One of the advantages of studying at Handong International Law School

Handong International law school (HILS) is one of Korea’s finest American law schools. This law faculty under the Handong Global University(HGU) is an exceptional home for legal enthusiasts and Christian fanatics. It was my first choice, and I remain grateful I was admitted to study there.

Choosing a law school was a challenge during my search. However, after my 2019 graduation, I am elated I could be called a Hilsian. One of the most memorable things I did, was to attend a Christian lawyer’s conference in 2018. This is a joint initiative between HGU and Alliance Defending Freedom International.

HILS focuses on the biblical command to ‘Do justice, love mercy, and walk humbly with your God.’ It brags to be a center of creative legal education in Asia for the 21st century. It is indeed a well of legal practical.

On the other hand, ADF International upholds the vision of advancing the God-given right to live and speak the truth. With emphasis on the following topic; Sanctity of Life
    Religious Freedom
    Freedom of Speech
    Marriage & Family
Parental Rights, ADF International is committed to making a change in the world.

The marriage between HILS and ADF resulted in a special annual conference open to law school students and lawyers from around the world. I was opportune to be a part of the annual meeting in Bangkok, Thailand.

What is Advocates International Student Chapter?

Advocates International Student Chapter (AISC) is a student community of “Advocates International (AI)”, the International Organization for Christian Legal Professions.

AISC has its roots from Handong International Law School. The former Dean, Lynn Buzzard, who is one of the founding fathers of AI established AISC.

What is the vision of AISC?

“A worldwide fellowship of advocates and law students bearing witness of Jesus Christ through the legal profession”.

WHat is the mission of AISC?

“Encouraging and enabling Advocates and Law Students to meet locally, organize nationally, cooperate regionally and link globally to promote justice, rule of law, religious freedom, reconciliation and integrity.”

    Sarah and law school friends
    Sarah and law school friends

How is Handong Global University and ADF International involved?

They support law school students on three levels:

    1. Encouraging AI and AISC networking on student level in countries around the world.
    2. Promoting wide spread awareness and support for six areas of advocacy: family and Community, Justice for the people with low income, Peace and reconciliation, religious freedom, rule of law and sanctity of human life.
    3. Increasing awareness of the global issues which threaten the above listed areas. Religious freedom has been a key area of discussion in Asia.

    How does AISC work?

    It carries out its mission in the following ways;

    1. By holding intercessory prayers for the persecuted churches in other countries.
    2. Carry out legal research and discuss legal issues related to the above listed six topics. This could also be via sharing resources, information and networking with lawyers.
    3. Another main role of being a part of the Advocates International Student Chapter is to participate in the annual Advocates Asia Conferences and/or Advocates International Conference.
    4. Other practical activities as a law student.

My experience as a member of the Handong International Law School AISC

I was elated to be accepted by Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF) to participate at the conference. Though a non – potential lawyer (Masters student), I was welcomed as a legal mind and given equal respect as my classmates (Juris Doctorates). We all paid an affordable attendance fee and were lodged at the high class Holiday Inn hotel in Thailand’s capital for 3 days.

Every mornings and evenings within those days, we assembled at the small ventilated, beautifully decorated hall downstairs. All sessions began with worship and praise led by students as a way of acknowledging that Jesus is Lord of all.

    Sarah and some lawyers

The rest of the hours were diverse talks from some HILS professors and invited AI lawyers. In that year, we were delighted with the presence of the HILS Dean Enlow and Prof. John Park. For a few minutes, we heard the experience of Christian lawyers in different countries, mostly in Asia and the US.

    How were the sessions?

In some sessions, we had round table group discussions between AISC and AIs. Thus, it was possible to ask direct questions and learn from lawyers in a more open way. I remember learning more about the legal situation and religious challenges many people face in India from the law school students from India. It was great to have insights about the Nepali law and to share about Cameroon law.

Whether for on a street walk in Asia’s famous city, or after the sessions, it was a time to build relationships with people I might otherwise never have met. Even during lunch, there was something to say and learn as we bite of the delights from Holiday Inn.

If you decide to study at HILS, you are sure to have a unique educational program whth the design to equip ‘lawyers without borders’ with professionalism, Christian values, international focus and servant leadership.

University of San Carlos Museum: Cebu’s must see culture world

The University of San Carlos museum is famous for its anthropological and archaeological exhibits. Unlike many national museums, it’s hosted in the campus of the university, making it perfect to explore the corridors of a typical educational environment in the Philippines.

The museum is found on the main first floor beside the entrance to the campus and is divided into two sections slightly far away from each other. For a small private place, l was impressed to see that they had invested so much to maintain the 16th-century practice of artificial skull deformation on infants for aesthetic reasons.

Here are a few artefacts I decided to catch on camera.

What is the history of the University of San Carlos museum?

This campus museum has been operating as early as 1952. However, it was inaugurated on April 23, 1967. Unlike any other cultural site, the museum was inaugurated with specific rites conducted by the then Verbite priest. At that time, he was the University of San Carlos President, Rudolf Rahmann and then First Lady Imelda Marcos.

As time passed, in 1967, the museum is now hosted in two large former classrooms and another room. Since 2017 till my 2023 visit time, it has been occupying the ground floor wings of the Arthur Dingman Building along P. Del Rosario Street at USC’s Downtown Campus. That means, infrastructurally, there isn’t a specific design.

Sarah inside the university of San Carlos museum
Sarah inside the university of San Carlos museum

How much does it cost to enter the museum?

The University of San Carlos is located a few kilometres from the busy, famous Colon street. It’s easy to find with a taxi depending on where you are located in Cebu City, but I took a walk obeying my Google map directions, and was there in barely 10 mins from the main street.

As in every cultural site, visitors are expected to pay before entering the museum. It wasn’t a surprise to me. I paid a few Filipino PESOS (less than 10USD) and spent a long time viewing each item as l wished.

Unfortunately, no tour guide is included in the fee, so you will have to walk around alone.  I didn’t mind because typically, l prefer to read and take pictures at my convenience. Amazingly, all of the descriptions were in English. That made it easier to understand and grasp the huge change in culture over several decades for Filipinos.

How many artefacts are in the University of San Carlos museum?

According to an inventory made in 1988 by then USC Museum curator Jane Calderon-Hayhow, the museum’s collection comprises 9,606 artefacts, objects and specimens, Wikipedia reports.

I didn’t have time to count all of them, but l can confirm there were many pieces, spread on both sides of the walls, and a lot more on table-like stands in the middle of the rooms.

    When to go there?

One will expect a museum should be open every day, morning to evening, at least that has been my experience visiting others in different countries. This one was strangely different. I came the first day at around 3pm and was told the cultural world was closed already. Disappointed, the guards encouraged me to come the next day much earlier. In obedience, I returned the next day at a few minutes to 12pm.

With warm smiles, the guards ushered me to the museum where l met a smiley Filipino staff, sitting alone. In their typically welcoming way, she spoke clear English, inquired about my nationality, received the payment and told me, she needs a break in the next 30 mins indirectly meaning, l couldn’t tour the place until after her break which will last 1hr 30 mins. I found that weird but understood it was part of the rules.

To wind time, l found a seat in front of the cafeteria and a busy, well decorated campus corridor. As l listened to students chatting in Tagalog with smiles and laughters among themselves, l missed my campus days.

The sun rays at before and few hours after midday are unfriendly in Cebu making me dizzy as l sat there almost jobless. I returned when it was time and began my tour from outside. Apparently the rooms are full to capacity, so the corridor in front of the museum is also like an outdoor exhibition for anyone to see. From there, l was all smiles to see ancient phones and a host of old items l was familiar with.

What was special about the University of San Carlos Museum?

There are ancient boat coffins dug up in Anda, Bohol, in the 1970s. This was my least expected item.

On one other section, there were some fascinating limestone burial jars dating from about the 6th century. Note the covers – carved phalluses for men, roofs for women, faces for datu (chiefs).

A section had just wooden carved sculptures of people believed to be gods in those days. It felt creepy and fetish, but it’s part of the life of those people and some people today.

The ceramic bowls displayed on several shelves made some sections almost boring, as there wasn’t much to see, at least for my non-archaeological mind.

However, for many items, especially the butterfly sanctuary harbouring several species, l remember smiling for a few seconds unconsciously because of the outstanding colours. God is really a Designer, I whispered in my mind.

    Items at the museum
    Items at the museum

I have no doubt, birders will be amazed at the large Philippines Eagle. I was taken aback for a minute when I saw it too. Its gigantic size was unique to behold.

Above all, I was impressed by the Christian statutes of Jesus Christ, beautifully sculpted on several parts. Though just a symbolic image of God, it spoke volumes to why I had seen a lot of Catholic churches around the streets. Many Filipinos believe in God and consider themselves Christians. A few, I spoke to, joyfully shared their lives with God and couldn’t stop referring to Him during our conversations.

History always comes to life after such visits to me. Somehow, l felt glad to explore the museum for almost 2 hours, slowly walking around and reading.

Here’s a link to several other museums and tourist to-dos around the world.

Best things to do in Limbe, Cameroon

Limbe is one of Cameroon’s Atlantic coast cities. It’s famous for its black sand beaches due to the volcanic soil from West Africa’s tallest volcanic mountain-mount Cameroon.

Besides the large shoreline which served as port for some of the earliest colonizers to enter the country, Limbe is a herbarium and houses diverse plant species.

For animal lovers, the best place to go is the Limbe Wildlife Centre. They rescue and rehabilitate primates, such as lowland gorillas.

Historically, Limbe was called “Victoria” under the British administration. Strangely, it wasn’t considered a part of the previous German colony, Kamerun.

In an agreement, on May 7, 1886 Great Britain and Germany agreed to exchange Victoria and its vicinity for German rights at the Forcados River in Nigeria and St. Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa.

However, on March 28, 1887 Victoria and its vicinity became a part of the German administration.

According to church history, it was also at this time that the Swiss Presbyterian missionaries bought the land from the Baptist Missionary Society in 1887.

By 1915, Victoria became a British territory again.

After independence in 1982, the first President – Ahmadou Ahidjo renamed the city as “Limbe”.

Sadly, records have this city as the home for the devastating transatlantic slave trade. The neighbourhood called Bimbia still contains ancient proof of slavery. It has been restored for tourists, as a way to aid understanding about the hostile past.

My father’s village, now a big neighbourhood – Botaland is located in this city. I have been there countless times. However, will list just a few things to do below.

Eat BBQ fish at the Limbe main public beach

Unlike many countries where people go to the beach to swim, Cameroonians go to eat. Presumably, many Cameroonians cannot swim. Except for those who live at the edge of the ocean like in my village, I know many people go to the beachside just to relax on the cemented benches, and discuss with friends and family. You can even watch footballers playing beside the beach.

Though people go to eat, they typically only eat BBQ fish, commonly referred to as“roasted fish”. It has a way of quenching our raging taste buds. This fish is sold as a whole with all the bones, and served with spicy chilly sauce. That means, we enjoy chewing the bones and sucking the juice of the head part.

As compliments, some people eat the fish with BBQ or fried plantain -a fruit that looks like bananas. Others prefer bobolo or meondo, – local ground fermented cassava.

The taste for is smoky, succulent and delicious. As extras, some people will sprinkle chopped onions, carrots or mayonnaise.

Known in French as Poisson Braisé, this common delicacy is widely loved in Cameroon. It’s guaranteed to eat freshly harvested fish from the ocean. But you can buy refrigerated BBQ fish at every street corner around the country.

If you like other seafood, crabs and shrimps are all BBQed too, though I like to buy it fresh and boil it at home.

Please go to Precious (a Cameroonian food blogger) if you want to see the recipe of how to BBQ fish, using Cameroonian ingredients.

Relax with fresh air at the Limbe Botanic Garden

Limbe Botanic Garden or Limbe Botanical Gardens (LBG) is one of Cameroon’s finest green places.

Historically, it was created in 1892, during the German colonial dispensation. Though it was done with an agronomic intent, it has now become one of the main recreational and tourist attractions of the southwest region.

In 1892, Paul Rudolph Preuss, and his German team, started growing this garden. Records say it was a trial garden. The main motive was to make it a centre for experimentation and acclimatisation of useful tropical species. They include; rubbercoffeecocoaoil palmbananateak, and sugar cane, destined for Kamerun and other German colonies.

According to Wikipedia, in its heyday, it was considered one of the most important tropical botanical gardens in the world.

To show its importance, in 1920 the British administration took over the garden. This was done in unison with the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, which provided advice and training.

What is the history of this garden?

From 1932 and until 1958, the Cameroon government sent staff to administer the garden. Since 1961, the government still manages the place, though I think they can do.

In 1988 a partnership concluded with the United Kingdom allowed its renovation and development. Currently, the botanical garden is a conservation, education, science, tourism and leisure hotspot.

Today the garden, covers 250 hectares (620 acres), has no more than 48 hectares (120 acres) stretching a few kilometres from the Atlantic Ocean.

Historians say this is the second oldest in Africa. They add, it is home to unique spices and fruits; cinnamon, nutmeg, mango, ancient cycads and an unnamed tree that locals describe as ‘African Viagra’.

With a small entrance fee, both Cameroonians and tourists can explore the gigantic tree species/plants. It is free to take pictures and enjoy a quiet walk in nature. Though, there can be a lot of mosquitoes in the evening hours especially during the rainy season, I recommend wearing long clothes or spraying anti-mosquitoe sprays.

In 2014, I remember dancing and singing with ecstasy at the theatre area because one of the world’s best Gospel musician – Don Moen was having a concert there. I had been listening to his music since the early 2000s. It was a joyful day to worship God live with him and his amazing, skilled band.

    Shop at the beach market

Beach Markets around the world are generally the one-stop shop for fresh seafood, directly from the ocean, lake, river etc

Limbe is no exception, with fish markets littered on every corner of the extensive ocean. Here, you can discuss directly with the fishermen on their wooden canoes and buy as much as your budget can handle. The prices are very cheap because these men don’t want to take the fish to their homes.

Some people buy it, go to the vendors who BBQ and watch them grill it in minutes. This could cost only $2-3 for a big fish.

If you come after midday, when typically the fishermen are done selling, you can buy from retailers on an open area. As expected, the prices will be higher.

One thing is guaranteed, you will see varieties of sea fish, crabs, shrimps, sea snails, and smoked fish. Cameroonians do not eat other seafood like octopus, squid and a host of famous delicacies in Asia. Many people, if not everyone, doesn’t eat raw fish/ seafood.

On a different part of this area, there are small souvenirs shops packed with Cameroonian clothes, jewellery, wooden arts items and a host of memorable gifts.

Take a walk around the historic city

The disctioanry defines to take a walk as to wander round a town or city, especially when looking for work or having nowhere to stay.

Many times, I wander just to exercise my legs. A way to explore the ancient colonial city is to walk. There are tarred streets around the main road where you can stroll to admire the city. On one of my many trips, I saw very old churches. Despite the fact that a lot of modern renovations have been done in recent years, several of them date back to the colonial era.

As earlier mentioned, Limbe remains one of Cameroon’s colonial cities that is why there are still a few colonial monuments. One of the most celebrated British Missionaries, Alfred Saker has a large monument with a sculpted face. He was the head of the Baptist Missionary Society and was reputed for establishing churches in Southern Cameroons. WIthin his reign in 1844-1876, he succeeded to collaborate with the then natives of the Sawa ethnic group to translate the Bible into the Duala language.

In honor of him, the Baptist church built a large secondary and high school in Limbe but named it after him. Several years till date, every one in the southwest region knows the famous Saker Baptist College.

    Colonial history of Cameroon
    Colonial history

Urban development has led to a lot of changes in the city, but it is not uncommon to still see a few colonial buildings. It is a wonder to me how those structures were built to resist the severe weather changes over these many decades.

Some are government offices. Regardless of the negative effects of colonization, I think we benefited from unique buildings. The architecture and designs are ancient, but the materials used were high quality.

    Go horse riding

Horse riders can develop better reflexes and a sense of balance. They build on their coordination as they use their entire body to guide and propel the horse forward.

Reports say riding also offers cardio benefits. For example, liftiing the saddles onto the back of a horse, mucking stalls, moving hay bales, etc., builds muscles and physical strength. These are some of the benefits for a horse owner

Horse riding is a common beach exercise in Limbe. For less than a dollar, anyone can borrow a horse and enjoy a few minutes of fresh air as the horse runs down the black sandy beach. They are trained to see people daily so its unlikely they can resist strangers.

Typically, the rider walks or runs alongside while controling it.

For many its a worthy experience as their friends, parners or family members take pictures of them either scared or laughing.

Hot Air Balloon Safari in Serengeti: What to Expect

A hot air balloon safari over the Serengeti is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. I highly recommend that adventurous tourists like me to plan to stay at the Serengeti park for at least two days to allow time for this activity.

Additionally, hot air balloon flights need to be pre-arranged in order to ensure guaranteed availability due to the limited space of only 16 passengers in a balloon. The balloons can accommodate adults and children, with some limitations in exceptional cases.

Generally, children must be at least four years old and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Safari companies recommend that adults be in good physical and mental condition. For example, Adults who are over 265 lbs (120 kg) may be required to purchase an additional spot on the balloon (twice the cost) for safety precautions, though this can be waived depending on flight occupancy at the discretion and prior approval from the pilot.

My hot air balloon experience in Serengeti

When we arrived the night before our flight, a staff from Miracle Balloon came to have a talk with us. He gave us general information about how a hot air balloon works and what to expect. We had to sign authorization forms consenting we will abide by the rules of the flight.

    Miracle Balloon consent form
    Miracle Balloon consent form

We equally had to give our contact detail and affirm we were healthy to go on the flight.

At 5am the next day in the morning, we had to leave our camp tents and board vans with the Miracle Balloon staff. They took us to a place almost 20 mins away.

    Pre-departure routine

It was an open air area with a lot of people. We were all offered hot coffee and tea. I am not a fan of hot drinks, but l happily drank because it was very cold.

Arusha has freezing early morning temperatures. I assumed in September it could be warm, but it was chilly. I recommend taking a jacket or a pullover. Furthermore, I wore a jacket, some thick gloves, socks and I tied my hair to keep my ears warm.

For about 15 minutes, we had the time to chat with others and make friends from around the world.

    serengeti park

The pilots were introduced to us, and they made short welcoming speeches and general safety information.

While we chatted, we were issued safety belts and taught how to strap them.

How is the hot air balloon inflated?

Shortly after, l walked to the launch site, where l saw the balloon deflated and spread on the ground.

I noticed almost 20-25 staff are required for the launch and recovery. I heard it was referred to as an “envelope,”.

Firstly, the ground crew opens the envelope by laying it across the ground. A large fan is used to inflate the envelope partially before takeoff. The sound of the fan is deafening. When the envelope is about half-full, the crew attaches the basket and burner. The basket remains fully secured to the ground during inflation. The burner is used to inflate the envelope fully.

    inflating the hot air balloon
    Inflating the hot air balloon

Watching the inflation and preparation is an incredible experience, within minutes, l saw the truly massive size of the balloon. Once the balloon is fully inflated, the crew helped all passengers aboard. I was surprised to see the basket of the balloon is sectioned into multiple compartments for both our comfort and safety.

The ground crew steadies the balloon as our pilot “Mr Bill” gave us and other guests a safety overview. When everyone is set, the burner is turned on once again, and we slowly felt the balloon aloft to the ground.

The crew guides the basket until the balloon is safely launched. We quickly learned that no two hot air balloon safaris are the same. The balloons rely on air currents, such as wind direction and speed. The pilot only controls the up and down movement. This is why hot air balloons require a chase team down, following the balloon on the road.

Advantages of riding a hot air balloon

Generally, hot air balloons fly over areas of the Serengeti park that are restricted to safari vehicles! During our flight, even the altitude of our balloon flight is different – sometimes, we rose high above the plains, so we could see for miles while at other times, it seems we were slightly closer to earth, giving us close-up views of the animals.

As we ascended aerially, beautiful features unfold before your eyes – meandering rivers and lush grasslands. From this vantage point, we realized that we could locate wildlife with little guidance – giraffes, elephants, gazelles, hippos and many other grazers and foragers. The Pilot told us, if we were lucky, we may even spot the lordly predators like lions, hyenas, cheetahs and other hunters.

    serengeti park from the sky
    Serengeti park from the sky

As we sailed above the park, l was slightly scared, except the Pilot’s one shared the same section with me and encouraged to not be scared. I gained a greater perspective and deeper appreciation for the intricacies of the Serengeti ecosystem, as well as the synergistic relationship between flora, fauna and human. We were able to see how animals feed upon vegetation, moving when a new supply is needed.

We watched herds move toward the water to drink and bathe.

How long is the hot air balloon experience?

Generally, the hot air balloon ride lasts about one hour, but it’s an experience that will last for a lifetime and very much worth its high price.

After landing, the ground crew helped us out and made a small table for a customary champagne toast to celebrate not only our experience, but also the incredible beauty what we discovered during our superb dream holiday in Tanzania.

Guests having champagne after the landing of the hot air balloon
Guests having champagne after the landing of the hot air balloon

There was juice too for those who didn’t want to drink alcohol or who wanted to mix it.

Within almost 20-30mins, the Pilot told us the history of this tradition. It was an action done by the first French hot air balloon pilots.

    Bush breakfast

After of chitchatting and sharing the sky stories, we boarded the vans again to another area for the bush breakfast, as we soon found out. Located still inside the Serengeti national park, there was a simple section designed with tables and chairs like an outdoor dinning room with a large canopy.

Upon arrival, guests are welcomed with enchanting Swahili songs and loud clapping. The smiles and dancing was delightful to watch.

After we sat, we received the variety of breakfast items to eat like bread, butter, jam, eggs, bacons and host of others.

    Guests eating breakfast
    Guests eating breakfast

When we were almost about to finish eating, we got a strange announcement. The cooks had baked a delicious cake. Though in September, all August borns and wedding anniversaries/newly-weds were invited to cut the cakes and celebrate in a special way.

Who would imagine I will eat a birthday cake in the middle of a wildlife park? I never thought about it, but I was happy.

As we cut the cakes, the amazing Miracle Baloon team continues singing other joyful Swahili songs. I was full of smiles.

That gesture remains one of my highlights in 2022.

What was the most surprising thing?

Shortly after we finished eating, the Pilots of the two balloons walked around and issued everyone a certificate.

On a designed cardboard paper, our names were handwritten by the Pilot, and he mentioned the kinds of animals we saw from the sky. To crown the seemingly “graduation”ceremony, we all had a big family photo shot with the beautiful wildlife grass decorating our background.

The smiles and shock were uncontrollable, at least for me.

    Restroom in the wildlife
    Restroom in the wildlife

    How to end the tour

My last surprise was to use the unique restroom called “The Loo with a View”. I was unsure what to expect when we were told that name. I recall everyone laughing when the pilot said it and invited us to use it.

It sounded weird for us to be encouraged to use the toilet. However, out of curiosity, I went there before we departed. A big wow and laughter were my only reactions. Though a simple hard plastic tent, the back part had a net which allows you to see the park, presumably to give you enough time to wipe up and run in case a wild animal is coming to attack.

I really liked the stone design for the sink. Somehow, I still wonder how they connected water to make everything modern.

The pictures below will give you the best explanation.

It really was a loo with a difference.

The last way to cement this experience is to shop at the Miracle Baloon tent. It is just a table with a lot o books, mostly children about animals in that live in the Serengeti National park. I gladly bought a book for my baby nieces. There were other souvenirs too.

I recommend using Miracle Balloon for safaris in the sky. This was the best experience I had for my holiday.

    Best Activities in Seoul

You might have heard about South Korea through Samsung or Posco conglomerates. Yes, the tiny peninsula country is thriving in technology, arguably one of the best in the world in recent times.

If you are daring like me and want to explore a new place, l guarantee life in Korea will be a favourable one for you. It was the highlight of my staying abroad life, and l cannot help but make helpful recommendations of what you can do should you choose to live there.

Activities in Seoul-Korea’s powerhouse city, are numerous. Here’s what you can plan on in advance.

The first best activities in Seoul are to watch a blockbuster movie at a cinema and eat at a local market

Who doesn’t live movies? That will be a general question. Many people do. One way to enjoy high class comfort when watching a film is to go to a cinema in Seoul. The design of the inner hall is unique, and the chairs are stuffed with soft fabric to provide relaxation.

I need to comment about the video quality from the gigantic screens. It is bright, making the images almost realistic. As for the audio, it’s almost as if the person is sitting next to you. I could hear every sound with clarity.

I am not a movie fanatic, but it was an awesome experience watching movies at the cinemas around Korea. If you are wondering about the language, as l guessed, worry no more. There are English movies with Korean subtitles and vice versa. But as you guessed, more movies are in Korean.

    How can to get tickets?

There are many ways to purchase your ticket. Most are affordable below 10USD.

To facilitate your time, you can download the cinema app, choose and buy your ticket online. There are also sales counters in front of the movie theatres, so don’t be shy to walk in and find out if you can watch a movie or reserve for another day.

Koreans love movies. It takes a short time before all tickets are sold out, especially if famous actors/actresses are part of the movie. That means, you will need to book early, but be sure to enjoy the time with a big cup of popcorn and plenty soda types to choose from.

I cannot overemphasize the fun you will have, but can assure you, you will have fun.

Touring a market is a common thing for anyone who wants to enjoy the cultural vibe of a country. After a long street walk, l ended my evening eating at the Dongdaemun market food court.

It was time to dine on some delicious Korean food and feast on the side dishes too. The stores open even late at night, so shopping is not limited to the day alone

The second-best activities in Seoul are to attend network dinners and streets

Korea is a fast-growing country and there are a lot of activities to do in Seoul. This might come in as an unlikely tourist activity, but it’s a recommendation l couldn’t hide.

South Korea is a world giant when it comes to businesses, and they are open to encourage startups. Regardless of the area of interest, there are several startup events held weekly around Seoul. Most of them are held at the weekend to allow for more participants, but l am sure you can find some during the week.

I was elated to be a participant for one event aimed at encouraging youths. The event which was a dinner at 7pm began with an introduction from the organizers and a short time for interactions. My first surprise was that there were no seats. The small hall was well light with small tables and free coffee.

It was a networking event geared towards people meeting others and discussing further projects if they want to start a business.

What to expect at such events?

There are always rewards for participating in activities in Korea. I still don’t know if it’s a tradition. Koreans treasure their time, maybe that’s why they appreciate people who choose to spend theirs with them, especially for fruitful reasons.

Another surprise was a game. We answered questions, and those who gave the correct ones received gifts. I won one of the games and received an expensive set of body lotions from a famous brand. It was an evening well spent, and l was glad to speak to several people from different countries.

If you just want to make new friends, this is a perfect way to meet international students and foreign workers. One thing is sure, there will be smiles and a lot of conversation. Some people who had plans to stay longer in Korea were willing to exchange contacts and start up a business.

I didn’t continue communication with the many lovely people l met there, but l was glad l spent that evening productively.

    activities in seoul

    Visit Gangnam Square

If you are a K-pop music fanatic, you might have heard of the popular Gangnam Style song. It’s one of Korea’s hits, loved by many people. The dancing energy in the song is contagious.

I was surprised to hear Gangnam was the name of one of Korea’s main, bustling streets.

Whether through the subway or the bus, l recommend stopping by the large monument at Gangnam Square. The lights in the night can be blinding, but the daytime view is remarkable. Shops are littered all around this area, so prepare a budget for a Korean souvenir. Your activities in Seoul will only be complete if you do this.

The third-best activities in Seoul are to shop at an underground shopping centre and relax at parks

Visiting shopping malls and shopping is one thing many people like to do. In Korea, there are several underground shopping centres. I have never been there at the early morning hours but l know from mornings (8amish) to late evenings, there are countless shoppers at underground markets buying clothes, shoes, cosmetics and anything simple to carry.

These places are located at subway stations. I used to say they were temptations calling my name to buy something. I cannot explain how surprised l was to see a whole new life outside the natural air. Every shop is well ventilated, large and has the same items as shops on the street.

You haven’t seen Korean life until you go under the ground. That’s hilarious to say, but l can guarantee you it is a little wonder. Coming from a country without subways, it left me in awe. I still wonder how long it took them to dig and build, but l can say l enjoyed my tours there.

Whether it’s just window shopping or actual shopping, there’s something for everyone.

    What to expect?

Most times l just touched and appreciated things. Some items were cheaper there than outside shops. I still can’t forget the warm smiles and thankful comments from some Korean vendors. Be ready to engage in a small discussion. I think Koreans have built a strong customer service culture.

Many are very welcoming when you come to their places, and some will inquire about your nationality. Though English is not a common language, a few will dare to keep a conversation with you. For black skin people like me, don’t be surprised if someone asks for a picture. They just like your smile if you give one freely like I do.

If you are hungry, be sure you can stop by at any of the many underground restaurants. There’s something delicious everywhere in Korea.

    seoul street

    Take a nature walk

Korea is one of the leaders in environmental protection. Growing grass and trees is a serious responsibility, and the government is deliberate about maintaining it. I spent some days touring parks and resting at small artificial-made lakes around the city. Though an unlikely thing to do among the activities in Seoul, if you need to chill, resting at a park is one way to enjoy nature in the heart of this beautiful Asian nation.

The vegetation in some places offer a picturesque view, l can promise you, your phone will ask you to take a picture.

In some places around Seoul, there are open wooden resting house-like buildings, designed with ancient Korean roof materials.

Inside, there are wooden benches attached to the walls. These places are public and free for anyone to rest. It was one of my best places to relax from the summer heat and just reflect on life.

The fourth best activities in Seoul are to attend and present at conferences

Koreans treasure knowledge and will do a lot to get it. I was impressed to hear and see them organize conferences and events, invite foreign guests and invest time to learn. This culture of seeking for knowledge remains one of the most remarkable thing about Koreans. They are determined to know new things and to invest time to teach people about their culture.

Despite attending several conferences at the United Nations in Bangkok and other countries, l never considered myself a keynote speaker until l got an invitation to be one.

What can you do at a conference?

My faded memory recalls l was recommended to the organizers of the Seoul Global Family Convention. They sent me a very tempting offer, l couldn’t refuse. Then, l was a Law School Student at the reputed Handong International Law School.

The organization which l later found was a coalition of several Korean churches was on a mission to condemn homosexuality in Korea. Their vision was designed in a very unique way to admonish the government to not legalise LGBTq as a whole because they said it was a sin against God.

Firstly, they invited about 30 foreigners from different countries around all continents. These people l soon found out where lawyers or people who were part of the legal societies in their countries. They didn’t get someone from Cameroon so l represented my country.

Every invitee was asked to make a short presentation and to present it during the conference within specific times. I was the only student among professional lawyers, but l was glad to meet many advocates. It was a great time to hear about the laws in other nations on the topic as well as to know about the judicial situation of Korea regarding the controversial sexual topic.

We (guests) stayed at the five star Sheraton Hotel for 3 days for free. All our meals were catered for at the hotel restaurant, but we had to share hotel rooms with a guest. I don’t recall if guests who came from abroad paid for their flights or half of it but l got a reimbursement for my roundtrip train ticket from Pohang city (down south) to Seoul city.

I learned so much within those days and will recommend anyone to make an effort to be a part of such if you can.

    Why was the conference special?

Amazingly, the organizers didn’t just make us stay in the conference for those days, they took us out to explore Seoul. We were able to visit a cruise on the harbour and have lunch on the ocean.

Secondly, we spent a few hours to worship at a local Korean church of one of the organizers and all evenings were great times to chat with other guests.

The most strange activity we had to do was to take a long street walk holding fliers that contradict homosexuality. We weren’t alone. By the time we arrived at the large public street , Gwanghwamun Square, we understood it was a rally, full of Koreans who are urging the government not to legalize homosexuality.

We had to sit and support for a few hours while the church leaders spoke and Koreans applauded. Except me, no one else in the foreign group could understand Korean but we were told to show support. With the thousands if not millions, it was almost unnoticeable that we were there but we weren’t allowed to speak publicly.

Surprisingly, the government sent police to protect people and prevent a stampede situation as they always do during rallies. This left me in shock because a similar rally like this to condemn marginalization in Cameroon erupted into a civil war which lasted for over 3 years.

    participate in conferences
    participate in conferences

What were the benefits of the conference?

In summary, this conference made me understand the power of unity. Given how serious democracy is considered in Korea, the people’s voice means a lot.

I was impressed by the extent of the preparation, and the efforts to decry a social issue they felt will convert their culture into something unbiblical. If many countries could be open for people to share their thoughts like this, there would be peace instead of war.

I would say this conference was successful because since 2018 till now, homosexuality is still illegal in Korea. Though same-sex is legal for civilians, its illegal in the military. The Korean law still doesn’t recognise same-sex marriages or civil unions and couples cannot jointly adopt children.

In addition, no national document approves of it and it’s still seen as a taboo in the Korean society.

Whether this changes in the future or not as Korea is under international pressure from the UN and other human rights organizations, l remain proud of the Korean church for stepping out to express their believe publicly.

They will forever be in the archives for upholding God’s word above societal pressure. In all their discussions, they were determined to admonish Koreans not to emulate western countries. They claimed some Koreans are just copying Americans and forgetting their origins.

These might not be common activites to do in Seoul but they will be rewarding. If you are hungry for knowledge, consider these.

Please send me an email of what you did. I might attend that conference too.

    2023 Lapu-Lapu city tour guide

Lapu-lapu city formerly called Opon is a big city in the Central Visayas region of the Philippines. It is part of the Cebu province and the host to the second-busiest airport in the country – The Mactan-cebu international airport.

I wasn’t very wowed at the arrival section, but the departure part stole my heart. You can still do last minute shopping of Filipino artefacts at the national departure section.

Sarah at the Mactan - Cebu International airport

Coconut sellers are many beside almost every street corner. I noticed the coconuts are whitish and very soft inside. So, these vendors scrape everything, put in a big jar full of ice blocks, add thick condensed milk and sell based on prices. They sold in tiny white plastic bags and would give a straw if you asked. That wasn’t natural to me, therefore I didn’t try.

It was no suprise fishing are the islanders’ primary activities. I saw countless small and big size boats and sea vessels anchored at almost every edge of the Island’s water.

There is a 2,822-foot (860-metre) bridge that was completed in 1973 which connects Mactan and Cebu islands.

The island doesn’t have much to see except swimming at different beaches. I didn’t go because they were far away and most had relatively high entrance fees, at least in my opinion. Cannoneering is common water sports for many tourists and Filipinos in Cebu. I didn’t dare because I am not courageous to dive from heights.

Here are a few things to do for free in Lapu-Lapu city.

Enjoy the sunset and a drink at 10,000 roses and café

This is a small café at the edge of the Coldova beach. You are wondering what is different in this place compared to others. I wondered too until l went and saw. The two storey has a deck with chairs and excess sea breeze. There are protective bars at the edge for people like me who preferred standing.

Inside, the smell of coffee could almost suffocate me.  I was impatient to stand on a long queue, but the number of people indicated it was tasty.

What makes this place special is the garden of thousands of roses. These artificial roses are organized in a line, separated into 5000 each and a small alley.

During the day, the bright white colour blinks corresponding to the sun rays whilst in the night, the tiny electric bulbs inside the roses creates a whole different vibe. It is the perfect picture zone for lovers and families. All you will see are smiles and hear cheeses.

I even saw a couple taking wedding prep photos there. Amazingly, If you get a spot to take your picture, you have to be fast before someone else unintentionally photo bumps.

Sarah at 10000 roses cafe Cordovo

    When to go there

It’s one of the touristic attractions and a local relaxation hotspot for Cebuans. As such, it can be very crowded, especially towards evening hours.

I went there at 4pm and cannot lie, it was the perfect time. I really enjoyed watching the sunset transforming the white-blue skies into thick orange-yellow. It remains one of my favourite sunset views.

I recommend going there earlier in the day or morning, that way maybe there will not be a lot of people.

Weekends too are not the best times because there wil be many people.

The small place has a lot of picture zones beside the roses, where smiles and laughter is all you will hear as people pose.

This little hidden gem is far from the main city, so expect to spend at least an hour on the way. You can board a jepney and then a tryclce or hire a Grab taxi. Either way, the photos were worthy.

How much is the entrance fee

Since there are some people who want to just relax beside the sea and not buy from the café, the place instituted an entrance fee. I paid 20 pesos after standing on a long queue in front of the main gate.

To my surprise, I noticed residents from Cordova were exempted from the fee upon showing their national identity cards.

Everyone gets a small receipt and a stamp on their wrist.

I spent two hours just relaxing and admiring nature. It was too crowded to join the line for a drink.

Checkout their Facebook page for more details.

Take a historic walk to the lapu-lapu city, Mactan Shrine

The famous Shrine can be misconstrued for a holy avenue, at least that’s what l thought when l heard it was a tourist area.

Before l cancelled it on my list, l decided to read more. Reading in detail, l learned this place is a historic-treasured site. Filipinos honor one of their fighters Lapu Lapu who succeeded to fight the Spanish invaders. On the 27 of April in 1521, Chief Lapu-Lapu fatally wounded Ferdinand Magellan.

In remembrance and memorial, there is a huge stone plint at the open area bearing the date that Magellan died. This Spaniard’s defeat resulted in the victory of the Philippines, reasons why the whole city is named after Lapu Lapu.

Also, there is a gigantic steel sculpture made of him holding a large sword and a shield.  Its golden paint is appealing meters away.

Those national monuments are constructed in commemoration of the 500 anniversary of the Mactan Battle. Just so you don’t over expect, this is simple an open area beside the beach with a large cemented ground area. No one can resist not taking pictures with Lapu Lapu after hearing about his bravery.

    Lapu lapu city mactan shrine

Another section beside the monuments has bathrooms and an open gallery. There are paintings simulating the war on a large wall.

Besides hearing about Lapu Lapu and the history of Cebu from a commercial boat rider and some friendly Filipinos, l was happy to go shopping at the back part of the gate area.

There’s a line of small shops almost 10 in number selling unique Filipinos arts spanning from designed bags, slippers, clothes and a lot of jewellery. In my confusion, l settled for a medium size bag and a comfortable pair of slippers.

Go shopping at the Lapu-Lapu city Opon market

If you are a picky eater like me, you might have to go to this market. I went there almost every two days. It isn’t very big, but it has all the necessities you will need to cook a simple pot of food. I typically bought fresh fish, pork, beef, vegetables and spices. The eggs were relatively cheaper there than at the neighborhood shops.

If you love fruits, you will see a variety here too. I bought a lot of fresh fruits there. For example, I was so surprised to see some of the biggest guavas l have ever seen in my life. Given they are my favourite, l hastily bought a few. Unfortunately, they didn’t taste as sweet as l expected, but my hunger urge was satisfied.

The red and green seedless grapes weren’t very sweet either, but l liked the watermelon. You will probably like the mangoes or the tapioca (mango juice) sold around the streets.

People and food items at Lapu lapu city Opon market

There were a few sections for clothes, shoes and household basics. UNITOP is a large nationwide supermarket where electronics and household things are sold. Beside the main road, a large area was dedicated for BBQ. I saw chicken most of the time l passed there, but l guess there were other things like intestines also grilled.

Try a Filipino food at a local restuarant

My attempt to try local Filipino food left me with many thoughts. During one of my random walks, I stopped by at Von’s Grill. The tiny restaurant had only three tables and seemed to offer a variety. Sadly, the chief cook wasn’t available. The attendant suggested Filipinos pasta and beef with vegetables. I was too hungry to deny.

First, the food portion was reasonable, but the taste was an issue. It was too salty. I cannot confirm if that’s how it’s typically done, or it’s the mistake of the interim chef. Either way, I filled my belly as much as I could handle, sipping water along the bites.

Maybe because I don’t like unfamiliar food, but I recommend trying any Filipino meal or street snack.

    Do you like fast food?

On another lazy day, I did a random search of McDonalds. With a 20-25mins walk, I was at their small branch. I cannot elaborate the menu on this post, but I think it’s the same as those in other countries.

I am not a fast food fanatic, but I enjoyed the spices used in the chicken. The portions too were reasonable. I felt satisfied for all the three different times I popped there.

Jollibee will be a new name to a non-fast food eater, at least it was for me. I saw many of their branches littered on almost every street corner.

After stopping by a few times to satisfy my grumbling intestinal worms, I noticed it was a fast-growing international food chain that had been for 25 years. Their signature ice tea seems to be what separates them from other fast foods. At least that was my observation. They sold ice creams instead of soft juices. Their burgers were smaller in sizes, but the meat filling was delicious.

I dared their spaghetti and sausage tomato sauce and could say, it was average. I must remark that, their prices were relatively cheap, no wonder their shops were crowded too.

Places to eat in Lapu lapu city

The tiny Mom’s Pizza shop beside Saekyoung condominium has delicious pizzas too. On the day I arrived, tired and hungry, I felt calm after swallowing several bites of cheese pizza made within a couple of minutes. Their memory flashcards were a unique form of decoration. I recommend grabbing a bite here.

Since I cooked most of the time, my list is short for food. Once, I was too lazy and tired after work to even go outside. I ordered via the Grab app and had McDonald deliver with 20 mins. The taste was awesome, but I had to pay extra for the biker.

Where to stay in Lapu-lapu city

Many well furnished flats in the Philippines were pricey.

I used Airbnb for my search and could affirm l wasn’t disappointed. The studio room at Saekyung Condominum has a fridge, microwave, electric cooker and all basic kitchen utensils. There’s a big queen size bed with a comfortable mattress. If you choose to relax on the comfy sofa and watch Netflix, you will still be satisfied. Whether with the air conditioner or enjoying the fresh sea breeze from the balcony in the mornings and evenings, there seemed to be enough air coming into the house.

The spice of my trip was the big pool in the yard. It was great to unwind and remove the sweat from the scorching sun in the warm pool water.

However, I contracted pool sinuses after my third swim, but l think it was because of the chlorine. Maybe my skin was sensitive, but l assure you it was fun swimming there.  People are always there except on Mondays to balance the heat of the sunny weather.

    Saekyung condominium

Why should you stay at Saekyung Condominium

The advantage of this place is that  it’s barely 20 mins away from the main Cebu province airport.

This place is located in Lapu- Lapu city, some 30–45  mins away from the famous Cebu City.

In my ignorance, l thought Cebu City was the only city on the island. Very shortly after my arrival, l learned that Cebu is a province full of many islands. With simple prior geography search and reading, l should’ve known. It was too late to change the island. There aren’t a lot of touristy things to do in Lapu Lapu, so plan accordingly.

Cebu City on the other hand has a lot of attractions and l would’ve loved to stay there.

After regretting, I later figured how to go there. ?first, l walked almost 20 mins to the bus terminal where l boarded a bus to Cebu island. It took 45 mins sometimes due to traffic. Other times, l walked some 15 mins to the ferry terminal and took a ferry which lasted 20 mins. The ferry was faster, but you need to take a taxi or jeepney from the port to move around the city because it’s slightly far away from the heart of the city.

    A day in Santosa, Singapore

Santosa is a small island city owned by the big Singapore island. It left me in awe. I knew for my 3 weeks visit around Singapore that they had invested a lot in developing the tiny island but l wasn’t sure how much they had done for Santosa. Sincerely, I can attest, l was impressed beyond words.

I was delighted that l went there. Singapore is a rich country and the government has endeavored to make entertainment accessible to everyone, tourists inclusive. Some places require an entrance fee. Given l was on a budget, l visited only free places. Here’s a list of things I did on my whole day touring around the island.

How can you go to Santosa?

I began my trip from the Harbourfront subway station where l bought a 4 dollar ticket to board the monorail. A monorail is a sky train which is small- two cabins. My first surprise was that, the trains were colorful. Infact from the decorations at the ticketing office, even a blind man can feel the colors. I saw hot red, bright green and yellow monorails moving up and down the main island to Santosa island. If you love exercising, you can also take a long walk on the broadwalk on the main road to Santosa.

Some people rent bikes or skate from mainland there. The most convenient is to drive your car but if you are up for a luxurious ride, you can use the cable cars. The singapore cable car sky network is operational from 8:45-10pm. With $35 for adults and $25 for children anyone can go to Santosa from the Harbourfront subway station. Just like anyplace, a taxi ride is also possible and you can use bus 123 from Bukit Merah station.

    transport means to santosa

    How to have fun

The government has been considerate to make special passes which can allow guests to visit many places at a discount rate. They are referred to as “Token”. You can buy it for either 60, 90 or 120 Singapore dollars and enjoy a variety of activities.

I regret that l planned only a day- the eve of my return to visit Santosa. There were too many activities to do there. This blog will be based solely on the things l did. I will leave a link below for other activities but l think l can better speak of my experience. Also, many activities are paid but l was able to spend the whole doing doing free stuff. I recommend allocating at least 3 days to explore the entire island. If possible, lodge at any of the hotels there to ease your movement around.

What can you do in Santosa?

1.Explore movie life at Universal Studios Singapore

This is the first stop of the train. This large area is made of gigantic buildings crowded with tourists and Singaporeans. If you want to visit the main studios then you need to buy a ticket. There are ticketing machines in front of the main gate costing 90SD. One man l spoke to told me it was 80SD if I bought online from their website. The area is parked with Disney world characters and scenes of movies. This is a must see for movie lovers. I think the movies will come to live after this experience. I went there at 5:55pm barely minutes  to the closing hour so I couldn’t go inside.

Universal Studios opens at 9am – 6pm. I didn’t regret the time because l was able to take lots of pictures at the large Lego shop and tha massive signature rolling globe ball symbol of the Universal Studios. Lined up on the same area is a bunnyverse- an area with cute bunny statutes all wearing dark glasses and seating around.

    Universal studios in Santosa

I was equally intrigued to see a whole wall decorated with the famous paintings of Vincent Van Gogh in large sizes. The entire area is littered with several cafes- Starbucks, food trucks and ice cream places. Words will fail me to describe the grandeur and beauty of this area.

To experience this, you need to alight at the first stop of the monorail in Sentosa called “Resort World Station”. I guess there are some hotels around too.

    2. Take an Santosa island bus tour

The small island has tarred roads leading to all the edges. The big streets still covered with vegetation in some places are clean and organized with bus stops. My greatest shock was to hear, l could board a bus for free, sit down and just enjoy the entire island. When l heard that, l happily boarded with my new Japanese tourist friend, Chiba. We spent almost 20 mins admiring the beauty of the place as the bus made stops at various stations.

Whether it was the large Santosa golf club or the W hotel, l was surprised at the high standard buildings and quality of life there. You can choose to board either Bus A, B or C. They all came to the bus station after every 15 mins and they went to different directions. My friend and l used only Bus B and it’s because we were unaware there were others.

    Santosa bus tour

Similarly, at the beach, you can take a walk on the brownish sand or hop in on the beach shuttle for free. It also comes every 15 minutes and could be crowded especially on weekends.

    3. Shop for perfumes at Scentopia shop

If you love fragrant smells like me, this small shop should be on your list when you go to Santosa. I was initially interested in just seeing how it was inside the shop but after l smelled several paper pallets of different sprays hanging on a tree outside, I spontaneously decided to buy.  As soon as the door opened, my nose was hit with a myriad of fragrances, l couldn’t resist a smile. The shop workers do a good job at confusing you by giving you tasters on papers. I inhaled some many perfumes and decided to buy one.

I was surprised to hear there was a take-home perfume making kit. Equally, if you are interested, you can sit in one section inside the shop and make your own perfume. That is, they provide you with the items and you can mix to form your own unique scent. Chiba and l didn’t plan to spend much time there so we admired it from a distance for a few minutes.

    Sarah at scentopiashop

I guarantee you will be tempted to take pictures sitting on the beach in front of  the shop pretending to be the body of a big beautiful butterfly. I did that with a smile.

    5. Swim at Siloso beach

Every edge of the island is a beach, and the famous Siloso was in my list. Though l didn’t come with swim suit for a dive, l was okay dipping my legs into the warm sea water as l walked through the sand.

Given how hot Santosa can be in the afternoons, l suggest you move with an umbrella and grab ice cream from any shop to stabilize the body heat.  Chiba and l had so much fun taking pictures on the beach signs and feeling jealous to see others enjoying water games.

    Siloso beach

    6. Stroll at the Santosa Palawan Green  beach

This section of the island was really my favorite. I wasn’t just envious of people swimming and jumping on water tubes in the ocean but l was smiling as I heard the loud screams of children enjoying at the pools on the adventure waterparks all beside the beach. There was a lot to do. As l thronged my way on the sun scorched brown sand, l was surprised to see large adult swings open for anyone to relax. As you may guess, Chiba and I quickly took a break swinging up and down while l sang and made jokes.

I must remark that, the island has tarred walk paths with roofs. There were hidden speakers  in the herbs around street lights playing  constant light hearted music. I didn’t know the songs but l was smiling and dancing as l walked through causing Chiba to laugh in surprise. At several corners beside the main road, there are statutes of sea animals like a turtle, snail, octopus, just to name a few. Equally, there were wooden statutes offering a perfect spot for pictures.

Sarah and friend at Santosa Palawan beach

I was most surprised to see a sunscreen dispensing kiosk. There was no one standing standing beside or a payment option which means, it was free for anyone. I have never seen this before. Apparently, you don’t have to worry if you forgot yours or didn’t have.

On one area also, l saw a huge canopy pitched for everyone to take a rest after enjoying the water. This is uncommon in many beaches l have been to.

    7. Visit the southernmost point of Asia

This area is located on a very small island beside Santosa. You will have to walk across the ocean on a tiny canopy shaky bridge. The threads are secured and safe but l was scared when l took my first few steps. Geographers have confirmed this island is the most southern point of the continent of Asia.

Therefore, Singapore is making it a place worth visiting. Unfortunately, some parts are still under construction. They are building 2 wooden open house like structures there. For now, it was only possible to walk the stairs to the top and take beautiful pictured of the ocean and the front beach area. I really liked the sea breeze from that top part.

Your tour here will be incomplete if you don’t take a picture at the large stone Santosa monument. The government has done a great job of piling a lot of concrete and stones at the edges of the ocean to protect marine life. I liked the fact that there were still trees littered around the place. It was a perfect stop for Chiba and l to sit, sip some water, check the free paper map and plan our next move.

Sarah and friend at the southern most point of Asia

Finally, if you still have time, you can stop at the Central  beach bazaar for a bite or many of the restaurants littered around the island. Food shops were fired everywhere. I think hotels also have restaurants. We didn’t have time to eat as we needed to go back to the main island but we left satisfied. I will visit more places if l ever go to Santosa again.

Check out this link to see more detail things to do in the island.

    Winners Chapel: Cameroon Church review

The Living Faith Church Worldwide, often referred to as Winners Chapel, has experienced significant and rapid growth since its establishment in 1981.

The rapidly expanding ministry, known as Winners Chapel, was founded by Bishop David Oyedepo, who also serves as its President. Inspired by a divine vision and a deep love for all, he established Winners Chapel as a means to share the message of God’s love.

With a presence in over 21,000 churches across Nigeria and thousands more worldwide, Bishop Oyedepo has remained dedicated to spreading the teachings of Christ.

While the ministry’s headquarters are located in Nigeria, often referred to as Canaan land, Bishop Oyedepo organizes annual events like Shiloh, where congregants come together both physically and online for a week-long retreat.

In addition to being a prolific author of numerous books, Bishop Oyedepo is passionate about reshaping education. Consequently, he has overseen the establishment and management of several primary and secondary schools, along with two prominent universities, namely Landmark and Covenant University.

    My experience at Winners Chapel

For many years prior to my journey abroad, Winners Chapel was my spiritual home. Words can hardly convey the immense joy I felt worshipping with fellow believers during the Wednesday evening or Sunday morning services.

Winners Chapel stands out with its unique and well-organized structure of services.

Each gathering had a strict two-hour time frame, with all activities meticulously scheduled. I particularly appreciated this predictability, as it allowed me to gauge the flow of the service, even on the rare occasions when I was running late (which was infrequent).

Typically, the service commences with a concise prayer session, followed by an exuberant 15-minute praise and worship session. It is customary for congregants to leave their seats, dancing in the open spaces with wide smiles and hearts full of gratitude.

Why did I like the testimony segment?

Shortly after, there is a brief testimony segment where, depending on the number of participants, 6–10 individuals would succinctly share their testimonies with the entire congregation.

These testimonies are not only welcomed but encouraged, and people eagerly share their stories almost every service day. I was consistently captivated by the miraculous experiences shared, and it served as a powerful reminder to trust God even more.

These sessions significantly contributed to the growth of my faith, and it was incredibly meaningful to witness someone narrating their journey as a testament to God’s glory.

Following the church announcements, the Resident Pastors of each branch would deliver sermons lasting between 45 minutes to an hour. Their teachings are aligned with the mandate from Bishop Oyedepo.

Except during special programs that featured live streams from the main church in Nigeria, the individual branches were expected to function independently.

Winners Chapel exhibits remarkable structural organization, and I deeply appreciated the sense of order. The ministry has designated elders responsible for marriage counselling to support couples, and the children’s ministry is considered a vital component of the congregation.

Although I couldn’t attend the early morning 1-hour prayer sessions at the church, I was always impressed that there was an opportunity for believers to commence their day in fellowship and communal prayer.

    Winners Chapel cell groups

Another remarkable facet of being a member of this church was the emphasis on communal living. Congregants are encouraged to join small groups comprised of fellow church members residing in the same neighbourhood.

These groups met regularly to share the word of God and engage in prayer. It also served as an avenue to invite neighbours into the fold, introducing them to the message of Christ and eventually bringing them to church.

Another consistent and impactful activity organized by Winners Chapel was the Saturday “all-out” evangelism effort. Members would assemble at the church premises in the morning, where they received fliers detailing the church’s activities.

Armed with these materials, they ventured out into the community, approaching strangers, engaging them in conversations, and extending invitations through the fliers.

This grassroots approach of reaching out to people in their homes is a sign of love. Talking to people at their places of business proved to be an effective strategy for church growth. Many individuals have been introduced to the gospel through these interactions, resulting in numerous conversions and an expanded congregation.

How was l involved in Winners Chapel?

I had a strong belief in serving at the church, so I joyfully dedicated my time to the choir. Every Tuesday and Saturday, I would eagerly make my way to the church for choir rehearsals. During these sessions, we typically had to learn three or more songs, following short voice training exercises.

On Wednesdays, Sundays, and special Thursday and Friday events, the choir was responsible for leading the praise. At these worship sessions, the choir performs a special song. I cherished every moment of these sessions, especially the dance performances.

Our repertoire was diverse, encompassing songs in various languages, including French, English, and Pidgin. Sometimes, we delved into traditional music, singing songs from Cameroonian groups and donning cultural attire.

On other occasions, we explored gospel songs from Nigeria, South Africa, Congo (in Lingala), and various African regions. American music was also in the mix. Our weekly performances were marked by this rich diversity, which I thoroughly appreciated.

Christian Life Assembly: Rwanda Church Review

Nestled along one of Rwanda’s many steep hills, you’ll discover a modest-sized church building. The Christian Life Assembly, though discreetly positioned, accommodates hundreds of devoted congregants every Sunday.

My memories of a visit in 2022 remain vivid; I witnessed a bustling throng of individuals hastening to engage in the services.

Opting for the midday session till 1-30 pm, I was struck by the sense of fervor that permeated the atmosphere.

If you are an early riser then the first service at 8am – 9.30am or the second service at 10am – 11.30am will be the perfect match.

What is the mission of Christian Life Assembly

Christian Life Assembly (CLA) is more than just a church; it’s a dynamic and transformative community centered around the unshakable foundation of the Bible and the life-changing potential of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

Rooted in the belief that faith is a living force that can empower and reshape lives, CLA invites you to be a part of this extraordinary journey.

At the heart of CLA’s spiritual philosophy is its cell-based structure, designed to foster genuine connections and meaningful relationships.

These smaller groups, or cells, provide a nurturing environment where individuals can engage in open discussions, share their spiritual insights, and support one another on their faith journey.

Through these interactions, faith comes alive, and transformation becomes a shared experience.

Small group fellowships (Cells) happen every Wednesday in designated homes across the city. See the Cell section for a cell near you.

How did I know about Christian Life Assembly?

An invitation from a Rwandese friend led me to this place of worship, a proposition I embraced wholeheartedly.

Accompanied by her, I was glad to meet fellow believers.

Upon entering, ushers greeted us with warmth, allowing us to select our seats toward the back.

The wooden benches followed a gentle curve, ensuring everyone had a clear view of the pulpit.

While adorned with subtle embellishments, the auditorium stood distinguished by its three main, sizable doors through which a stream of worshipers entered.

    How are the services organized?

Similar to many spiritual gatherings, the service initiated with a brief prayer and a spirited session of praise. The resonant melodies of renowned songs by Hillsong United and other contemporary gospel pieces enveloped me in a profound sense of reverence.

After the harmony of four songs, we settled into our seats, the room buzzing with anticipation.

Amid the announcements, an invigorating sermon from the Pastor took center stage.

I vividly recall his adept weaving of various Bible verses, deftly intertwining the text with personal anecdotes.

One Sunday, marked as June 19, 2022, held a distinctive place in my heart as it was a celebration of Father’s Day.

Through relatable examples, the Pastor expounded on the significance of paternal roles, skillfully connecting them to God.

“God created to be is rooted in familial relationships. By faith and acceptance of our adoption into God’s family through the redemptive sacrifice of Jesus, we become an inseparable part of Him”, the Pastor added.

What happened after the first visit?

As the service concluded, my curiosity led me to join other newcomers in the church’s rear office as announced earlier.

They warmly welcomed by fellow church members. After basic introductions, they told us about the church’s cell group structure.

While I, unfortunately, couldn’t partake due to my tourist status, I found solace in knowing such a supportive community existed.

Departing the brief meeting with a smile, I sipped on a complimentary small bottle of Fanta.

If you’re seeking a spiritual community that embraces the transformative potential of faith, Christian Life Assembly welcomes you with open arms.

Whether you’re looking to deepen your understanding of the Bible, or foster genuine connections. You can embark on a journey of personal growth. CLA invites you to join this vibrant community where faith comes to life, and lives are forever changed.

Whether you’re a visitor to Kigali or a newcomer to Rwanda, I wholeheartedly endorse Christian Life Assembly as a haven for fellowship. My experience there was enriching, and should I ever return to the city, I wouldn’t hesitate to grace its doors once again.

Football in Cameroon: A Passionate Journey of Talent and Triumph

Football, often referred to as “the beautiful game,” holds a special place in the hearts of Cameroonians. From the grassroots level to the professional leagues, football in Cameroon is more than just a sport—it’s a way of life, a source of unity, and a symbol of national pride.

This Central African nation is renowned for its rich football history, producing remarkable talents that have made a significant impact on the global stage.

If you are ever in Cameroon, ask around to watch a match. Almost every neighbourhood has several fields where people gather every evening, especially weekends, to watch and play matches.

    How is football in Cameroon?

I would call myself a football lover, though I might not watch all local matches around the city. I enjoy dressing for every match if I have the opportunity to go to the stadium.

    Cameroon attire
Me wearing the typical Cameroon football fan attire

Football fan attire varies widely based on the team, the culture of the fanbase, the location, and the specific event or match being attended. However, there are some common elements and trends that are often associated with football fan attire. Here’s a description of typical football fan attire in Cameroon:

Team Jerseys: One of the most iconic pieces of football fan attire is the team jersey. Cameroonian fans proudly wear the official jerseys, featuring national flag’s colors, national animal (Lion), and sometimes the names and numbers of popular players. These jerseys come in various styles, from the traditional home kits to away and alternate designs.

Hats and Caps: Cameroonian fans typically wear hats or caps adorned with the national logo or colors. These headwear items offer both sun protection and a way to show team loyalty.

How do fanatics dress to go watch a match?

Face Paint and Body Art: For the most enthusiastic fans, face paint, temporary tattoos, and body art are a fun way to display team spirit. Many fanatics paint their faces in team colors, create designs, or even replicate the national emblem. Some ladies go to extreme sometimes to braid their hair with three different extensions (green, red and yellow)as in the national flag. Football fanaticism is almost like a mini-god in Cameroon for many people.

Flags and Banners: It is very common for a football fan to carry flags or banners with team emblems, slogans, or messages of support. These items are often waved in the stands during matches, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.

In other cases, some people who don’t want to look excessive wear accessories like wristbands, lanyards, and keychains also feature team logos and colors. This is a whole business during regional or global competitions.

The easiest way to know there is a match on any day is if you see many people around the streets wearing either the jersey or all of the mentioned items.

Many Cameroonians claim wearing the above listed items adds luck to the team’s victory.

Historical perspective of football in Cameroon

Football was introduced to Cameroon during the colonial era, and it quickly captured the imagination of the local population. Over the years, the sport has grown exponentially, with young Cameroonians showcasing their skills in streets, schools, and local clubs.

The Cameroon Football Federation (FECAFOOT) has played a crucial role in fostering the development of football across the country, providing infrastructure, training, and support to aspiring players. Currently headed by Cameroon’s best and one of the most famous African player, Samuel Eto’o Fils, the future of the country’s football status is brighter than ever.

    What are the national achievements?

Cameroon’s national football team, affectionately known as the “Indomitable Lions,” has achieved remarkable success on the international stage.

The pinnacle of their achievements came in 1990 when they reached the quarter-finals of the FIFA World Cup, leaving an indelible mark on the tournament’s history.

The team’s combination of talent, determination, and unique playing style earned them respect and admiration worldwide.

Additionally, Cameroon has won the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) multiple times, solidifying its reputation as a football powerhouse on the continent. The victories in 1984, 1988, 2000, and 2017 showcased the nation’s commitment to excellence, and the players who contributed to these triumphs have become legends in their own right.

    Local Leagues and Development

Cameroon boasts a robust domestic football league system, with the Elite One and Elite Two leagues being the top tiers of competition. These leagues provide a platform for talented young players to showcase their skills, with clubs like Coton Sport, Union Douala, and Canon Yaoundé maintaining a strong presence.

Grassroots development is a fundamental aspect of football in Cameroon. Youth academies and programs run by both clubs and non-profit organizations focus on nurturing young talents, providing them with quality coaching, and instilling essential life skills.

The development of these young players ensures a bright future for the sport in the country.

What is the footbal ambiance before and during a match at the stadium?

The atmosphere at a Cameroon football stadium during a national team match is truly electric and vibrant, embodying the pride, passion, and intense emotions of the fans. From the sea of colors in the seating arrangement to the enthusiastic chants and witty banter, the experience is a unique and unforgettable celebration of the beautiful game.

National Pride and Unity: The fact that the stadium’s seating arrangement reflects the national flag is a powerful symbol of unity and national pride. It’s a visual representation of the collective identity shared by Cameroonians, and it highlights the importance of the national team as a unifying force for the country.

Maximum Capacity: The dedication of Cameroonians to their national team is evident in the way they fill the stadium to its maximum capacity. This unwavering support showcases the deep connection between the team and its fans, creating an atmosphere that is both thrilling and inspiring. I always love to be one of those people at the stadium when I can.

Mixed Emotions: The passionate fan reactions during the football match, from laughter to tension-filled insults, create a dynamic and colorful backdrop. The rollercoaster of emotions experienced by the fans demonstrates their investment in the game and their desire to see their team succeed.

What to expect at a stadium

Positive Vibes: Despite the tension and competitive spirit, it’s heartening to see that the majority of fans maintain a positive outlook throughout the match. Their unwavering support and the continuous stream of jokes and slangs, both positive and negative, contribute to an energetic and lively environment, making the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.

Exuberant Atmosphere: The sounds of whistles, trumpets, and loud screams are all part of the passionate soundtrack that accompanies every pass of the ball. While the noise can be deafening, it adds to the exuberant ambiance of the stadium, creating an intense atmosphere that resonates with the players on the field.

Shared Experience: The camaraderie among fans, the shared moments of excitement and disappointment, and the unity forged in supporting the national team make the stadium a place where people come together as one, transcending differences and celebrating their shared love for the sport.

How is the women’s football in Cameroon?

Women’s football in Cameroon has also experienced significant growth and recognition.

The national women’s team, known as the “Indomitable Lionesses,” has made waves in international competitions, with a strong presence in the Africa Women Cup of Nations (AWCON) and the FIFA Women’s World Cup.

The success of the Lionesses has inspired young girls across the nation to pursue football, leading to a surge in women’s participation in the sport at various levels.

What are the challenges and the path forward

While football in Cameroon has achieved remarkable milestones, it also faces challenges that need to be addressed.

These challenges include improving infrastructure, promoting grassroots development, enhancing coaching standards, and ensuring the sustainable growth of the sport.

By investing in these areas and fostering collaboration between government institutions, football authorities, and private organizations, Cameroon can continue to nurture its footballing talent and maintain its status as a football powerhouse.

    Conclusion

Football is more than just a game in Cameroon; it’s a reflection of the nation’s spirit, diversity, and determination.

From the passionate fans cheering in the stadiums to the aspiring young talents dreaming of representing their country, football has woven itself into the fabric of Cameroonian society.
