wide grin naturally adorned my face when we concluded classes by singing the HILS anthem together.

    2. Don’t expect the university alone to find career opportunities

Regarding the second aspect, my academic journey provided me with a solid theoretical foundation in law. HILS was meticulous in guiding me towards selecting courses aligned with my interest in refugee rights and international law.

Throughout this academic pursuit, I was fortunate to collaborate closely with experienced professors, whose mentorship extended to supervising my thesis.

Furthermore, the law school orchestrated workshops on significant global occasions such as “Refugee Day.”

These events served as platforms to engage with refugees in Korea, allowing them to candidly share their personal narratives. As someone deeply interested in this field, the opportunity to directly interact with these individuals and listen to their stories in person was truly invaluable.

However, I encountered limitations in translating my theoretical knowledge into practical experience. As one of only two Master’s students, the law school faced challenges in arranging extended internships that would facilitate hands-on practice.

My initial aspiration was to intern at a refugee-focused organization while concurrently working on my thesis, but the logistics of achieving this balance for a duration of six months proved unfeasible.

    Why was I disappointed?

    1. Organizations were unwilling to hire a foreign intern

This stands out as the most challenging phase of my law school journey.

Given my non-aspiration to pursue a career as a practicing lawyer, the quest to secure a suitable internship organization proved to be an arduous task. Despite protracted searches, the career office eventually facilitated a connection with a Korean refugee rights organization situated in Seoul.

Regrettably, the opportunity granted was limited to a mere two weeks, involving tasks of minimal scope.

The landscape of refugee rights promotion and safeguarding posed intricate challenges within the context of Korea, primarily stemming from the influx of refugees in 2018. The diversity of perspectives among Koreans regarding the appropriate response added an additional layer of complexity.

Consequently, identifying an organization that was amenable to accepting interns was far from straightforward.

During this abbreviated work stint, I was exposed to the persisting refugee-related issues and gained insights into the combined efforts of both governmental bodies and select private organizations to address the unpredictable nature of the crisis.

    2. My lack of Korean language skills

An additional unfortunate reality, for which I don’t entirely fault the school, was my limited proficiency in the Korean language.

Naturally, every intern was required to possess a high degree of competence in speaking, writing, and comprehending Korean. My proficiency level fell short of this requirement. Although I had attained TOPIK Level 3 certification, I found myself unable to effectively contribute.

This language barrier constituted my most significant constraint, and it stands as my most noteworthy piece of advice. I would strongly advise against enrolling in a law school or any educational institution in Korea unless there’s a firm or company connection in place for practical experience.

Simultaneously, prioritizing the acquisition and practice of the Korean language is crucial if the intention is to work in the country.

Theoretical studies devoid of practical application indeed carry limited value.

    What did I do?

Conversely, I strongly recommend taking a proactive approach.

Upon recognizing the challenges I faced in securing a practice opportunity, despite submitting numerous applications to both domestic and international human rights organizations, I decided to broaden my horizons.

I initiated a search abroad and successfully secured a volunteer role at an international refugee rights organization called Sameskies, situated in Malaysia.

This led me to travel to Malaysia and engage in work on-site for a few weeks, followed by an extended period of remote work spanning over a year.

    3. Some people consider friendships only during law school

In my concluding reflection, I encountered numerous students who engaged in fellowship primarily as per the school’s requirements.

For many, the willingness to sustain these connections after graduation seemed limited. I attribute this phenomenon to cultural disparities, where some individuals, particularly Koreans, tend to gravitate towards spending time within their own circle and conversing in their native language.

Navigating conversations with them posed challenges at times, despite the faculty’s directive to adhere to an English-only principle.

The substantial language barrier hindered meaningful interactions, and it became evident that some were less receptive to forging connections with foreigners.

Conversely, one facet that stood out to me was the faculty’s deliberate efforts to foster unity among students and professors. These initiatives resonated with intentionality and held a unique significance. The establishment of family groups, aligning students with their professors, was a notable example.

Furthermore, the faculty orchestrated a series of special events, providing occasions for both students and professors to celebrate collectively.

What is the Teachers’ Day event?

As an illustration, one distinctive event that epitomized the law school unity was the “Teachers Day” celebration.

During this occasion, each family group was tasked with crafting presentations, ranging from songs to dances, as tokens of appreciation for their family professors.

These evenings were infused with joy and mirth, creating an atmosphere of camaraderie.

The professors, often taken aback by the delightful surprises their respective groups had orchestrated, couldn’t help but revel in the heartwarming gestures.

Beyond the surface, these gatherings served as bridges of connection and opportunities for mutual appreciation, acknowledging the unwavering dedication of the professors.

Sarah and school friends in 2017 and 2018 teacher’s day event.

In 2017, we devised a creative surprise for our professor – a song. We customized it by altering the lyrics to incorporate his name. While maintaining the original melody, we artfully depicted our group activities through the modified lyrics.

The heartfelt effort left a lasting impression on me, and I was equally delighted when fellow group members shared their involvement in the endeavor.

When the moment arrived to unveil our heartfelt composition, our professor’s face lit up with a joyful smile.

As tradition dictated, the law school’s expansive commencement theater resonated with resounding applause, echoing the enthusiasm and appreciation of all family groups present.

    HILS banquet

Of all the experiences, the annual banquets held a special place in my heart. These gatherings marked the culmination of each year with a grand joint faculty dinner, hosted at exquisite venues.

The atmosphere was elegantly festive, as attendees donned formal attire and converged to dine and share in fellowship.

Set against the backdrop of impending graduation, these banquets assumed the dual role of a farewell occasion and a day of gratitude.

It was a beautiful fusion of bidding adieu to one chapter while expressing gratitude for the journey that had led us to that moment.

In those cherished moments, we united in prayer and captured lasting memories through photographs with both our dear friends and esteemed professors.

Simultaneously, it served as a time of collective prayers, binding our hearts and aspirations in a shared spiritual communion.

Amidst the fellowship, the banquet offered a sumptuous feast, providing an opportunity to indulge in delectable cuisine while engaging in lively conversations.

    Bible Study meetings

An equally remarkable aspect that I must not overlook is the Bible study group discussions. Some of the professors’ wives generously opened their homes to us students, creating an inviting space for our gatherings.

They designated a specific day and time, allowing us to convene and engage in Bible discussions in a manner reminiscent of conversing with our own mothers.

These sessions often came complete with home-cooked meals or delectable baked treats, further enhancing the welcoming atmosphere.

Beyond the spiritual enrichment, these occasions became platforms for forging connections with fellow students on multiple levels.

Through the lens of shared biblical exploration, we bonded and shared our insights, creating moments that I wholeheartedly cherished.

At times, our gatherings took on a more relaxed tone as well, with sessions dedicated to watching Christian movies.

I fondly recall instances when we viewed films like “War Room” and inspiring movies that championed courage and faith.

Beyond this, we embraced the opportunity to commemorate significant milestones together, such as birthdays, fostering a sense of unity and friendship that extended beyond the academic realm.

    HILS Sports Day

One of my most unforgettable memories intertwined with the entire faculty was the sports day event.

On this day, both students and professors congregated at the university’s sports facilities to engage in various friendly competitions.

Sports day was a harmonious blend of skills and interests, catering to a diverse range of preferences.

Whether it was basketball, football, or running, there was an open invitation for all to participate. Personally, I relished the opportunity to play basketball, even if running wasn’t exactly my forte.

The event reflects equality and friendship. It’s a time of laughter, and the joy of learning new games. Amidst the friendly competition, the emphasis is on nurturing our mental well-being and physical health.

Furthermore, the vibrant spirit of HILS extended beyond the confines of the campus. Some Saturdays witnessed the formation of student groups that embarked on picnics, city tours, or simply moments of relaxation. There was an undeniable energy driving us towards active engagement, ensuring that there was always something enjoyable to partake in.

While I could never fully capture all the valuable lessons I gained during my time at HILS, one thing is clear: the benefits far outweighed any drawbacks.

    Law school graduation ceremony

My graduation day was a source of profound happiness. I felt a deep sense of fulfillment, knowing that I had followed God’s calling for my life. The wealth of knowledge I had acquired surpassed even my own expectations.

Walking in my graduation robe, a smile gracing my face, I carried an overwhelming gratitude to God for granting me the privilege to be a part of Handong International Law School. The memories I had made and the people I had met held a special place in my heart.

The span of two years felt incredibly brief, and I find myself yearning to embark on another educational journey.

As I sat down to dine with friends, family, the esteemed law faculty, and my fellow course mates, a profound emotion welled up within me. Almost teary-eyed, I recognized that it marked the conclusion of one significant journey while heralding the commencement of another.

Looking around the table, I couldn’t help but reflect on the experiences that had led me to this point.

Without a doubt, my time at HILS has illuminated my academic path like no other, making it the pinnacle of my entire career journey

    Thank you, HILS, for everything.

Above all, I remain grateful to God for directing my career. I am using my knowledge as an online Refugee Rights Correspondent. Thank you, HILS.

    Nini’s Fear Feelings

Meet Nini, a bright young girl who starts her mornings with cheerful greetings to her family. When she steps outside to feel the morning sun, she can’t help but smile and thank God for another day. However, she had secret fear feelings.

But this wasn’t always the case. Just two years ago, Nini was quite different. She used to be unhappy and easily upset over small things. Even mornings couldn’t bring her joy – she often felt sad and moody. If she made a mistake or didn’t do well on a test, she would carry that disappointment and guilt throughout the week.

Nini’s parents tried to make her happy by giving her gifts, but they didn’t seem to work. Despite their compliments and reminders of her value, she still felt unattractive and unsatisfied.

Even though she went on picnics with her family and friends, like to the beach or the park, she struggled to relax and enjoy the fun.

One Friday evening, Nini’s mom decided to talk with her about God’s words, delving deeper than their usual daily devotion. They discussed why Nini’s fear feelings were affecting her life so much.

Nini confessed her fear to her mom – fear of disappointing others and making mistakes in life. Her mom understood and shared words of comfort from the Bible. They read Isaiah 41:10 together: “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”

They also read 2 Timothy 1:7: “For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.” These verses helped Nini realize that she didn’t have to live in fear.

Nini, who had kept her fear feelings inside for years, finally opened up to her mom that day. She was ready to make a change in her life. They read Proverbs 3:5-6, which advised to trust in the Lord and not rely solely on one’s understanding. This brought a sense of peace to Nini as they prayed together.

From that moment on, Nini chose gratitude over worry. She decided to be thankful to God for everything and stopped being anxious about making mistakes in the future. She became a joyful girl, using the verses they had read to pray whenever she felt afraid.

Her transformation was evident, and her family was delighted to see the positive change in Nini. With newfound faith and strength, Nini faced life with a joyful heart, no longer held back by fear.

Godly Women: 3 Ways to Cultivate Christ-Centered Living

Do you consider yourself a godly woman or do you know godly women?

The 20th century perspective of a successful woman is a lady who has a white-collar job or business owner, is married, has a child or children, owns a car(s), has a house(s), and huge savings account, to list a few.

A Christ-believing, godly woman shouldn’t limit herself to these social opinions. It is not a sin to have possessions to be married, but they are not the definition of success.

Does this mean success is only what we possess? Definitely ‘NOT.’ True success is God’s peace.

Self-condemnation and alienation have become usual for women who have experienced broken relationships.

This is because they think the societal walls of success are too high for them to scale over.

There is hope for you, Sister. Christ’s definition of success supersedes public opinion. You can thrive with a successful mindset. This is if you ask the Holy Spirit to direct your heart as you study the Bible.

The highest life achievement you will make is to be able to pray and live by God’s will.

    Bible definition of success

It will surprise you that the word SUCCESS is mentioned only once in the Bible.

“Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful.” Joshua 1:8.

It is astonishing that God considers those who have had success as those who read the Bible. He also values those who decide to live their lives following Christ’s example.

Here are three ways you can live a life that would be successful in the Lord’s eyes!

    bold godly women smiling

    1. Christ’s success for godly women is speaking the word of God

People can know what your life state is based on what you say.

“A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in his heart, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in his heart. For the mouth speaks what the heart is full of” Luke 6:45.

You have the power to change your life from what you confess and affirm. Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof. Prov 18:21.

I advise you to choose your words wisely despite how hurt you feel. Speak about what you want to see in your life.

I recall standing in front of my mirror and sometimes kneeling at the edge of my bed in deep pain, though in the sobbing and tears, I always heard the still inner voice of the Holy Spirit reminding me about scriptures I had meditated on.

Whenever I declared those scriptures out loud to my hearing, I felt internal peace, and it built my self-confidence again with God and men.

It is hard! Yes, it is difficult not to curse the person who hurt you. Especially those people who condemn you for not having everything they possess. However, spiritual maturity as a godly woman is desiring to be successful according to God’s standard. It is that robust lady who will choose to bless herself daily. She does this with scriptures and sincerely blesses the person who hurt her.

    godly women smiling

    2. Christ’s success for godly women is meditating on the word of God.

True success is knowing what God said in His manual about you. The only way to digest this manual is to devote time with undivided attention to commit to understanding what God wrote in the Bible.

“All Scripture is God-breathed [given by divine inspiration] and is profitable for instruction, for conviction [of sin], for correction [of error and restoration to obedience], for training in righteousness [learning to live in conformity to God’s will, both publicly and privately—behaving honorably with personal integrity and moral courage];so that the man of God may be complete and proficient, outfitted and thoroughly equipped for every good work.” 2 Tim 3:16-17

Since I started watching at least two or more gospel messages on YouTube from people I regard as servants of God almost every day and listening to scriptural gospel music, for many years now, my life has been full of joy, peace, and rest in everything I do. I am free from the pain of the past hurt.

I encourage you to form the habit of deliberately changing your mind with scriptures daily, and to reject the general view that success is based on what you have achieved.

“And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.” Romans 12:2.

Meditating means repeating the verses in your heart while praying for the Holy Spirit to help you understand what it is.

    3. Christ’s success for godly women is observing the word of God.

Who is your example of life? Why are you doing what you are doing?

What you do is a direct reflection of what you know and believe.

There is no dispute; action speaks louder than words.

“But be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves. For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man observing his natural face in a mirror; for he observes himself, goes away, and immediately forgets what kind of man he was. But he who looks into the perfect law of liberty and continues in it and is not a forgetful hearer but a doer of the work, this one will be blessed in what he does”. James 1:22-25.

Practice the word as Ephesians 5:1 says

“Be, therefore, imitators of God, as beloved children.”

Before I do anything, I ask myself, “If Jesus were here now, would he be comfortable doing what I want to do”? I urge you to examine yourself in the Lord.

Apostle Paul emphasized in 1 Corinthians 11:1, “Imitate me as I imitate Christ.”

I urge you again to find a Pastor or mentor and consistently engage in a Bible-based fellowship.

Invest in this with prayers and devotion. The word success is mentioned only three times in Deuteronomy 2 regarding possession.

“The Horims also dwelt in Seir before time; but the children of Esau succeeded them,…unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto themDeut 2:12.

    What is success?

Success is having an intimate, personal relationship with God and not just an external accumulation of things.

It should be noted that marriage, a good job, cars, and houses are not bad. God created them as by-products for us to accomplish our purpose, but they are not in themselves what qualifies a person or a godly woman as successful.

Sister, the secret of Christ’s success is speaking, studying, and practicing the word of God.

All godly women must forgive those who hurt them and refuse to bear offenses. Also, holy women are obedient to God above everyone else. We do it because we love him, and he loves us.

Travel Abroad: 5 Key Preparation Points

Embarking on a journey abroad or exploring international travel opens the door to a wealth of experiences, blending moments of joy and challenges.

While planning such an adventure may seem daunting, it can be an enriching process when approached thoughtfully and ahead of time.

Before you make any travel commitments, take into account the following crucial aspects, from purchasing your flight ticket to visa applications.

    1. Where do you want to go to travel abroad?

When considering a journey abroad, whether for work, tourism, or study, the choice of destination plays a pivotal role in shaping your overall experience.

Italy stands out for its rich cultural heritage, renowned opera, artistic legacy, and high-end fashion brands, making it an ideal destination for tourists seeking an immersive cultural encounter.

    Road in the bush

Likewise, countries such as China, Hong Kong, Turkey, Australia, Canada, France, the USA, and Switzerland offer promising job opportunities, making them top choices for individuals seeking professional growth and career advancement.

    2. Where will you stay when you travel abroad?

In the contemporary travel landscape, a plethora of accommodation choices are available, necessitating thorough exploration and timely selection. My personal preference leans towards Airbnbs, as they afford me the freedom to cook meals at my convenience.

Hotels present a comfortable alternative for those who relish dining out. Remarkably, motor vans offer a unique experience, enabling individuals to drive and camp wherever they desire. Motels and shared accommodations are also viable choices.

hotel accomodation before you travel abroad

For longer stays, renting a flat emerges as an attractive option. Many countries provide online real estate platforms that facilitate home searches prior to relocation, streamlining the process.

    3. What and how should you pack?

When preparing for travel abroad, I find it advantageous to pack well in advance to circumvent any potential forgetfulness. Many individuals, however, opt for last-minute packing days before departure, each with their own rationale. Regardless, the process of packing can be stressful.

Certain items remain pertinent for both long and short trips. Among these essentials are money, a universal travel adapter, a portable charger with cords, necessary medications, toiletries, and clothing suited to the season.

A man packing clothes into his bag

Efficiently folding clothes minimizes space consumption within the luggage. Furthermore, it’s crucial to familiarize yourself with the weight limit set by the airline you will be flying with, ensuring a smooth journey.

    4. Which airline will you use to travel abroad?

Flight booking can indeed be a taxing endeavor for many individuals. To circumvent this potential stress, some opt to enlist the assistance of Airline Agencies to handle flight and hotel reservations, as well as organize their itinerary. While this approach is undoubtedly hassle-free, it can come at a slightly higher cost.

Personally, I dedicate time to explore various airline options and meticulously compare prices. On occasions, I opt for airlines from the destination country, as this often entails a direct flight. Layovers can be extensive and occasionally draining, particularly when confined within an airport.

    a plane in the sky

In less favorable scenarios, especially when transit visas aren’t readily granted, making the most of the layovers for quick tourism can pose a considerable challenge. It’s essential to thoroughly assess flight dates and times, as disparities in time zones could inadvertently lead to missed flights.

    5. Which transportation means will you use when you travel?

Different countries boast diverse options for public and private transportation. While this may seem like a concern to address once you’ve arrived in the country, I strongly advise verifying these details prior to your flight.

In many well-developed nations, the subway or train system often proves the most cost-effective and efficient method for navigating the city. Acquiring a train card—available for purchase at convenience stores within train stations—loading it with funds, and attentively following train announcements at each stop are typically the only requisites.

Conversely, in some countries, buses reign supreme due to their ability to access more remote neighborhoods. Boarding at designated stops allows for convenient travel to any destination within the city.

Transportation modes to consider before you travel abroad

Contrarily, in my home country of Cameroon, taxis are the more economical choice for main roads, while motorbikes are ideal for navigating within neighborhoods. In various regions, vans and tuk-tuks are abundant on street corners.

Certain countries offer online platforms like Uber, enabling you to effortlessly summon a ride that will collect you directly from your doorstep.

When planning is done in advance, a travel abroad becomes relaxing and organized. The above questions are essential to note before leaving your country. I suggest writing them out and having clear options for each of them.

Christian Single Status: 3 Ways to Maintain It

God, our creator, knows our purpose, and everything we need to excel in life is in the Bible.  The word of God helps us to define our identity. Irrespective of whether we have a Christian single status or a married one.

Like God, our spirits are eternal, and in light of eternity, it is essential to note that there will be no marriage in heaven. Matthew 22:30, “For in the resurrected state neither do [men] marry nor are [women] given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven.”

With this in mind, we must be careful to refrain from defining ourselves through our marital status here on earth.

Mathew 19: 7-12, “They said to him, “Why then did Moses command one to give a certificate of divorce and to send her away?” He said to them, “Because of your hardness of heart Moses allowed you to divorce your wives, but from the beginning it was not so. And I say to you: whoever divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, and marries another, commits adultery.”

The disciples said to him, “If such is the case of a man with his wife, it is better not to marry.” But he said to them, “Not everyone can receive this saying, but only those to whom it is given. For there are eunuchs who have been so from birth, and there are eunuchs who have been made eunuchs by men, and there are eunuchs who have made themselves eunuchs for the sake of the kingdom of heaven. Let the one who is able to receive this receive it.”

Before the broken engagement, before losing a spouse or divorce….God destined, blessed, and loved us as His daughters and sons with unconditional love. Our relationship status with God doesn’t change when someone leaves or fails to enter our lives.  If we have forgotten, now is a perfect time to remind ourselves of who we are in Christ. Let’s look at these points to help us remember our identity in Christ as singles:

    A. God loves you unconditionally in your single status

True love is a person, and this person is God. No one can stop God from loving us. What a blessing!

I John 4:16 “So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.” We must believe that we already have His love.

Only God can fulfill our deepest needs, and He died to make us free and whole in every area of our lives. No human has the responsibility to define us.  1 Corinthians 7:23- 24 “You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of human beings. Brothers and sisters, each person, as responsible to God, should remain in the situation they were in when God called them.

1 John 4:10 tells us,  “In this is love, not that we have loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the propitiation for our sins.”  We cannot do anything to earn such love. Love is a gift of grace. We have the identity of love.

We must not condemn ourselves because of the rejection or the death of a loved one; but instead, we must start loving ourselves just as God loves us.

A great way to rekindle love and appreciation for ourselves is to write love verses and post them on our laptops, room walls, kitchen lockers, and even fridge doors. Speaking love verses and songs loud in front of the mirror daily to combat opposite thoughts helps us place our minds on higher things like the Word of God.

When we begin to fill our lives with the word of God through reading the Bible, watching sermons, spending time with God, and meditating on His love, we become more spiritually vibrant. Focusing on Christ will help us remember our true identity in Christ, with or without a partner.

    B. You are destined for a purpose

God predestined and ordained us before our mother’s womb. Surprise!!!…. We are not accidents.  God knows everything about us. 1 Corinthians 7: 17 “Nevertheless, each person should live as a believer in whatever situation the Lord has assigned to them, just as God has called them. This is the rule I lay down in all the churches.”

Like David said in Psalm 139:16, “Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.” Oh, yes! This is precisely who we are.

God said in Genesis 1:26, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness….”

This reflects His desire and design to imprint His nature on us, and everyone possesses these attributes. The Bible contains God’s promises towards us, but we must believe that we have His identity from DNA.

We must hold fast to knowing that He has a specific purpose for us. Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

Believing is a firm conviction that our lives have a defined purpose. We will be accountable to God for how we accomplish His purposes in our lives, whether in singleness or in marriage. Our temporal earthly status of marriage or singleness is not our core identity.

Can you fulfil your purpose without marrying?

Jesus and Paul did not marry, yet they fulfilled their purposes.

Our Lord Jesus Christ completed his purpose when he said in John 19:30, “… It is finished.” With that, he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.”

On the other hand, Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Tim 4:7 “I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith.” Before he died, he advised people to be single like him. 1 Corinthians 7: 6-7 I say this as a concession, not as a command. I wish that all of you were as I am. But each of you has your own gift from God; one has this gift, another has that. Now to the unmarried and the widows I say: It is good for them to stay unmarried, as I do. But if they cannot control themselves, they should marry, for it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

A woman wearing a yellow dress smiling, representing a Christian single status

What to do to maintain your Christian single status

Whether you recognize it or not, God loves us, and He has a prosperous future for us. Choose in this season of grief and hurt to remain faithful to God by loving God, loving yourself, focusing on your purpose, and even loving people who have hurt you. Love them by praying for them.

Luke 6:27 commands us to “bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you.”

The human mind is forgetful sometimes, but God gave us all a retrospective mind. We should invest time in reminding ourselves consistently about God’s love for us and how purposeful we are. God never created anything worthless. We will always be valuable to God.

Benefits of having a Christian single status

1 Corinthians 7: 23-25, “I would like you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the Lord’s affairs—how he can please the Lord.  But a married man is concerned about the affairs of this world—how he can please his wife—  and his interests are divided. An unmarried woman or virgin is concerned about the Lord’s affairs: Her aim is to be devoted to the Lord in both body and spirit. But a married woman is concerned about the affairs of this world—how she can please her husband. I am saying this for your own good, not to restrict you, but that you may live in a right way in undivided devotion to the Lord.

Christ’s definition and identity of us exceed any earthly relationship we can ever cultivate. We can be single and peaceful. Having a Christian single status doesn’t mean we are not whole. God considers us complete in Christ.

Remember that marriage is not an identity, but a characteristic of our whole being.  It is a gift for some. While marriage is an institution that can help us fulfill our purposes in God, we can also fulfill our purposes for God in and through our Christian single status.

Peter and his family’s transport modes

During the summer, my family and I go on trips. We explore places both in our country and sometimes in other countries. I love spending time with my family and discovering new places with different transport modes.

Before we start our journey, I hear my parents discussing how we should travel. Sometimes, my mom suggests taking a flight because it’s fast and safe. My dad doesn’t always agree since he thinks it can be expensive.

Other times, my dad prefers taking the bus. He says it’s cheaper and less stressful. Plus, he likes that we can stop at different places and explore the city along the way.

I personally enjoy traveling by train, especially the subway. It’s affordable and reliable. The underground subway is well-organized and safe. When we take the express train, it’s so fast and comfortable, especially in the VIP section.

Which other transport modes did Peter’s family use?

Now that my grandparents are older, they prefer traveling by car. They think it’s a time-saving and secure option. My grandma likes the freedom of stopping wherever she wants to rest or eat. My grandpa admits that driving for long hours can be tiring, but he likes having control over when he starts his trips.

On the other hand, my uncle Paul is a fan of traveling by ship or boat. He says it’s safe and smooth, and he enjoys being on the water. However, he mentioned that bad weather can sometimes cause delays. When I told him I want to try traveling in a canoe on a lake, he promised to take me to a beach, so I could experience it.

My older brother, Moses, prefers using his motorbike for shorter trips. He finds it easier to park, and it’s more fuel-efficient. He also likes that it’s faster and more affordable to maintain.

My sister likes using tuk-tuks when we’re in the city. They’re like motorized tricycles and can maneuver through traffic easily. They’re cheaper than taxis, but I don’t like using them when it’s raining since they’re not completely covered.

    7 Best Rwanda Restaurants

Embark on a culinary journey in Kigali and Nyanza cities, where vibrant Rwanda restaurants patios adorned with African fabrics and unique decor invite you to dine in style. While I don’t consider myself a food enthusiast, I found myself noticing and savoring the flavors of various meals during my dining experiences in Rwanda. The city boasts an abundance of dining establishments, catering to a diverse range of preferences. In this post, I share my personal restaurant reviews and recommendations, understanding that taste is subjective and what might not appeal to me could be a delightful treat for others.

Although I typically enjoy cooking at home, I embraced the opportunity to explore new flavors and indulge in occasional bites while venturing out. Nourishing my appetite with familiar dishes like plantain, red beans, chicken sauce, and an array of vegetables provided a sense of comfort and connection to my roots. Interestingly, many of the food items mirrored those from my home country, Cameroon, bridging the gap between cultures.

While I anticipated savoring every bite, there were instances where my preferences didn’t align with the flavors presented. Could this be the norm for a discerning eater like me? Regardless, I’m eager to share a list of the ‘Rwanda restaurants I visited, fully aware that your experience might differ. Our taste preferences are uniquely our own, rendering my perspective highly subjective. I’m excited to read your thoughts and opinions in the comments section, as we celebrate the diversity of culinary experiences.

    List of Rwanda restaurants

    Tea House Resto Hotel

On my final evening in Kigali, my friends introduced me to a charming oasis that left a lasting impression. Perched on a hilltop, the panoramic view was a breath of fresh air, prompting me to capture every unique detail through my lens. The ambiance exuded a blend of simplicity and culture, with quaint touches like the vintage ‘chain chair’ and intricately crafted wooden signs. I couldn’t contain my amusement at the whimsical wooden crafts adorning the bathroom door, while the elegant Bambu flower vases caught my eye.

    Common meals at Rwanda restaurants

While the wait for our meal seemed interminable, the anticipation was well worth it. Savoring their delectable fish brochettes and crispy plantain fries brought undeniable delight. In an attempt to immerse myself in the local flavors, I ordered Isombe (cassava leaves with peanut) and kawunga (corn fufu). However, my picky palate faced a challenge in fully embracing these traditional Rwandese dishes, leaving me with a memorable experience of trying something new. Despite the culinary adventure not aligning perfectly with my taste preferences, I embraced the opportunity with an open heart.

    Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC)

Despite my aversion to fast food, I found myself pleasantly surprised by my experience at KFC Kigali, which I even dared to visit twice. The flavors infused into the chicken were a testament to their attention to seasoning, and with each bite, the tantalizing blend of spices permeated the tender meat. The crowning glory, however, was undoubtedly the crispy chicken skin, which provided a satisfying crescendo to the feast.

sarah eating fried potatoes and chicken at KFC kigali

Adding to the delightful ensemble were the crunchy fries, their harmony with ketchup creating a symphony of flavors that perfectly complemented some of my evening repasts. What struck me the most was how this particular KFC outlet in Kigali exceeded my expectations, standing out as the most delectable rendition I’ve encountered across various countries.

    Keisen hotel-restaurant

Nestled atop one of Kigali’s lush hills in Nyamugogo, this hotel greeted me with a tempting booklet of culinary offerings. The array of choices presented a delightful challenge in decision-making, prompting me to seek assistance from the kind Manager. He graciously took the time to elucidate each unfamiliar dish, aiding my selection process.

As my stomach rumbled with hunger, I opted for the goat meat stew paired with boiled green banana. The anticipation during the wait was palpable, and after a relatively brief span of one and a half minutes, my meal arrived. To my surprise, the bowl of goat stew exceeded my expectations in size. However, my taste buds were met with an unexpected obstacle: an excessive saltiness that left my tongue somewhat disheartened.

Banana and sauce at Keisen hotel-restaurant

Notably, the Rwandan preparation of green banana involves boiling it to a tender consistency. While this is a local preference, I personally didn’t quite resonate with the resultant softness of the banana.

    Highland hotel-restaurant

Perched upon yet another of Kigali’s undulating hills, this establishment seemingly drew its moniker from its elevated location. Despite the apparent upscale aura, the premises provided a tranquil ambiance, particularly conducive for my work undertaken within the restaurant’s confines.

While diligently attending to my tasks, I found my gaze irresistibly drawn to the menu, where the enticing depiction of meatballs exerted a magnetic allure. Succumbing to the allure of temptation, I yielded to the impulse and indulged in the irresistible desire for those delectable meatballs. Opting for a triumvirate of meatballs, my anticipation was met with the arrival of my order.

a plate of meatballs and a slice of lemon

While the delightful taste of the meatballs brought satisfaction, it’s worth noting that a discernible trace of saltiness lingered on the palate. Despite this, I relished the experience of savoring those flavorful and savory meatballs during my leisurely lunch.

    Rwanda Restaurants beside the Cinema

Situated in close proximity to the expansive Canal Olympia Cinema, a cluster of dining Rwanda restaurants beckons to passersby. On a particular Saturday evening, my eagerness to partake in the grandeur of a movie on a larger canvas than my computer screen led me to the threshold of the first among them. With a wide array of culinary offerings laid out before me, I made my selection: beef soup.

To my astonishment, upon its arrival, the dish before me revealed a harmonious medley of flavors and ingredients all coexisting within the same bowl. A tapestry of flavors intertwined as banana, potatoes, a few morsels of succulent meat, and carrot amalgamated in delightful unity. While the elaborate presentation didn’t meet my initial expectation, the bold choice to embark on this culinary journey was worthy. The audacious endeavor to sample a Rwandese soup proved to be a venture worth embracing.

    Madras hotel-restaurant

Situated much like the other dining Rwandan restaurants I had encountered on my culinary journey, Madras restaurant held its own charm, residing in a separate enclave overlooking a tranquil terrace. Upon my arrival, I got a comprehensive booklet that encompassed both delectable meals and refreshing drinks. As was my custom, I embarked on the ritual of contemplation, seeking the perfect choice that would tantalize my taste buds.

After a thoughtful deliberation, aided by the patient explanations of the attentive waiter, I made my decision: I would indulge in East Africa’s beloved delicacy, the chapati. The menu tantalizingly promised a savory symphony of flavors, with meat expertly nestled within the folds of the chapati. Eagerly, I anticipated each mouthful to be a harmonious duet of the tender beef and the soft chapati.

Chapati and fries on a plate, a typical meal at Rwanda restaurants

In a swift flourish, my eagerly awaited meal appeared before me. To my surprise, the presentation before me showcased dried beef artfully draped upon a substantial chapati. While the beef slices might have been more modest in number than anticipated, they exuded a rich depth of flavor that compensated for their scarcity. To complement the hearty duo, a vibrant medley of salad adorned the plate, boasting the crisp crunch of cucumber, tomatoes, onions, and the luscious creaminess of avocado.

While my initial expectations wasn’t met, the harmonious interplay of flavors and textures ultimately created a satisfying and memorable culinary experience at Madras restaurant.

    Umut café and restaurant

During one of my downtown escapades, a sense of culinary curiosity led me to beckon a bike driver and request to be taken to the nearest café. Guided by the hum of the city’s heartbeat, we arrived at the doorstep of a café nestled in the heart of the urban bustle. Eager to appease the rumbling chorus of hunger within me, I embarked on my culinary journey by perusing the menu’s pages, a ritual I always followed with diligence.

With a sense of anticipation, I ordered the Turkish pizza, meticulously scanning through the description to grasp the medley of ingredients that would soon grace my palate. Presented before me was a light, baked dough adorned with scattered lamb, harmoniously interwoven with the vibrant hues of tomatoes. An ensemble of vegetables, including parsley, tomatoes, and a tapestry of green herbs, was delicately arranged alongside the creation. While the amalgamation of flavors intrigued me, I decided to forgo the accompanying salad, as it didn’t resonate with my personal preferences.

Savoring the unconventional “pizza” experience, I found that it defied the expectations typically associated with this dish. Despite its departure from my usual pizza encounters, I found myself craving another dish to quell my appetite. Reflecting upon the menu, I summoned another waiter and placed an order for fried chips and samosa. In my imagination, I envisioned a plate that would showcase a distinct separation between the crispy potato chips and the savory samosa.

    Common meals at Rwanda restaurants

What was strange about this place compared to other Rwanda restaurants

Regrettably, the presentation before me deviated from my preconceived notions. The waiter placed a plate of fries, enrobed in a delicate tomato sauce with a hint of saltiness, on the table. To my surprise, there was no sign of the expected beef or fish accompaniment.

The potato chips themselves exhibited an unexpected tenderness that failed to captivate my palate. Puzzled and disappointed, I sought clarification from another waiter, wondering if my order had been misinterpreted.

Undeterred by the earlier culinary misadventure, I made the decision to embark on yet another gastronomic endeavor the following morning. A sense of curiosity prompted me to order chapati and eggs as a takeaway for my breakfast. However, when I unveiled the offering, my expectations were met with surprise. Encased within the folds of a thick chapati dough were two eggs, seemingly embraced in an unconventional culinary embrace.

My experience at this café wasn’t good, I am mindful of the subjectivity of taste preferences. While I may not endorse this establishment based on my personal experiences, I acknowledge that culinary adventures are often a matter of individual taste, and perhaps someone else may discover enjoyment in their offerings.

Quiet Heaven Nyanza Hotel and Restaurant

After a lengthy three-hour journey from Kigali to Nyanza city, hunger greeted me on that Sunday night. Despite my empty stomach’s protests, I opted for sleep, assured that a hearty breakfast awaited in the morning. However, my anticipation turned to a slight frown when I was presented with burnt fried eggs and two slices of bread, leaving my face slightly disheartened. Although I had indulged in various fruits while waiting, I couldn’t deny the pleasant taste of the African tea.

The hotel, conveniently located just 15 minutes from the bus stop, was easily accessible by bike or car. The spacious restaurant, boasting a breezy ambiance, beckoned me with the promise of delightful meals. The substantial rooms, adorned with comfortable beds, caught my attention. I was pleasantly surprised by the ingenious addition of a roomy closet attached to the open bathroom and toilet wall. And the highlight? The balcony, adorned with inviting seats, provided a refreshing spot to bask in the morning sun.

Take a food journey and let me know your opinion. My list is concise because I rarely visit restaurants. This is typical of someone who cooks almost daily. However, if you are in Kigali or Nyanza, there will be something delicious at many pricy Rwanda restaurants. Good appetite in advance.

There are some points that are repeated, and I had to use synonyms to define the subject keyword. Several of them have similar points. The entire Bible summarizes the benefits we enjoy from obeying God. We cannot express our love for him and not do what his word says.

It’s impossible to be a Christian and not reflect our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ’s actions. We cannot obey if we keep offenses, can’t forgive others, or are not patient with ourselves and with God.

How My Family Opens House Doors

This rhyme describes the door sounds in every room at Lippy’s house when either she or her family members open them.

    Welcome to our home!

As you arrive, our gatekeeper swings the big gate open with a loud Grummmmmmmm sound.

Inside, my grandma greets you by opening the living room door with a gentle Criiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

Aunty Sally emerges from her guest bedroom, still sleepy, and the door creaks open with a soft Hisssssssssssssssssssss.

My brother heads to the kitchen, and the hungry kitchen door goes Crackkkkkkkkkkkk as he pushes it.

At the dining room, Grandpa opens the door with a satisfied Yummmmmmmmmm sound.

In a hurry, my younger sister closes the toilet door with a quick Raaaaaaaaaaaa.

Uncle John steps out of the sweaty bathroom, and the door goes Prammmmmmmmmm.

When our cousins are ready to study, they close the quiet library room door with a soft Diiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii.

Dad’s study door slowly closes with a creaky Greeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

My friends and I burst into the game room with laughter, making a joyful Hhhaaahaaahaha sound.

Nanny Paty enters the laundry room, and the door slides open with a smooth Vroooooooooooooooooo.

As the night falls, we all close our bedroom doors, and they go Dizzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
