List Of Things To Do In Thailand

Thailand holds the distinction of being Southeast Asia’s top tourist destination, a title well-deserved. With its captivating blend of natural wonders, rich cultural heritage, top-notch tourism infrastructure, and seamless travel options, it’s a unanimous choice for travelers. My personal visit to Bangkok and Pattaya only affirmed this remarkable reputation.

In this captivating Asian gem, the array of attractions to discover in a week is abundant. The captivating cultural adornments along the roads left me utterly amazed. The majority of streets are well-paved, ensuring comfortable and seamless exploration.

With joy, I embraced the use of motorbikes, feeling secure as the rider provided a helmet. Opting for motorbikes proved cost-effective compared to taxis. Metered taxis and Uber offered on-demand transportation, while trains were readily accessible throughout Bangkok, with easy-to-purchase train cards at stations.

Yet, my preferred mode was evening strolls, savoring the city’s streets and adjacent parks. The pleasant weather added to my delight.

    Visit the Thailand Aquarium

With its abundant water surroundings, encountering an artificial aquarium in Thailand felt natural. The SEA LIFE Bangkok Ocean World emerged as a delightful oasis to marvel at the wonders of the sea. A space where both youngsters and grown-ups could indulge in the joy of observing aquatic beauty.

A world of wonders unfolded before my eyes. I encountered the Seahorse Kingdom, vibrant coral reefs, thrilling shark walks, the enigmatic rocky hideout, and the captivating Shark Shipwreck. Jellies danced in ethereal beauty, while an ocean tunnel immersed me in a different realm.

Every detail was remarkably lifelike. The expansive aquarium showcased a myriad of marine species, accompanied by 4-D films and immersive underwater experiences. At the exit, a sea life shop showcased enchanting displays and souvenirs. Wallets resembled dolphins, shark pencils abounded, and creative mementos beckoned.

    Market Tour

Nestled on Kamphaeng Phet 2 Road in Bangkok, the Chatuchak Weekend Market reigns as Thailand’s largest. Despite a short train journey, the experience was richly rewarding. Markets encapsulate the authentic local life, and as I wandered through, a vivid tapestry of Thai culture unfolded before me. Insights into their cuisine, clothing, and way of life became tangible.

Joy radiated from every corner, unsurprisingly. Conversations flowed, locals mingled, and foreigners like me were embraced with warmth. Language barriers proved a challenge, yet some attempted discussions, bridging the gap.

Though I couldn’t explore the entire expanse, touching upon the market was a treat. A pair of exquisite pants became my souvenir, a testament to the vibrant and affordable array of clothing—brimming with colors and priced more reasonably than in South Korea.

Tucked at the market’s edge, a leather crafts enclave beckoned. Here, desires transformed into tangible creations before your eyes. Unsure of a suitable keepsake, they presented a catalog brimming with possibilities. My choice? A passport cover.

In about half an hour, I witnessed the magic unfold. My name elegantly etched on a supple leather piece, an emblem meticulously added, and sections carved out for cards. The surprise? My role was choosing the leather hue—everything else was handled expertly.

Nearly five years on, that cover remains untouched by time. Skepticism about leather quality lingered, but their promise of authenticity rang true. Amid the myriad temptations to splurge, I resisted the allure, holding onto my cherished creation.

    Shop at shopping Malls

Evening shopping in Bangkok is a soothing experience, a tranquil delight. While not compelled to shop for clothes or shoes, my curiosity piqued about mall offerings. The colossal Siam Paragon mall beckoned, and I was thrilled to explore its grandeur.

At every turn, shops adorned each floor, showcasing a plethora of items. The range was astonishing, from household essentials to budget-friendly delights. Each floor held a distinct identity, be it babies, electronics, or books.

Scaling the escalators, the sheer scale left me unsurprised that Siam Paragon ranks among Thailand’s largest and busiest malls. A realm of endless possibilities awaited with every step.

Linked to the BTS Skytrain station line, Siam Center emerges as a bustling hub for shoppers seeking various wares.

Within its vibrant array, traditional Thai costumes caught my eye, adorned with deity narratives. This revelation didn’t shock me, given Thailand’s deep-rooted religiosity. Their devotion to gods and reverence for ancestral legacy stood unparalleled. Kings held an exalted place in their hearts, intertwining history and esteem seamlessly.

    Pattaya city

Concluding my journey, I adhered to my tradition of exploring other cities. A swift 2-hour bus ride transported me to Pattaya, another gem awaiting discovery. This coastal haven teemed with tourists, famed for its vibrant nightclubs, captivating cabarets, and expansive beachfront bars. Foreign faces dotted the streets and shoreline, a testament to Pattaya’s global allure.

First-class restaurants and lush gardens graced the landscape, and dusk brought a serene shoreline stroll, accompanied by the soothing sea breeze.

Thailand’s offerings extend far beyond, leaving you spoilt for choice. My two-week venture barely scratched the surface.

    My experience at Kingdomcity

In October 2018, as I prepared to embark on my journey to Malaysia, I sought advice from an old friend about places to fellowship. Without hesitation, my friend enthusiastically recommended Kingdomcity in Kuala Lumpur. Although I had never heard of it before, I was intrigued by my friend’s glowing testimonial. I decided to attend a service there with an open mind and heart.

From the moment I walked through the doors, I felt a sense of warmth and welcome that instantly put me at ease. The passionate worship, inspiring teachings, and genuine sense of community left a lasting impression on me.

    How was the praise time?

The vibrant praise and worship at Kingdomcity, swept me away by the infectious energy. The lively atmosphere filled my heart with immense joy, and before I knew it, I found myself dancing with delight for a few precious minutes. The songs they sang were familiar contemporary gospel tunes, and I couldn’t resist joining in with all my heart.

As the music filled the air, I felt a profound connection with the lyrics and the uplifting melodies. Singing along, I couldn’t help but hop and dance like a grasshopper, completely immersed in the spirit of praise and worship. The sheer happiness and sense of freedom were evident on my beaming face, as my smile stretched from molar to molar.

In that moment, I felt a deep yearning to be part of the praise team. If circumstances had allowed me to stay longer in Malaysia, I would have eagerly embraced the opportunity to join that talented group of worshipers. Their passion and dedication to leading others in heartfelt worship inspired me, and I longed to be part of creating such a powerful and moving experience for others.

The memory of that exhilarating praise and worship session at Kingdomcity lingers in my heart, serving as a reminder of the power of music to lift our spirits and draw us closer to God. Who founded the church?

Mark is the founder and Senior Leader of Kingdomcity – a growing, vibrant church in multiple locations around the world.

Mark, alongside his wife Jemima and a dedicated team of passionate pastors and strategic leaders, is leading the rapid expansion of Kingdomcity into a global movement. With a presence now established in Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Asia, and Australia, Kingdomcity is flourishing in many regions.

Mark’s journey into ministry commenced in 2003 when he made the courageous decision to leave behind his legal career and fully embrace the calling to serve in a local church in Perth, Australia.

    How did Kingdomcity start?

In 2005, a life-changing encounter with God during what he describes as his “burning bush” experience transformed his perspective. In response to what he believed God had revealed to him, Mark left Australia, embarking on a one-way journey to Malaysia. It was there, in April 2006, that he planted the seeds of what has now blossomed into Kingdomcity.

Mark eloquently captured his profound personal journey and the captivating Kingdomcity story in his first book titled “Ready, Fire! Aim.” This inspiring narrative beautifully weaves together themes of faith and risk. It offers readers a glimpse into the incredible transformation God can bring about in one’s life.

Beyond his captivating preaching on stage, Mark’s passion for worship extends to the piano. He collaborates closely with the worship team. His artistic talent has resulted in multiple powerful and heartfelt songs that are a God-centered expression of worship.

Mark’s visionary leadership, fueled by faith and a relentless pursuit of God’s purpose, has propelled Kingdomcity on a remarkable global journey.

    What to expect

Receiving a bag full of spiritual items, including church fliers, as a guest at Kingdomcity was an unexpected and heartwarming surprise. The special inscription “VIP – Very Important Guest” left me touched and appreciated in a way I had never imagined. It was a simple gesture, but it made me feel valued and welcomed into the Kingdomcity family.

As a tourist, I filled out the visitors form to share a bit about myself. To my surprise, they reached out to me a few times afterward. Their genuine care and encouragement to stay faithful to God touched my heart deeply. Despite being a visitor from afar, they made an effort to connect with me on a personal level. That fostered a sense of belonging that went beyond borders.

I know that if I ever find myself in a country where they have a branch, I would definitely make it a point to visit again. Their hospitality and genuine love for people shine through, making every visit a truly enriching and uplifting experience.

    My final take

Kingdomcity’s outreach to visitors like me goes beyond just attending a service. It reflects their heart to genuinely care for and nurture the spiritual journey of everyone who crosses their path. The impact of this thoughtful gesture continues to resonate with me. It reminds me of the power of simple acts of kindness in touching lives and spreading God’s love.

Camp review: which tent is the best in Serengeti?

Many camps offer delightful Eco-friendly tented havens nestled in the heart of the Central Serengeti National Park. However, Shuhudia Adventure Camp pride themselves on providing a personalized and intimate level of comfort to ensure safari experiences. My three days tent stay was unique. Here are the many reasons you should go there.

It is a place for visitors to immerse themselves in the breathtaking panoramas of the Serengeti. It is where the legendary “Great Migration” takes place, alongside a thriving abundance of wildlife. Their tented safari camp offers a harmonious blend of seclusion and remarkable game viewing opportunities, all wrapped up in an unparalleled luxury experience.

Let the allure of the Serengeti surround you as you unwind in the embrace of the extraordinary Shuhudia Adventure Camp. Experience the raw beauty of nature while relishing the elegant luxuries that make your stay with us an unforgettable memory. Welcome to your safari dream come true!

    What is outside the tent?

The tents at Shuhudia Adventure Camp are designed with thick materials, providing a cozy and private ambiance within. Although the thick walls make it impossible to see outside, fret not, as they have incorporated a net-like window that is opened every morning by their attentive staff members. This allows the gentle breeze and warm sunlight to gracefully filter into the bedroom, creating a refreshing and delightful atmosphere.

To further enhance the comfort, a camp armchair is thoughtfully placed in front of each tent, inviting guests to bask in the natural beauty that surrounds them. I didn’t have many days to sit there but we were told not to sit out there alone at night because we were in the wild. So whether you wish to immerse yourself in a captivating book, embrace the tranquility of the Serengeti, or simply revel in the serene surroundings, the camp armchair provides the perfect spot to do so.

    Front view of my tent

Indeed, each tent at Shuhudia Adventure Camp is uniquely distinguished by a signboard and a specific name, ensuring easy identification and adding a touch of personalization to your stay. Despite the tents’ dark forest green color, the clear signage and individual names make it convenient to locate your designated home-away-from-home amidst the picturesque surroundings. My tent was Nyasa, the first one behind the grassy parking lot.

As for the tent entry, the front door features a large zipper for convenient access. While this design allows for easy entry and exit, it aids privacy and security.

How does the tent look inside?

    Inside

As soon as I stepped into my tent, I was captivated by the enchanting African decor and style, thoughtfully designed to provide guests with a sanctuary of utmost comfort and tranquility. I like those zebra designs.

There were many tents, those vailable in singles, twins, and doubles. Each featuring inviting furniture, a private terrace, and a well-appointed en-suite bathroom. I stayed in a big tent for doubles because my cousin booked it that way.

    My funny experience

On the first night of my stay at Shuhudia Adventure Camp, an unexpected encounter with what sounded like an elephant left me in a state of terror. The unsettling shaking of buckets at the back of my tent sent shivers down my spine. Frantically, I attempted to call the camp staff using the provided walkie-talkie phone, seeking reassurance and assistance. However, there was no immediate response, and my fear intensified.

Thankfully, the restaurant’s proximity allowed me to access the internet in my tent, and I quickly connected with my sister via WhatsApp. Our lengthy conversation brought a sense of comfort and distraction, helping to pass the restless hours as I grappled with the nerves and unease caused by the encounter.

Though I struggled to find sleep that night, I finally managed to calm my anxious mind by softly talking to myself and rationalizing that it was a natural occurrence in the wild. While it was a terrifying experience at the time, it soon became a humorous anecdote that we shared the following day. I discovered that such encounters with animals were relatively common during the night hours, adding a touch of adventure and excitement to the overall experience.

Now, looking back, I can’t help but laugh at my initial reaction, realizing that it was all part of the extraordinary wilderness encounter that Shuhudia Adventure Camp had to offer. It’s these unforgettable moments, even if daunting at the time, that make each safari adventure truly unique and cherished in our memories. The tent was thick so nothing could happen but I was still scared.

What is in the public toilet and inside bathroom/toilet?

Upon our arrival at night, the chilly air embraced us, and I anticipated a rather cold start to my stay. However, my surprise knew no bounds when the attentive staff at Shuhudia Adventure Camp promptly provided hot water for my tent’s bathroom. I was left in awe, wondering how this magical feat was accomplished. To this day, the mystery lingers, as I never laid eyes on a hot water tank or any traditional heating system.

Little did I know that the camp’s technology held a secret: a remarkable system that ensures warm water flows effortlessly into the bathroom each evening within a matter of minutes. It was a marvel to experience such thoughtful and advanced amenities that seamlessly blend comfort and convenience.

The warmth that enveloped me, both physically and metaphorically, during my stay at Shuhudia Adventure Camp is a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of the staff. Their commitment to providing an extraordinary and unforgettable experience leaves a lasting impression, making each moment cherished and treasured.

As I reminisce about my time at the camp, the memories of that pleasantly warm bathroom and the hospitality of the staff fill my heart with gratitude. It’s the little details and thoughtful touches that make Shuhudia Adventure Camp an exceptional destination, one where comfort, technology, and nature harmoniously come together to create a truly extraordinary stay.

    tent toilet
    tent restroom

There bathroom is equipped with a wardrobe, a safari bucket shower, a hand wash basin, and a flush toilet. It really ensured my utmost convenience and relaxation. I heard they could arrange triple tents for special requests.

At the main entrance of the entire camp, there is also a public toilet. It has everything you will expect to see in a normal toilet, except it is a tent.

    How was the tent restaurant?

The restaurant at Shuhudia Adventure Camp was a grand sight to behold, boasting the largest tent on the premises. Its elongated structure included a charming terrace section. The terrace has cozy armchairs, creating a perfect spot for guests to unwind and relax. I cherished spending my evenings there, finding solace in the tranquility while indulging in writing. However, as dusk approached, the allure of wild animals in the vicinity made it necessary to go inside for safety.

The safety of the guests was a top priority. All the staff took every precaution to ensure our well-being. They remained vigilant and present at all times. At night, they used special flashlights to assist guests who needed to return to their rooms after nightfall. Their knowledge of wildlife and quick response skills added an extra layer of reassurance. That gave us a sense of security without being intrusive.

The restaurant’s buffet offerings for both breakfast and dinner were an absolute delight. It cateried to a variety of healthy and delectable choices. Each meal was a culinary delight, leaving me thoroughly satisfied with an array of scrumptious dishes to relish. Even after dinner, the ambiance enticed guests to linger, fostering a warm atmosphere that encouraged chitchat and camaraderie among everyone present. Our tour guide became a delightful companion as we engaged in games and shared captivating stories.

Once again, the whimsical zebra decorations adorned the restaurant. It infused the space with a vibrant energy and a touch of African charm. It was indeed the heart of the camp, a place where delightful moments were shared, laughter echoed, and unforgettable memories were etched into our hearts.

    Watoto church:Uganda Church Review

During my 1-month and 2-week visit to Watoto Church, I had the privilege of experiencing God in a whole new light.

The church is guided by their motto of celebrating Christ and caring for the community.

As is my custom when visiting any country, I perform Google searches to find churches where I could fellowship on Sundays. My belief in meeting new people and hearing the Gospel led me to explore various options. Among them, Watoto Church stood out due to its positive reviews.

At Watoto Church, I loved the sense of celebration and devotion to Christ. Also, their genuine commitment to caring for the community.

The warmth and kindness extended by the members were inspiring, and I felt a strong connection to the church from the moment I stepped inside. Through their services and interactions, I witnessed God’s love and compassion in action.

Pastor Brian preaching at Watoto Downtown

The experience reinforced my belief in the power of fellowship and communal worship. I will always cherish the memories and lessons learned during my time there. I am grateful to have spent every Sunday there.

    Who are the founders?

The dynamic ministry, founded by Gary and Marilyn Skinner, has been rapidly growing. It boasts an impressive network of 13 branches across Kampala and other cities. Whether you find yourself in the bustling capital or other locations in the country, you have the opportunity to fellowship.

During my visit, I attended the Downtown main branch. There are numerous options to choose from, including Kansanga, Bugolobi, Ntinda, Bweyogere, Kyengera, Lubowa, Bbira, Suubi, Gulu, Laminadera, Nina, and Entebbe, each with the same mission and spirit.

    Watoto church praise team

The services at Watoto Church are filled with contagious enthusiasm. Starting with a lively praise session that lasts almost 20 minutes. I couldn’t help but clap and jump with reckless abandon, as the praise team led us in a selection of contemporary gospel songs.

Some of which were composed by the talented members themselves. The harmonious blend of various musical instruments, including acoustic guitar, piano, electric guitar, and drums. These were accompanied by a uniform and spirited choir backing the lead singers, made the experience truly unforgettable.

The dedication to quality extended to the sound system and overall presentation, leaving me thoroughly impressed.

    praise team of Watoto
    Praise team of Watoto

The church’s commitment to developing future leaders was evident. Pastor Gary invested years in training and raising pastors.

They now oversee the various branches with the same mission at heart. The joyfulness in singing and worshiping God was contagious, and each service left me feeling happier and uplifted. Even a year later, some of the songs I learned during my time there continue to resonate in my heart.

They are a constant reminder of the joyful experience I had at Watoto Church. If ever I had the chance to relocate to Kampala, I would gladly join their praise team.

What caught my attention the most at Watoto church?

During my time there, one aspect that deeply impressed me was their insistence on members belonging to Cell Groups.

These are small congregational gatherings that meet regularly outside of the main church services. The church’s motto, “Life is better together,” truly reflects the reality I experienced during my stay.

Watoto Church strongly emphasizes that God never intended for us to navigate life alone.

They believe that being in relationship with fellow believers, and fostering personal growth are essential aspects of a Christian’s journey.

What to expect at cell groups?

The importance of Cell Groups is underscored by the church. Several key reasons why they are integral to a member’s spiritual life:

    1. Cells help individuals discover and nurture their spiritual gifts, leading them to become actively involved in various church activities.
    2. These groups serve as an excellent platform to introduce non-Christian friends to the Christian way of life. It creates a welcoming and nurturing atmosphere.

In summary, Watoto Church passionately asserts that through Cell Groups, Christians can truly connect. Equually, they can grow, and, in turn, disciple others. This fosters a community committed to making a positive impact on cities and nations.

I witnessed the uniqueness of each Cell Group, tailored to the needs of its members and the local community.

    When do cell groups meet?

Most Cell Groups convene on Wednesdays at 5:30 pm, with one meeting taking place every third Wednesday of the month.

Each group has a dedicated leader. Members have the freedom to choose the Cell Group closest to their homes, making it convenient and practical for everyone.

Although I expressed my interest in joining a Cell Group, I felt a tinge of sadness as I couldn’t get the opportunity. Presumably because I was a foreign tourist.

Nonetheless, I wholeheartedly agree with the powerful statement I encountered at Watoto Church: “All life is a sacred act of worship,” as inscribed on their offering envelopes.

It resonates deeply with my belief that we are created to worship God above all else. That truth became even more alive during my time at Watoto Church.

What is the history of Watoto church?

Amidst the tumultuous civil war in Uganda, Gary received a divine vision from God to establish a local church in Kampala.

Now, after 35 years, that vision has transformed thousands of vulnerable children’s lives. Through their dedicated efforts, countless children have found loving families. Women have been empowered to care for them with love and compassion.

Remarkably, this church has become a beacon of hope, rescuing numerous children from dire circumstances.

In addition, they provide care and support to former child soldiers. Their unwavering commitment to making a difference has left a profound impact on the lives of these young souls. Nurturing them with love and giving them a chance at a brighter future.

With each passing year, this ministry continues to grow. It is touching the hearts of many and changing their lives of those who were once in desperate need.

Thanks to the vision and dedication of Gary and his team. Countless lives have been transformed. It has had a ripple effect of their compassion and care extends far beyond the boundaries of Kampala. They are making a difference in the wider community and nation.

    What is the children ministry?

The ministry of Watoto Church has been expanding to encompass people of all age groups.

Since 1994, the renowned Watoto Children’s Choir has been on extensive travels, carrying a message of hope for Africa and the Gospel of Christ to various corners of the world.

Beyond their captivating performances, the choir also serves as a leadership training ground for these young children, instilling a strong sense of responsibility while immersing them in diverse cultures.

Through their powerful testimonies, these children share their stories, inspiring children globally to find hope in Christ.

The evangelism through music has proven to be one of the most effective ways to spread the Gospel, leaving me fascinated and touched when I had the chance to meet them. Although they didn’t perform at the church every Sunday, there are dedicated Sundays for children, and witnessing the joy and energy of these young performers on the large church platform was a heartwarming experience.

Their infectious smiles and enthusiastic dancing filled the air, and I couldn’t help but join in with loud clapping and a beaming smile.

Watoto Church demonstrated a genuine commitment to engaging the youth in godly activities during weekends and holidays.

The church held them in high regard, providing them with opportunities for growth and learning. One particular event that caught my attention was the monthly gathering titled “Love, Sex, and Money.”

Why does the church invest in building youths?

It was evident that the church prioritized educating the youth on important life topics.

They recognize that being well-informed is essential for effecting positive change. I was delighted to participate in one of these events. Two renowned gospel musicians, Pompi from Zambia and Limoblaze from Nigeria, were invited to share their insights on family, money, and the Gospel of Christ.

As an aspiring gospel musician myself, it was inspiring to hear about their journeys and experiences.

Towards the end of the nearly two-hour event, the packed auditorium came alive as both artists performed individually.

The joyous atmosphere of singing and dancing remains a cherished memory for me.

Watoto Church’s dedication to nurturing young talents and sharing the message of hope is evident.

They foster a vibrant community through music and events leaving a lasting impression on me, and I will forever cherish the moments of joy and inspiration I experienced during my visit in July 2022.

My experience at the one day tour to the Watoto villages

The Downtown church announced an exciting one-day tour for its congregants to visit the remarkable Watoto villages.

Without hesitation, I registered and eagerly paid a small fee for lunch and transportation, feeling thrilled to embark on this unique journey with hundreds of fellow members. I must admit, I was curious and unsure of what to expect, as I had never heard of a church having its own village before.

But there it was, no mistake in the heading – Watoto truly has villages. Over the years, as part of their mission to assist women and children, the church acquired an extensive piece of land about 45 minutes away from Kampala.

This vast land has been thoughtfully divided into several sections. Each serving a purpose in nurturing and supporting the children.

    watoto village

As we explored the village, I was amazed to find a fully equipped school with classrooms and technical sections where the children have the freedom to explore various trades and fields of study. The dedication to their development was evident in the professional teachers who support and guide them along their chosen paths.

My surprise grew as we visited the carpentry, electrical engineering, and mechanic classrooms, but it was the tailoring and spa sections that left me truly impressed.

Why is there a church at the village?

At the heart of this expansive village stands a grand church edifice, a symbol of unwavering support and faith.

This magnificent structure serves as a place of fellowship for not just the Watoto children and women but also for everyone living in the vicinity.

A dedicated Pastor leads this branch, and during our visit, we had a similar worship session to what we were accustomed to at the Downtown church, accompanied by a short yet powerful encouragement from the Bible.

Members standing infront of the church to welcome us

Witnessing the Watoto villages firsthand left me in awe of the church’s immense efforts to provide holistic support to the children and women under their care.

The combination of education, skill development, and spiritual nurturing within this community is a testament to the powerful impact of faith-driven initiatives.

My one-day tour turned into a truly eye-opening experience, and I left with a renewed sense of admiration and respect for the vision and dedication of Watoto Church.

    Watoto clinic

Along one of the edges of the extensive property, we came across a medical clinic that showcased the holistic care provided by Watoto Church.

Excitedly, we explored the clinic, and as we stepped inside, we were shown some of its vital areas.

The lab was among the significant places we had the privilege to see, witnessing firsthand the commitment to medical excellence.

Adjacent to the clinic, we noticed a cluster of houses, which we learned were accommodations for the dedicated medical staff who served in this facility.

It was heartwarming to see the close-knit community they had created, working hand in hand to provide quality healthcare to the people under Watoto’s care.

One impressive feature was the clinic van, a symbol of their outreach efforts to extend medical assistance beyond the village’s borders.

The van served as a means to reach out to remote areas, ensuring that medical care was accessible to as many people as possible.

    clinic

    What stood out for me

A remarkable aspect that left a lasting impression was the fact that all Watoto patients received treatment entirely free of charge.

This act of benevolence was is possible through the generous funds provided by the church donations.

Witnessing the selfless nature of this endeavor further underscored the church’s commitment to making a positive impact on the lives of those in need, addressing not only their spiritual well-being but also their physical health.

The medical clinic was an essential component of Watoto’s mission, embodying their dedication to uplifting and transforming lives.

Seeing the compassion and care bestowed upon the patients reaffirmed the profound influence of a faith-driven initiative on the well-being of a community.

Watoto’s provision of free healthcare and quality medical services exemplified their genuine desire to make a meaningful difference in the lives of the people they serve.

    What is Baby Watoto?

An entire, spacious building dedicated solely to the precious little ones, known as Baby Watoto, captured our hearts during the tour.

We were unable to enter the facility for understandable reasons. But as we passed by the transparent glass windows, our smiles were undeniable.

Baby Watoto had thoughtfully divided spaces, catering to the needs of babies of different ages. Each area was filled with adorable cribs and playpens.

The church took no chances when it came to the babies’ well-being.

A registered Pediatrician was appointed, along with a team of dedicated nurses, all impeccably dressed in formal attire. Their focus was on providing excellent care and ensuring the children’s health and safety at all times.

    baby watoto
    baby watoto

What is the history of children at the center?

The stories shared by the director moved us deeply. Some of these precious little ones had been abandoned in remote farmlands.

Others were left by family members who were unable to provide for them.

At Watoto, the church’s funds ensured that all their needs were met with love and compassion. The children have the chance to grow into responsible and flourishing individuals.

In this nurturing environment, each baby receives motherly love and care by the dedicated nannies until they were ready to move on to the next phase of their journey.

Once they reach a certain level of maturity, they are placed into loving homes within the village.

The transition was seamless, as they continued to receive the same love and care from their new families, supported by the strong foundation laid by Baby Watoto.

The sight of Baby Watoto filled our hearts with warmth and gratitude. Knowing that these little ones were given a chance at a better life, a life full with love and support from the church and the entire Watoto community.

Witnessing this tangible demonstration of love and compassion reaffirmed the church’s commitment to impacting lives from the very beginning and nurturing a future generation with hope and possibilities.

    Watoto church family homes

The Watoto villages were truly a sight to behold, with rows of well-organized, three-bedroom houses facing each other.

Each of these homes had a remarkable woman, typically a mother figure, who selflessly cared for eight orphaned or vulnerable children.

Some of these women were widows, who would come along with their own child. The church provides them with the necessary finances to ensure that all the children stay as one big family unit, fostering an environment of love and dignity. Witnessing this nurturing setup left me in awe.

Inside these homes, the children shared bedrooms and grew together as siblings, fostering strong bonds and a sense of belonging.

The church’s thoughtful decision to allocate our lunch funds to the mothers, who in turn hosted at least eight guests that day, was heartwarming.

During lunch, we had the privilege of engaging with the kids, listening to their inspiring stories, and savoring the delicious flavors of Ugandan cuisine.

The effort and care taken by the church to create a stable and loving family environment for these children, who might have otherwise known only instability in life, left me utterly speechless.

What facilities do the children have?

The children were not just well-cared for but could engage in various activities that nurtured their talents and interests.

As we strolled through the village, I spotted a basketball playground where the kids could unwind and have fun. Moreover, there was an entire building dedicated to the arts, with sections featuring beautiful paintings and a small music school.

The availability of musical instruments like pianos allowed the children to learn and express themselves musically. It was evident that these opportunities played a significant role in their overall development.

Throughout the entire trip, I found myself constantly uttering “wow”.

That was because I witnessed the incredible efforts put forth by the church to create a genuine family unit for these children. The love, care, and sense of stability they provided were truly remarkable.

The Watoto villages were an inspiring testament to the transformative power of compassion in changing the lives of those in need.

    Watoto church sustainability projects

As the trip drew to a close, a delightful surprise awaited us – a visit to the farms.

We made a stop at a large goat farm, where we saw numerous goats housed in a well-maintained environment. It is evident that the goats were well-fed.

The goat milk they produce is processed and used to nourish the babies at Baby Watoto. It was no wonder those little ones were healthy, I couldn’t help but whisper to myself in amazement.

Although we didn’t have the opportunity to explore the farmlands and witness the cultivation of vegetables, we heard about the church’s vision and purpose behind these agricultural endeavors. It was inspiring to learn that the church aimed to raise leaders in Uganda’s agricultural sector.

Who will strategically influence the development of agricultural policies and ultimately making a positive impact on the nation as a whole.

The church’s holistic approach to its mission was truly remarkable. It extended not only to the spiritual and emotional care of its community but also to the practical aspects of sustaining and nurturing its members.

By investing in farming and agriculture, the church was not only ensuring the well-being of its own community. At the same time, they seek to create leaders who could bring positive change and development to the nation’s agricultural landscape.

As I reflected on the entire trip, the visit to the farms added another layer of admiration. I saw dedication to making a meaningful difference in the lives of the people it served and its commitment to fostering positive change on a broader scale.

It was evident that their vision extended beyond the immediate needs.

They sought to create far-reaching impacts while contributing to the well-being and development of both individuals and the nation as a whole.

    Consider volunteering at Watoto church

Indeed, the surprises continued as I learned that anyone has the opportunity to apply and volunteer at Watoto.

It was heartening to discover that the church opens its doors to international volunteers. They want people who are eager to contribute their skills and time to support the various projects.

The application process is to ensure a seamless and organized experience. Prospective volunteers can apply in advance.

By providing the necessary information and expressing their interest in contributing to the school projects, caring for the babies, or assisting in development initiatives.

Volunteers have to fund their own stay during their time at Watoto.

Yet, they have the chance to be a part of such a transformative and impactful community is undoubtedly a blessing in itself. Watoto Church warmly welcomes individuals with diverse skill sets and expertise. They invite everyone to lend their abilities to empower and uplift others.

This global call to serve at Watoto Church exemplifies the church’s commitment to fostering a sense of unity and partnership among people.

It creates a unique opportunity for those who wish to make a meaningful difference and experience the joy of supporting and caring for others in a nurturing and compassionate environment.

The possibility of volunteering at Watoto Church resonates deeply with the essence of its mission.

The ground level was an impressive sight, featuring one of the largest screens I had ever seen.

It continuously streamed videos that described development projects and illustrated the country’s remarkable growth.

Another section captivated me with boards adorned with countless images and brief descriptions, vividly portraying how various areas had evolved through the years. Despite being unable to read everything in a single day of adventure, the gallery left a lasting impression of Singapore’s dynamic metamorphosis.

What amazed me most about this engaging gallery was its interactive nature.

There were sections where visitors like me could touch screens, follow instructions, and immerse ourselves in learning.

The best part? This enriching experience came completely free of charge.

Before entering, like many others, I wondered about the cost, but the friendly security guard confirmed that this incredible learning journey was accessible to all, without any entry fee.

During our walk, we discovered a delightful surprise – a street garden oasis, complete with a unique swing designed for two people to swing in opposite directions.

It was the perfect spot to unwind after a busy day.

As we continued our leisurely stroll, the city’s impressive skyscrapers stood tall, beckoning us with their grandeur.

It was challenging not to capture their majestic beauty in photographs, along with the plethora of other intricately designed buildings lining the streets.

Despite some appearing aged, many of these architectural wonders were actually quite new.

What fascinated me most was the distinct style of each building, compelling me to frequently snap pictures until my phone’s battery bid farewell.

Even the restaurants and shops adorned the roadside with captivating statues and unique decor, adding an extra charm to the already enchanting streets of Singapore.

    5. Have lunch at Lau Pa Sat Festival market

Our next stop on the journey was an old food market. As the clock neared 4 pm, our hungry stomachs were demanding attention.

Deciding to sate our appetite with a late lunch, we relished the opportunity to explore the area. Stepping into the market, we were greeted by an impressive sight – the largest ceiling fans I had ever encountered, circulating refreshing air throughout the vast space teeming with numerous food stalls.

With so many tempting options to choose from, we found ourselves undecided and eventually settled on trying a bit of everything.

Our spontaneous decision proved to be a delightful surprise.

    Singapore

Hanna savored her noodles slowly, enjoying every mouthful, while I found myself unable to resist the allure of the fragrant yellow coconut rice.

The accompanying fried chicken was a true standout, exquisitely seasoned and perfectly cooked.

I couldn’t help but wish that this culinary haven was closer to our lodge, as it would undoubtedly become my go-to food hub.

And the best part? The fried coconut rice was an unbelievable steal at just 1 dollar! It was an incredibly budget-friendly meal, proving that one can indeed indulge in delicious and affordable food even in the heart of Singapore.

    6. Do exercise at the Singapore National stadium

Our impromptu visit to the expansive national stadium complex turned out to be quite a sight to behold.

The place was bustling with energy as predominantly young individuals engaged in various sports activities. Skaters dominated the scene, displaying their impressive flipping skills, accompanied by the loud thud of their landings.

The atmosphere was contagious, and even children could be seen gleefully riding their bikes, accompanied by their parents, while others enjoyed their time running on the well-designed tracks surrounding the massive complex.

Regrettably, the main field was closed during our visit due to the absence of ongoing sports activities.

However, I highly recommend checking online to see if any sporting events are taking place. If not, you can still join in with others and partake in some exercises. It was evident that Singaporeans were passionate about their fitness, as they wholeheartedly embraced exercise and physical activities.

The dedication to staying fit extended not just to adults but was also being instilled in their children.

This is a heartening testament to the nation’s commitment to a healthy lifestyle.

Although our time there was relatively short, the impression left on me was that Singaporeans truly value and prioritize their well-being and that of their community.

    7. Spin around the Gardens by the Bay

It is a beautiful and serene space adorned with lush greenery and carefully landscaped alleys for visitors to bask in nature’s embrace.

The tranquility of this place was truly enchanting. Whether it was admiring the charming cemented animals or finding solace atop the rock pile, every moment here was soothing and relaxing.

One highlight not to miss the picture-perfect bridge showcasing iconic Singapore landmarks in the backdrop.

As the sun dipped below the horizon, the night view offered an even more magical experience.

It was glistening lights lending an extra touch of allure to the entire scene. This was a spot that effortlessly captured the essence of Singapore’s allure.

This combining natural beauty with its urban landmarks to create an unforgettable and picturesque setting.

    8. Watch the Singapore super tree night show

Concluding our eventful day of exploration, we found ourselves strolling amidst the awe-inspiring Super Tree Garden.

There are gigantic steel structures soared to intimidating heights yet exuded a mesmerizing beauty.

These towering structures have lush green vegetation, a testament to Singapore’s unwavering commitment to preserving and enhancing its green spaces.

Hanna informed me about the 7 pm night show, and we eagerly decided to wait for it.

Although the 15-minute show felt brief, it was an enthralling experience. As the clock struck the hour, a loud announcement introduced the performing group. The fatigue from the day made it difficult for me to remember the name.

Everyone gathered eagerly, taking their seats along the edges of the trees and the cemented lawn, filled with anticipation.

With a resounding clap, the show began, and the trees lit up in a mesmerizing dance of colors that changed in harmony with each note played by unseen musicians.

It dawned on me that the show was solely about the captivating display of lights, without any human performers. Despite this unexpected twist, the experience was delightful and relaxing, making it time well spent.

    My remark

As I reflect on our mid-day to 10 pm tour, I can confidently say it was a truly satisfying day.

Best things to do in Jambiani village, Tanzania

Jambiani, located on the Tanzanian island of Unguja in Zanzibar, is a cluster of villages. When I hopped on the bus heading towards the southeast coast, I grew impatient once we passed Paje. To my surprise, there was yet another village called Makunduchi beyond Jambiani.

If you seek a beach holiday with a relaxing atmosphere, Jambiani is said to be the perfect destination.

When I made the decision to venture far from the main city center in Zanzibar and stay in a village, I had no idea what to expect.

My curiosity was piqued, and I felt satisfied with my boldness. One of the most fascinating aspects I encountered here was the seaweed business among the locals in Tanzania. Along the coastline, numerous farms can be found, employing around 15,000 individuals, with a majority of them being women.

    Take village walk

During my initial stroll along the beach, an intriguing sight captured my attention. I observed women strategically placing sticks into the ocean and affixing seaweeds to them, nurturing their growth and size. These seaweeds were carefully harvested and left to dry under the warm sun for a number of days.

Eventually, they would be sold to a confectionery company. Among these diligent individuals, I encountered a warm-hearted woman who graciously shared these fascinating details with me.

    jabiani
Jambiani men and women doing their daily activities

On the flip side, the men in the village were engaged in fishing activities.

Despite being a seemingly small village, it possessed all the necessary elements for a simple and self-sustaining life.

There were local shops, mosques for worship, uninterrupted electricity, a reliable water supply, and a welcoming atmosphere.

English wasn’t widely spoken among the villagers, as it was the case throughout the entire country.

However, whenever our paths crossed on the roadside, they never failed to offer warm greetings. I cherished their radiant smiles and their willingness to lend a helping hand.

I assure you that taking a stroll through the village would be a delightful experience. It is advisable, however, to avoid walking during the scorching noon hours due to the intense heat. Carrying an umbrella would be beneficial if you decide to venture out.

The relentless sun had left my skin tanned, but that didn’t deter me from exploring the sandy narrow streets, seeking shade under the lofty palm trees, or admiring talented painters capturing the essence of the village through their artwork.

Apart from the famous beach swimming, I added an exceptional place to visit at the end of this article. You would be interested in this.

    1. Swim at the Jambiani beach

Jambiani’s pristine white sand beach ranks among the most breathtaking I have ever encountered.

Being a beginner swimmer at the time, it served as the perfect location for honing my newfound aquatic skills.

The primary allure lies in the expansive lagoon with its shallow and gentle waters, making it ideal for wading.

Moreover, the beach offers ample opportunities for snorkeling and diving, providing a mesmerizing glimpse into the underwater world.

Thanks to its consistent sideshore winds, it also emerges as a sought-after destination for wind- and kitesurfing enthusiasts.

I vividly recall my awe-filled exclamation upon laying eyes on the barrier reef, located a few kilometers offshore, boasting a magnificent crystalline turquoise hue.

During the hours of 11:30 am to 4 pm, when the high tide rolled in, swimming in the Indian Ocean became an absolute delight.

Some days, I found myself immersed in the water for two or three hours, unable to resist the temptation to continue.

The shallow areas were particularly favorable for my attempts at fish-like dives, sans fins. I couldn’t help but chuckle at myself as the waves propelled me farther than my own energy could carry.

    Enjoy the beach walk

During certain evenings, both I and fellow foreigners took pleasure in leisurely beach walks, taking advantage of the low tide.

The tranquil ambiance of the warm sunset provided an ideal setting for personal reflection and meditation, at least in my case.

Whether welcomed or not, it was common to encounter Masai businesspeople who would approach you, showcasing their exquisite and vibrant beadwork.

Despite the language barrier, many of them would make an effort to engage in conversation, even if I couldn’t understand Swahili.

In response, a simple smile was the gesture I offered, as engaging in lengthy discussions proved challenging.

Additionally, I found great delight in visiting the shops of beach artists. Their creations, adorned with vibrant hues depicting either Tanzanian or African culture, captivated my attention.

I couldn’t resist admiring and even touching these magnificent pieces. It was truly a gratifying experience, akin to a free tour through a captivating art gallery, one that I gladly embraced.

    2. Go Cave touring

In my quest to discover activities in the quaint village, I stumbled upon an unexpected gem.

It happened during one of my leisurely walks around Jambiani, where I would wander along the main road, attentively scanning the signboards for anything intriguing.

It was during one of these meandering explorations that my eyes caught sight of a cave tour.

Intrigued, I ventured into a seemingly hidden and overgrown bushy area in search of this intriguing discovery.

Although the tall grass and desolate, unpaved road initially instilled a slight sense of unease, my apprehension dissipated as I noticed people coming and going.

Eventually, I arrived at the entrance gate of the Congoman Cave and Restaurant, nestled on the edge of the dusty road.

The place was a delightful departure from my expectations.

The main courtyard bloomed with vibrant flowers, and every corner exuded cleanliness and meticulous care. I was greeted by a polite receptionist, who promptly called the owner to address my numerous inquiries.

Under the scorching sun, a young man wearing a simple t-shirt made his way towards me with a warm smile.

Curiosity sparked in his eyes as he greeted me, eager to know the purpose of my visit.

Within seconds, he deduced from my accent that I was African, and we engaged in friendly conversation.

As I snapped photos of the striking wall adorned with vivid colors and an intricate map of Africa, he introduced himself as Congoman and confirmed that he was the proud owner and manager of the establishment.

Why did Congoman start the cave business?

As he began narrating the history of the place, I eagerly absorbed his words, intrigued by the story he had to share.

In his own words, he revealed that he had once embraced the Rastafarian lifestyle, sporting thick dreadlocks and indulging in recreational drug use.

Unfortunately, society often associates such behaviors with drug addiction or criminal activity.

Several years ago, an unfortunate incident occurred that brought international attention to Tanzania.

A French tourist was tragically kidnapped and killed, prompting the Tanzanian government to launch an intensive investigation to bring the perpetrator to justice.

In their pursuit of justice, random military arrests were carried out across Zanzibar, including the area where we stood.

    jabiani
    Jambiani

People like him- Congoman could’ve had been easily arrested and detained because of his lifestyle.

To evade the situation, he cut his hair and reformed his life.

It was then, that the initiative to manage the cave came to his mind.

    When is the cave open?

Between the hours of 10 am and 6 pm, visitors have the opportunity to join Congoman on a guided tour of the cave.

However, the restaurant only opens at 8 pm, which was too late for me to wait for a meal.

Nonetheless, I quenched my thirst by purchasing a refreshing bottle of fresh fantasy to soothe my parched throat.

For those interested in making a reservation, it is advisable to contact them at +255 786 251 067.

Initially, I hadn’t planned on venturing into the cave, unsure of what fascinating discoveries an underground African cave with potentially limited lighting could hold.

To my surprise, Congoman generously offered to show me the first section of the cave’s entrance free of charge.

Despite not having allocated a specific budget for such an adventure, my curiosity was piqued. We descended down a narrow steel staircase, allowing us to explore the cave from top to bottom. This particular area was adequately illuminated, enabling me to observe the surroundings.

The tour sparked my interest, but I felt a sense of unease about continuing alone. Had there been other tourists or friends accompanying me, I would have been more motivated to explore further beneath the surface.

As Congoman tossed a small rock, its loud impact with the water resonated throughout the cave, capturing my attention.

    congoman cave
    congoman cave

How long does it take to tour the Jambiani cave?

Congoman mentioned that within one hour, we could explore various sections of the cave. However, I wasn’t inclined to stay for an extended period.

The cave walls had sharp edges, requiring us to bend or crouch while navigating through certain areas.

To my surprise, I noticed a small chair resting idle in one corner, providing a spot for rest. In an effort to make the most of my brief visit, Congoman used the edges of the sharp rocks to create random music, producing a unique and otherworldly sound.

The silence within the cave was so profound that even the slightest sound could be heard, as if the air itself was dense with tranquility.

The hanging rocks exhibited a striking whiteness unlike anything I had ever seen before.

Even when I reached out to touch them, the sensation was indescribable. It became evident to me that there was likely more to explore and appreciate within the cave.

Congoman assured me that they had helmets, boats, and torches available for all visitors, much like engineers, in case of any unexpected occurrences underground. He emphasized his expertise and professionalism when it came to cave exploration.

However, I would strongly recommend conducting your own research on cave safety before embarking on such a tour.

Although I felt unprepared to venture into the cave alone, I was convinced by the precautionary measures Congoman had in place to address any potential accidents or mishaps.

What else is in the vicinity of the cave?

Continuing with my complimentary tour, I remained grateful to Congoman as he proceeded to show me various points of interest.

We walked behind the small houses, which he mentioned were available for rent to guests.

These fully furnished rooms were specifically designed for long-term stays. Before I could express my interest in potentially staying there, he informed me that he only accepted guests who planned to stay for a minimum of six months.

According to him, the rental income helped sustain him since cave tours were not conducted regularly. I found his approach fair and understandable.

As if the surprises weren’t enough, Congoman invited me into one of his uniquely designed houses.

The bathroom walls were adorned entirely with colorful bottle caps, creating an eye-catching mosaic.

house for rent beside the cave

For pet enthusiasts, there was a friendly and sizable dog on the premises.

The peaceful atmosphere enveloped me during the short time I spent there.

Unlike other parts of the city where the sound of nearby mosques or loud music would often echo, here there was only the gentle serenade of crickets singing from the surrounding bushes.

Reflecting on my month-long stay in Jambiani, I couldn’t help but wish I had discovered this place earlier.

Whether it was the steel-colored butterflies thoughtfully placed in the garden to resemble real ones or the captivating artworks scattered throughout, I couldn’t help but imagine the wonderful ambiance of dining in this enchanting location.

I wholeheartedly recommend this place as an ideal spot to unwind and soak up the evening vibes.

    3. Shop at the Jambiani plaza.

Upon hearing about the plaza, I initially envisioned a sprawling mall.

However, to my surprise, it turned out to be a single-floor L-shaped building.

Despite its size, many regarded it as a remarkable shopping center due to the variety of amenities it housed. Inside, there was a spacious European-style supermarket, a bank branch, an ATM, an Italian restaurant, a medical clinic, a store specializing in hotel supplies, Tanzanite jewelry, and a myriad of other offerings.

Notably, the restaurant situated at the front of the plaza was reputed for its delectable pizza.

I embarked on a shopping trip at this establishment, where I purchased various essential items such as sardines and rice, among other necessities.

To explore further experiences and insights, I would recommend visiting the AFRICABZ.COM website, where fellow tourists have shared their thoughts and recommendations.

What is special about the Cheonan city museum?

Cheonan, a charming small city located just a few kilometers away from Seoul, offers a hidden wonder in the South Korean peninsula.

Whether you prefer traveling by bus or train, this city is easily accessible and definitely worth a visit.

As the largest and most densely populated city in Chungcheongnam-do and the third-largest in the Hoseo region, after Daejeon and Cheongju, Cheonan-si holds a significant place in South Korea.

One of the highlights of your trip to Cheonan is the Cheonan City Museum, a must-see attraction, especially if you are a history fanatic.

The best part? Unlike many museums around the world, this gem doesn’t have an admission fee.

That alone makes it a perfect destination for a short, one-hour visit.

Inside, you’ll be greeted by a well-lit and captivating world of South Korean history.

When I visited the museum back in 2016, it was open and staffed with welcoming personnel.

Although you can take your time exploring the exhibits, it’s essential to plan your visit within specific hours.

Koreans value time management, a commendable trait, and the museum operates from 09:00 a.m. to 18:00 p.m. during March to October.

If you visit between November and February, the operating hours are from 09:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. Just remember to enter the museum at least an hour before closing time to make the most of your visit.

What time can you visit the museum?

Before you finalize your travel plans, be aware that the museum is closed on Mondays, January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day, and Chuseok (the harvest festival on the 15th of August by the lunar calendar).

Although the museum itself closes at night, don’t miss the chance to catch a glimpse of the magnificent view from its illuminated facade.

The city lights make the area all the more enchanting.

To ensure a smooth visit and gather more information, you have the option to contact the museum through their phone or visit their website.

In summary, a trip to Cheonan promises an unforgettable experience, with its historical treasures waiting to be explored at the Cheonan City Museum.

Don’t forget to plan accordingly and enjoy the captivating journey through South Korea’s rich history and culture.

Here’s why you should pay this place a visit

    1. Children Exhibition Room

There’s no better way to introduce your children to Korea’s history than by immersing them in it firsthand.

The large room in the Cheonan City Museum provides an incredible opportunity for children to connect with the past.

Here, they can touch and interact with actual relics, making history come alive in a tangible way.

As they explore the room, the children can engage in various activities like solving puzzles and even taking a ride on a steam engine train or royal carriage, giving them a taste of the past’s royal experiences.

The museum also utilizes animation pictures to teach them about significant historic figures, making the learning experience both informative and entertaining.

I recall walking past this room on the first floor, and it warmed my heart to see the children fully engaged and enjoying their time.

Their smiles and excitement were evident, and it was evident that history was not just a subject in a textbook but a living and dynamic story that they could be a part of.

Witnessing their enthusiasm, it’s clear that the Cheonan City Museum has succeeded in bringing history to life for the young ones.

This interactive approach to learning about Korea’s history creates lasting impressions on the children’s minds, fostering a deeper understanding and appreciation for their cultural heritage.

Such experiences will undoubtedly leave a positive and lasting impact on their lives, sparking their curiosity and inspiring them to explore the fascinating world of history further.

    2. Traffic and Communication Room

Cheonan city has held significant importance as a strategic traffic hub throughout history. The Cheonan Three Way Intersection serves as a central point from which trains, subways, and high-speed electric railways connect in all directions across the Korean Peninsula. The city’s charm lies not only in its beauty but also in its rich historical landmarks, including the ancient signal-fire tower, Seong-hwan Station Office, and the captivating history of Cheonan Station.

As I explored the museum further, I discovered other fascinating exhibits, such as communication and traffic vehicles from the Joseon Dynasty era. These exhibits offer guests a unique glimpse into the lives of people from the past, allowing us to understand how they navigated and lived during those times.

My stroll through this room on the first floor left a lasting impression on me. I was truly amazed by the dedication and effort invested by the Cheonan city council in preserving these precious ancient artifacts. Their commitment to safeguarding the cultural heritage of the region was evident, and witnessing such historical treasures up close was a sight to behold.

Cheonan’s commitment to preserving its rich history and showcasing it to visitors speaks volumes about the city’s pride in its cultural heritage. This museum serves as a testament to the city’s deep-rooted connection with its past and its desire to share that legacy with the world. It was an enriching experience, and I left with a sense of admiration for the city’s efforts to cherish its history and make it accessible for generations to come.

    3. Cheonan city museum Three-Way Intersection Room

As I ascended to the upper floor of the museum, I was uncertain of what new treasures awaited me.

To my delight, I stumbled upon a room that truly transported me back in time.

This room was a vivid representation of where scholars once gathered before attending state exams, creating an atmosphere of intellectual exchange and camaraderie among travelers from different parts of the Korean Peninsula.

It served as a social hub, where people could come together, interact, and share their experiences.

Surrounding this gathering spot were taverns and inns, which were essential in ancient days when people traveled to Cheonan using the royal carriage.

Passing through the Hoseo Boundary Government Hall, the gateway to the Hoseo region, was an exciting experience in itself.

The culture and folklore of Cheonan came to life before my eyes. I could imagine people leisurely sipping wine under the shelter of weeping willows, enjoying the breathtaking scenery around them.

The ambiance was infused with the charm of the olden days, as people shared interesting and pleasant folk tales of Cheonan, adding to the enchantment of the place.

    What did the locals do?

The air hummed with the melodies of local folk songs, and as I immersed myself in the surroundings, history seemed to transcend time.

It felt as though I had stepped into a different era, where the past was not just a distant memory but a vibrant reality.

The captivating exhibits and carefully crafted setting made it easy to imagine the lives and experiences of those who once graced these streets.

In that moment, history was not just a collection of facts and figures; it was a living, breathing entity.

The museum’s portrayal of Cheonan’s past was so authentic and captivating that everything seemed real. I felt deeply connected to the stories and the people who shaped the city’s history.

It was an unforgettable experience, one that allowed me to truly appreciate the rich tapestry of Cheonan’s past and understand how it continues to influence its present-day charm.

    4. Archaeological Room

As the title suggests, this room on the second floor of the museum is dedicated to exhibiting relics dating back to the Old Stone Age up until the period of the Three Dynasties, all of which were excavated in Cheonan.

Here, visitors can learn about the origins of Cheonan’s name, which was given during the 13th year of King Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty (930) when the Cheonan District was established.

The remnants on display in this section include fascinating bronze artifacts, offering a glimpse into the city’s ancient past.

Adjacent to this room, a second exhibition space showcases Cheonan’s national defense remains and other relics. These exhibits highlight the city’s geopolitical significance throughout history, shedding light on its role in regional defense strategies.

Towards the edge of the second floor, visitors will find another engaging exhibition room.

This particular room is dedicated to showcasing the excavation process, providing a unique opportunity for guests to understand the fascinating field of archaeology.

Through interactive displays and informative presentations, visitors can gain insights into how relics and historical artifacts are carefully unearthed and preserved by archaeologists.

This section not only enriches the overall museum experience but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the painstaking efforts and expertise required to uncover and preserve the invaluable pieces of Cheonan’s history.

By offering a window into the world of archaeology, this exhibition room enhances the visitor’s understanding of the city’s rich heritage and the dedication involved in preserving it for future generations to cherish.

    5.Cheonan City Museum History Room

As I reached the top floor of the museum, I was delighted to find history and culture beautifully interwoven throughout the exhibits.

One section showcased countryside villages that thrived between the Goryeo Dynasty and the Joseon Dynasty, providing a glimpse into the daily lives of the past.

In one corner, a small stone monument caught my eye, representing the temple named Bongseon-honggyeong, while in another corner, a magnificent bronze bell belonged to the Cheon-heung temple.

Among the treasures decorating the walls, I couldn’t miss the portrait of the esteemed royal secret commissioner, Mun-su Park.

What truly surprised me was the sight of a written royal order for exempting compulsory labor, which held historical significance within the feudal territory.

The fact that it was displayed on the wall of Gwanh-dell Temple added to the authenticity and importance of the museum’s exhibits.

The room also highlighted the Cheonan government office, Jiksan District office, and Mokcheon Confucian Temple and school, each playing a vital role in shaping the region’s history and culture.

    My experience

After immersing myself in this fascinating journey through time for over an hour, the most heartwarming surprise awaited me.

The museum staff kindly presented me with a free postcard book, featuring nearly 10 pages of bright and captivating pictures describing each floor and its major attractions.

It was a thoughtful gesture that allowed me to cherish and share my wonderful experience at the Cheonan City Museum with my family and friends.

This gesture truly added to the overall warmth and hospitality I felt during my visit, leaving me with not only cherished memories but also a tangible memento of this remarkable journey into the rich history and culture of Cheonan.

Considering the rapid pace of growth and continuous changes in Korea, I can imagine that the Cheonan City Museum has likely expanded its offerings and exhibits since my last visit in 2016. As of 2023, this captivating place may have even more exciting things to see and explore.

During my visit, the museum already boasted an impressive collection that brought history to life.

This allows visitors to touch relics, engage in interactive activities, and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Cheonan.

However, with the passage of time, the museum might have introduced new sections, updated existing displays, and added more insights into Korea’s intriguing past.

    My recommendation

If you plan to visit the museum in 2023 or beyond, I’m sure you’ll be pleasantly surprised by the enhancements.

The additions made to this historical treasure trove will be great.

The Cheonan City Museum will undoubtedly continue to be a place where history comes alive, and each visitor can experience the captivating journey through time in an ever-evolving and enriching manner. Enjoy your visit, and may you create your own cherished memories of this remarkable city and its vibrant history.

Homigot: Pohang city’s must visit place

Pohang city- main seaport of Daegu-Gyeongbuk region-has the largest population of North Gyeongsang Province and has the third-largest land area of any city in Korea. When looking across the ocean at Yeongildae Beach, one could see a peculiar sight in that, there is an endless horizon. This short article will highlight a must go place-Homigot.

It is my one of my favorite recommendation to everyone should you spend a few days in Pohang. I went there three separate times with different groups of people and couldn’t resist the invitation not to go if I had had the fourth suggestion. This place cannot be enjoyed in one visit; at least it wasn’t for me in 2017. If relaxing is what you want to do when you travel, then you just found a place you will consider relaxing.

For me as a student in Pohang, instead of burying my head in endless hours of studies, these refreshing trips were a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.

    Where is Homigot

Homigot is a large stretch of hillside beside the beach. It is located at the easternmost end of the Korean peninsula, in what is thought to be the tail of the tiger based on geography. This is why it has gained its Chinese characters of the tiger tail land.

When Kim Jeong-ho made the Daedongyeojido Map – the most important and oldest map in Korea, he visited Homigot seven times to confirm the geography. This was during the Joseon dynasty era.  He confirmed that this was the easternmost part of South Korea.

Generally, the earliest sunrise can be witnessed at Homigot. Also, the annual Homigot Sunrise Festival takes place on New Year’s morning. I was not able to participate in any of the festivals during my two-year stay in Pohang.  Though I visited thrice at different seasons of the year—summer, winter and spring—a Korean friend suggested the best is summer before Korean Independence Day. The main reason is that swimming is not suitable around that time of the year. That’s as a result of the cold water from Siberia, which starts moving down the eastern coast of the Korean peninsula. On all my trips, I didn’t swim, mainly because I was interested in soaking up the fresh sea breeze rather than getting wet.

When is the best time to go to Homigot?

Every time could be great, but the sunrise effect is different in some seasons based on the hours. It takes about an hour or more to drive from the downtown city center to Homigot.

As per the weather, it is best to check the forecast before you begin the trip. Frequent rain can ruin the whole trip. That will also cause the ocean view to be foggy or not bright enough.

Except things have changed now; as of 2019, when I left the city, there was no direct public transportation. You will have to take several buses and wait long minutes at bus stops, as my friends and I did on my last visit there. The best option is to rent a car or carpool with friends for an easy ride.

    homigot clock
    Homigot clock

Some Pohang people say to begin the trip early to avoid the morning rush hour or afterward.  That means 6 a.m. will be perfect to catch the early sunrise. There are two large platforms in front of the Hand of Coexistence, one at the bottom and one at the top. The best photo spots are on the left side of the gigantic sculpture.

Right after the sun peaks its radiance above the horizon, the bottom platform has the best photo view because the angle of the sun is positioned right in-between the thumb and index fingers. On the contrary, as the sun starts to rise above the horizon, you need to shift your position to the upper platform if you want some lovely pictures. I had so much fun taking pictures all around Homigot.

What was my first trip experience?

This was an open invitation by two of my Professors’ wives. They were so kind to offer an American exchange student – Regan and I this exciting adventure. I remember saying yes before, one of them completed the sentence. On this trip, we arrived early and walked along the beach enjoying all the sites. It was especially unique because we had the rare opportunity to see and talk to some divers. I was somehowe surprised because I saw female divers for the first time. They had just come back to land after a long deep dive. They and many people, dive into the large ocean on days with no strong tides, harvest seaweed and bring to land. These seaweed are then salted, dried and sold to the public.

By this time, I had eaten seaweed countless times and liked it, but I had no idea how it was caught. I was really intrigued to see how soft and brownish they look when fresh.

    homigot
    My first Homigot trip

What is in the Homigot museum?

As soon as you alight from your car in the large parking lot, you have to walk to Homigot Sunrise Square. From there, everyone can see two big sculptures of a human hand. The right hand is in the middle of the sea, and the left hand is on the opposite side of the shore. They both symbolize harmony between humanity and society.

Just beside the beach, there is a lighthouse and a museum. These are some of the highlights of Homigot.  During one of my trips, my friends and I spent a lot of time inside the museum, reading and looking at old artifacts of Korean history. It was great to see pictures from pre-war, war, and post-war. The differences are huge and incomparable. I remember just saying wow in surprise almost all the time as I took walks around the large displayed items.

    How was my second trip?

I am not the kind who likes to go to the same place twice. I always say its a waste of my time and money. But when I got offered this free trip by my African friends, I couldn’t bring myself to deny. This was at no cost of mine except my smile. I gladly hopped into their car and was ready for the exploit again. I hadn’t had enough of this beautiful beach hotspot.

In this trip, we went to the top of the largest building and enjoyed the view of the whole area. I remember the fresh air was so strong I thought it will root out my hair from my scar. That was in September 2018, so the Spring was just beginning. Though the sun was bright in the skin, the heat rays weren’t so voilent on our bodies.

    second Homigot trip
    My second Homigot trip

    Can you eat at Homigot?

That was the first question that popped into my mind when I had to leave very early with friends to visit Homigot for the first time. I wondered if, after my tour, there would be something to bite and relax with. Amazingly, there was too much for me to enjoy.

There is a line of orange tents at the far end. They are called ‘Pocha’ in  Korean. This is a small tent-like food cart where snacks or food are sold. My Korean friends said the best menu was Woul Nyu’s Seafood Pocha. There, they sell spicy seafood ramen and the famous Korean pancakes.

Since they put in a generous amount of fresh seashells, cuttlefish, and seasonal seafood, the taste is unique and delicious. Though the Pocha has only nine tables and can accommodate a maximum of thirty customers, everyone can eat. I suggest you start your lunch earlier rather than waiting in line, as I saw some people wait for almost an hour. My friends and I took snacks and had picnics, so we didn’t have to wait or spend a lot of time and money here.

Generally, the cost of food ranges from five thousand to fifty thousand Korean won. That doesn’t mean everyone can’t have a taste of Homigot food. A tasty plate of ramen can cost five thousand won ($4) while a bigger seafood pancake will cost you fifteen thousand Korean won ($13)

Are you interested in eating snow crabs? There are restaurants all over the area where you can try them. However, they are seasonal. So you can be sure to let your taste buds rejoice if you go there between November – April.

    My last Homigot visit

This trip was one of the longest and most fun. My friends from Seoul came to visit me in Pohang and I couldn’t resist not showing them the beautiful sunrise place. I admit we went there late that day because of the time wasted at bus stops but we were still able to laugh at ourselves for miscalculating the time and enjoyed the day regardless. It was a bright sunny day with the ocean view as blue as the color can be. Though we took a short time to sit on the large concrete blocks at the edge of the ocean, it was a few hours of just resting after school.

This day was special because we were able to see countless white birds enjoying the ocean like us. They seem to galavant the ocean top without drowing as they walk ontop of the water or seat on rock.

my friends and I at Homigot
My friends and I on my final trip

By February 2019 when I last went there, the reputable steel company- Posco had built a beautiful art wall made of steel. It was a large surface perfect for pictures. We had so much fun imitating the designed people movements and just enjoying the winter evening sunset.

In all the trips, I was happy taking pictures infront of the massive street clock. I always looked at it and imagined starting the new year there. I heard there is always a count down on the 31st of December to break the new year, but was never fortunate to begin the year that way. That should be fascinating to watch the final thick and hear the cheers.

Whether we were pretending to be friends with the small human statutue or just strolling around lost in the crowd, this was a perfect relaxation for us.

    pohang tour
    Pohang tour

End your trip at Mocambo Café

Before you call it a day, you can take a stop near Guryongpo Beach and enjoy time at the rooftop Mocambo café. The ocean view from here cannot be described in words. Whether you are swallowing fruity ice cream or sipping on brewed coffee, you will enjoy this spacious facility. The ocean water here is very clean and clear, making it perfect even for foot dipping.

In conclusion, I cannot promise this is all you will see if you go to Homigot now. The Korean government, via all city councils, is intentional about developing their cities. I cannot claim to assure you what you will enjoy there in 2023, but I can almost guarantee you will have more to see. There is always innovation, and I know there must have been a few in the past few years.

Please comment and tell me about your experience.

5 Disadvantages of Traveling Solo as an African woman

Traveling solo as an African woman poses many challenges, as it is for anyone. In my earlier post on the advantages of traveling solo as an African woman, l promised to discuss the disadvantages. Here, l spill out the beans on the other side.

Before we unveil what l think about this topic from my personal experience, l need to remark that, l couldn’t find anything on this topic for African women. It seems every blog l quickly read had the same points, just with different headings. Somehow, l found that repetitive and almost untrue. I am not here to condemn others but to share my views on the real perspective of traveling.

In my opinion, after traveling alone and with a group to several countries, l can say the disadvantages are mostly the same. However, there are slight differences. So l will use this blog to debunk both aspects instead of secluding it only for solo female travelers. This will give a general overview of traveling.

    1. You cannot share the cost of certain activities when traveling solo

The cost of activities during travel can vary, and this applies to both group and solo female travelers. In certain instances, activities may seem expensive for solo travelers when compared to group prices. For example, an amusement park might offer a group rate of $70 but charge $40 for a solo ticket. At first glance, this difference may appear costly.

However, the perception of expenses depends on individual circumstances and financial planning. If you’ve thoroughly researched the activities you wish to partake in and budgeted accordingly before your trip, the cost may not be an issue. Properly estimating your expenses and setting a budget can alleviate concerns about higher individual prices.

Ultimately, financial preparation plays a vital role in managing costs while traveling solo or in a group. By planning ahead and understanding your financial limitations, you can better appreciate and enjoy the experiences without feeling burdened by the expenses.

With prudent financial management, you can make the most of your travel adventures, regardless of whether you’re traveling alone or with a group.

Another reason I used the word “certain” is because there are places or activities without group prices. It is typical but not common. I don’t recall ever seeing a group price to watch a movie at a cinema. Prices here are usually for individuals. Either way, anyone can enjoy any activity, whether alone or with a group.

    2. You cannot try different foods when you are traveling solo

You are absolutely correct. The point about trying different meals and experiencing the local cuisine while traveling is not limited to group travelers; it applies equally to solo travelers. In fact, solo travelers may have more flexibility in exploring various dishes since they can choose their dining preferences without the need for group consensus.

By venturing into local eateries, street food stalls, or even buffet restaurants, solo travelers have the freedom to sample multiple dishes from the country they are visiting.

Buffet restaurants, as you mentioned, are an excellent way to taste a wide array of traditional delicacies in one sitting. This allows solo travelers to immerse themselves in the local culinary culture and savor the diverse flavors the country has to offer.

Furthermore, solo travelers often interact more with locals, which can enhance their dining experiences. Conversing with restaurant staff, fellow patrons, or street food vendors may lead to valuable food recommendations or insights into the country’s culinary traditions. This interpersonal aspect of solo travel can add richness to the overall gastronomic adventure.

So, the idea that solo travelers miss out on experiencing different meals or the local cuisine is not accurate. On the contrary, solo travel provides ample opportunities to savor a wide variety of dishes and fully enjoy the culinary delights of the destination. It’s all about embracing the culinary journey with an open mind and a curious palate, regardless of whether you’re traveling alone or in a group.

    My experience with food

The only aspect l can remark for this is, in some countries especially in Asia they live in communities. Threfore, they do a lot of things as groups. I remember in South Korea, there were some restaurants you cannot eat alone. The style of the chairs and the quantity of the food served for a high amount cannot be consumed and paid by one person.

Once l entered a restaurant, sat down waiting for the waiter to come with the menu.

When she finally came with her warm, thankful smile, her first question was whether l was alone. I found the question rather weird because l thought anyone should be able to eat alone anywhere. In my mind, l thought maybe she was asking because l was a foreigner. Also, maybe she assumed l was on a short trip.

I smiled back and replied in my broken Korean that l lived in the country. But today, I just wanted to try that famous traditional meal (l don’t remember the name now).

She again shook her head with a broad smile, as Koreans do when you speak their language.

Then, now with more confidence, she repeated her question again in Korean with more detail because she knew l understood. I also replied, l wanted just to see the menu and eat. Finally, after a few seconds, she told me, this restaurant is only for groups. I laughed at my ignorance. She laughed too but told me, why she was asking.

She didn’t want to assume l had friends who were joining me.

Food on a buffet table at a restaurant
The table of meals at a Ghanian buffet restaurant in Accra. I enjoyed going almost 4 rounds as I salvored every bit of some traditional meals.

Why did the waitress ask me that question?

In Korea, it is common for colleagues, families, or friends to reserve or plan to visit a restaurant, but they all arrive at different times.

So she felt maybe l came first and had others who will join me later.  Within a second, she was kind to show me the menu and the price.

It is then that she politely told me not to waste my money on food l will not finish. I could take it as takeaway, l thought, but that amount 50,000 Won almost $45 is good money to last me a week’s meal. I gratefully appreciated her and happily left.

That situation above was rare. There are countless restaurants scattered around the street where anyone can eat the same meal. In fact, l didn’t know there were group restaurants until that day. ln summary, l am saying you can try anything you want to eat as long as you have the finances and time to do so. Somehow, this is not a disadvantage, as many bloggers claimed.

    3. You can’t take good photographs when traveling alone

The assertion that travel is synonymous with solely taking selfies is indeed relative and not entirely accurate.

Numerous bloggers propagate this belief, suggesting that travel experiences solely revolve around capturing selfies.

Contrary to this notion, the reality is that travelers can derive immense enjoyment from their journeys while also capturing as many photographs as they desire.

In fact, selfies offer a unique perspective – the chance to capture oneself in close proximity to the captivating backdrop, an element that can add a touch of humor to the experience.

Reflecting on my years of travel, I’ve accumulated a collection of diverse photographs, including selfies and those capturing various moods.

It’s worth acknowledging that there exists no universal decree mandating personal presence in every travel photograph. Such a notion is nonexistent.

In truth, the compulsion to feature in every image can inadvertently detract from the true essence of the activity.

Striving to maintain an omnipresent presence in photos may inadvertently overshadow the joy inherent in the experience itself.

So, the idea that travel necessitates the constant inclusion of oneself in every picture is unfounded. This perspective does not hold sway.

Rather, it is the spontaneous moments and genuine enjoyment of the journey that truly define the travel experience, whether one chooses to be a part of every frame or not.

How do we solve this problem?

To debunk the prevalent notion, I’ve found that the concern of taking photos while traveling solo as a female isn’t as dire as it’s often portrayed.

Personally, I’ve developed a strategy that effectively addresses this issue. Instead of relying solely on selfies, I frequently approach fellow travelers or individuals in the vicinity for assistance in capturing pictures.

The results have been both satisfactory and delightful, with my smiles perfectly captured.

The key lies in prudent discernment of the environment and targeted interactions.

When part of a guided tour, such as in a park, I initiate light conversations with various participants.

My focus tends to gravitate towards fellow solo female travelers, as I establish a friendly rapport. This groundwork enables me to comfortably approach them and request assistance with photography.

Their readiness to oblige, often accompanied by tips on posing, makes the process enjoyable and rewarding.

    Sarah taking pictures of herself

    Who to ask for help

Naturally, I avoid soliciting help from married or single men to prevent any misconceptions.

I’ve also encountered situations where strangers, typically male, extend offers to take my photo as an avenue to initiate conversation.

While I’m cautious, I don’t decline such offers. Instead, I retrieve my phone promptly after the snapshot to avoid further engagement, as I opt not to share my contact details.

However, the scenario shifts when navigating busy streets, where soliciting unfamiliar individuals for photography might be risky due to safety concerns.

Vigilance becomes paramount in such instances, as I rely on my instincts to gauge the appropriateness of seeking a free photographer for my shots.

To encapsulate, my collection of travel memories housed in the Google Photos app encompasses a blend of selfies and portraits taken by others.

The takeaway is that the perceived obstacle of capturing images while traveling solo as a female is surmountable through calculated interactions and astute judgment.

    4. Getting sick while traveling solo

The concerns of a solo female traveler are indeed valid, particularly when it comes to health issues, especially while lodged in accommodations.

Depending on where one is staying, various challenges can arise if illness strikes. The choice of accommodation, whether a hotel, Airbnb, or apartment, plays a pivotal role in determining the available support.

For those staying in hotels, the daily housekeeping routine offers an avenue to seek assistance in case of illness. During a routine cleaning visit, guests can reach out for help, particularly if they’re unable to move around.

In some cases, particularly in larger hotels, reception services can be contacted. They are often capable of arranging for medical attention, including the provision of a doctor or nurse who can evaluate the guest’s health directly in their room.

This approach provides a relatively straightforward solution to addressing health challenges in hotel settings.

The scenario shifts when considering accommodations such as Airbnb rentals or apartments. In these instances, communication with the host becomes crucial.

Many hosts, not all but a substantial number, are responsive and accommodating. If illness strikes, engaging in communication via the app or the private contacts provided by the host can yield positive outcomes.

Some hosts may even take the initiative to visit their guests at the accommodation to ensure their well-being during their stay.

In essence, the choice of lodging plays a role in determining the avenues available for seeking medical assistance while traveling solo.

Whether through hotel staff, reception services, or host communication, there are means to address health challenges and garner the necessary support to navigate through illness while enjoying one’s journey.

How to handle such a situation

During my stay in an Airbnb accommodation in Uganda, I was fortunate to have a host who happened to be my next-door neighbor.

Our proximity allowed for regular interactions, and I found comfort in the fact that I could easily reach out to him through WhatsApp whenever assistance was required. Additionally, the presence of a gateman throughout the day provided an accessible source for answering queries.

While some hosts might have resided at a distance, they often made provisions to have a caretaker on-site, ensuring a sense of security and assistance.

These arrangements ensured that I never felt isolated or alone during my travels.

The willingness of hosts and caretakers to lend a hand with directions, recommendations for local attractions, and even medical assistance provided a reassuring backdrop. The notion that they would be unwilling to extend help if illness struck seemed unfounded. Thus, the sense of community and willingness to offer support effectively addressed health-related concerns.

Moreover, equipped with health insurance and modern conveniences like ride-hailing apps, accessing medical care became hassle-free.

Summoning a taxi through platforms like Uber or similar services facilitated swift transportation to a hospital if needed.

This process mirrored the efficiency one might experience in their home country. Nursing staff were generally amiable and accommodating, more than willing to assist lone travelers who found themselves under the weather.

In summary, my experience illuminated the extent to which thoughtful accommodations, proximity to hosts, and the availability of caretakers contribute to a sense of support and safety for solo travelers.

Couple this with readily accessible transportation options and health insurance, and addressing health concerns becomes a manageable endeavor even when away from home.

    5. Safety concerns when traveling solo

This point was consistently featured in every blog I came across, and I can’t deny its significance.

Some bloggers advised women to fabricate having travel companions if questioned.

Personally, I’ve refrained from such falsehoods because I believe that the truth can be easily uncovered, potentially putting me at greater risk due to potential monitoring or stalking. Honesty, in my opinion, tends to evoke sympathy rather than harm.

In my experience, every time I honestly mentioned traveling alone and asked for help, people readily extended assistance.

I’ve never encountered any direct threats or attacks solely because I was a solo African woman.

    How to handle security worries

Certainly, I’m meticulous about not venturing out too late at night. I don’t engage in clubbing or extend my outings past 8 pm, particularly in unfamiliar areas where returning to my lodging might pose challenges.

To be candid, my primary concern centers around drivers, be they taxi or motorcycle, who are rumored to exploit passengers by leading them to remote locations, subjecting them to theft or even assault.

To thwart this potential threat, I adopt a proactive approach before even purchasing a flight ticket.

This involves extensive research, delving into vlogs, and scouring countless blogs.

It’s worth noting that every country harbors areas with a reputation for being unruly or hazardous, whether it’s a city or a specific district within one.

Given this reality, being vigilant becomes a paramount principle. My strategy involves leveraging travel apps such as Uber, Bolt, and others, contingent on the specific country. These apps provide a measure of security, knowing that my movements are being tracked.

To further bolster my safety, I input my destination into Google Maps, allowing me to monitor routes and detect any deviations.

There have been instances where I’ve encountered less-than-honest drivers who took unnecessarily lengthy routes to inflate the time and fare. In response, I’ve made it a practice to provide candid customer reviews, highlighting any grievances.

Fortunately, the majority of drivers have upheld their professionalism and integrity.

For added convenience and security, I’ve connected my credit card to these apps, facilitating seamless payments upon booking.

This prudent approach not only streamlines the process but also contributes to an overall safer travel experience.

    What is the solution?

In certain countries, I rely on local buses or taxis for transportation, but I take the initiative to discuss the transportation fares with my host before leaving my lodging.

This strategy eliminates the need for bargaining and ensures that I’m well-informed.

Interestingly, in the black African countries I’ve visited, my presence as a foreigner often goes unnoticed. Occasionally, my identity becomes apparent when I mispronounce a destination in the local language, but this hasn’t led to fare discrepancies. The rates remain consistent because I’m knowledgeable about the usual prices.

In situations like these, I engage in light conversation, express appreciation for their country, and even inject some humor by sharing my culture shock experiences.

This approach tends to foster a positive and friendly atmosphere, resulting in enjoyable rides that conclude on a cheerful note.

How can you prevent being robbed?

Lastly, the issue of pickpockets demands vigilant consideration, as they pose a risk in various locations and are particularly opportunistic with foreigners.

To counter this threat, I’ve adopted the practice of carrying a compact handbag that I can wear across my chest, allowing it to rest securely on my shoulder.

I steer clear of carrying it solely on one shoulder, as this vulnerable position might expose me to the potential dangers of theft. There’s a possibility of thieves slicing the strap or snatching the bag from behind in a swift maneuver.

My approach includes keeping my phone nestled inside the bag unless I need it to swiftly capture a captivating scene.

This measure not only safeguards my belongings but also ensures that I’m prepared to respond effectively in case of any unexpected encounters with pickpockets.

Be cautious of what you wear when you travel solo

Another measure I take to avoid drawing attention is by dressing modestly and not wearing ostentatious or valuable clothing or jewelry. I opt for simplicity and ensure that my demeanor includes a friendly smile for everyone I encounter.

This affable disposition has often contributed to a sense of peace during my travels.

Maintaining awareness of my surroundings is a constant priority when I’m traveling alone. In terms of financial security, I’ve developed a strategy where I divide my money and primarily use my bank card only when it’s absolutely necessary.

Carrying two wallets is part of this approach—one for daily use and the other to safeguard larger sums.

Depending on the circumstances, I may carry both wallets or intentionally leave the one with significant cash behind to resist impulsive spending.

The underlying principle is that even if one wallet were to be stolen, I’d still have a backup.

Another valuable tip is to avoid exchanging all your currency. Instead, I carry a limited amount of cash and rely on ATMs to withdraw more if needed.

Counting a substantial sum of money in public can inadvertently attract unwanted attention and pose a potential risk of theft.

Adhering to the adage “Do not tempt the devil to tempt you” serves as a sound reminder to be cautious and not unknowingly invite trouble.

A man installing a cctv camera
    safety concerns

    How to solve accommodation theft

To ensure the security of my belongings, I always travel with padlocks when staying at hotels or Airbnbs.

This precautionary measure allows me to safeguard my valuables by locking them in a bag and placing the keys in a small wallet.

Having encountered a situation where my belongings appeared to have been moved, I’ve learned to leave only non-essential items outside, granting me peace of mind while I’m away on tours.

Moreover, to create a secure environment, I coordinate with my hosts to arrange room cleaning when I’m present. I specify a time frame—such as 1-3 pm—during which I’ll be in the room.

This approach might seem stringent, but I believe that most individuals would think twice about theft in the presence of the occupant. Hosts have been accommodating and understanding of my request, enabling the cleaning staff to perform their duties while I’m there.

This practice not only fosters a worry-free environment but also encourages positive interactions.

I make it a point to assure my hosts that they needn’t concern themselves with cleaning, as I take responsibility for maintaining the space.

I treat the accommodation as if it were my own and uphold hygiene and sanitation standards.

While I occasionally request cleaning assistance on days when I seek respite from my tourism activities, I generally prioritize keeping the space tidy and well-kept, just as I found it.

What to do to avoid sexual abuse

To sum up, I believe there aren’t any inherent disadvantages to traveling solo, regardless of gender.

While concerns about safety, especially regarding sexual crimes, are valid, responsible choices and cautious behavior play a pivotal role in mitigating such risks.

It’s important to acknowledge that unfortunate incidents, including sexual crimes, can occur in various settings.

However, it’s equally crucial to note that certain behaviors and choices can increase vulnerability.

Engaging in excessive drinking with strangers at clubs, losing awareness of one’s surroundings, or venturing into unfamiliar places can elevate the chances of being exposed to risky situations.

Moreover, it’s essential to recognize that anyone, regardless of gender, can face potential threats while traveling.

In the context of rising awareness about LGBTQ+ issues, it’s worth mentioning that men can also become targets of sexual assault.

Ultimately, safety hinges on personal responsibility and awareness.

Being cautious, avoiding risky behaviors, and being aware of emergency contact information, including local police departments, can contribute to a safer travel experience.

While no approach can provide an absolute guarantee of immediate response, prioritizing caution and responsible decisions significantly minimizes the likelihood of encountering dangerous situations.

What else can you do to ensure your security while traveling solo?

In preparation for my solo travels, I consistently conduct online research to gather insights from fellow travelers about specific cities.

Prior to booking my flight, one crucial step is to tap into the wealth of knowledge shared through others’ traveling solo experiences.

Ensuring my safety is paramount, so I often engage in conversations with friends who reside in the countries I plan to visit.

These discussions prove invaluable as they provide firsthand perspectives and local insights.

Among my initial inquiries, I prioritize understanding the most suitable areas for accommodation. While online searches can provide a plethora of options, I’m aware that certain neighborhoods might be less secure.

To navigate this, I leverage my network of friends and ask them to compile a list of safe locales and recommendations for secure lodging.

This approach not only enhances my safety but also offers a level of comfort knowing I’m choosing accommodations endorsed by those with local knowledge.

In certain instances, I’ve been fortunate to stay with these friends, which has enriched my travel experience.

Additionally, their connections often extend to acquaintances in other cities, enabling me to tap into a broader network for insights and advice.

This collaborative approach to gathering information equips me with a comprehensive understanding of potential destinations and empowers me to make informed decisions that prioritize my security.

    Where to lodge?

Another essential aspect I thoroughly consider when booking accommodation on Airbnb is the presence of CCTV cameras on the premises.

During my selection process, I meticulously examine the listing’s photos, paying close attention to any images showcasing the existence of security cameras.

I also make it a point to thoroughly read through reviews from previous guests, as these insights can provide valuable information about the safety measures in place.

One reassuring feature that puts my mind at ease is the presence of a gate and the mention of a gateman responsible for controlling access to the lodge.

Knowing that there are physical security measures and personnel monitoring entry adds a layer of security to my stay.

Keeping my family well-informed while traveling solo is a practice I prioritize. I understand the importance of regular communication for their peace of mind.

To achieve this, I take the initiative to purchase a local SIM card upon arrival in a new country.

This enables me to have reliable access to mobile data beyond just relying on hotel Wi-Fi. With my phone connected, I consistently send updates to my sister via WhatsApp, detailing my whereabouts and how I’m faring.

This regular communication not only alleviates any concerns she may have but also serves as a safety measure.

I go the extra mile by sharing screenshots of my Airbnb booking or providing her with the name of the hotel I’m staying at. This information can serve as evidence of my location should any unexpected circumstances arise.

By maintaining open communication and sharing key details, I ensure that my family is informed and can provide assistance if needed.

My secret 2 cents on traveling solo

I hold the perspective that embarking on solo travel carries an inherent element of risk, one that is embraced by those who possess an adventurous spirit and a willingness to venture into the unfamiliar.

To mitigate these uncertainties, I adopt a practice of starting my day with prayer, seeking guidance and protection from God as I navigate through my travels.

Just as I would do when I’m in my home country, I dedicate each day to Him, acknowledging that my life is a precious gift bestowed by Him, and only He has the power to safeguard it for as long as He deems fit.

    Final thoughts about traveling solo

While I dismiss the fear of untimely death, I maintain a sense of caution and avoid placing myself in unnecessarily dangerous situations.

Above all, I’m driven by a profound belief that my life holds a purpose. In my encounters with intimidating scenarios, I’ve steadfastly relied on my faith, trusting that the Creator of my life has orchestrated a meaningful path for me.

This conviction empowers me to face any challenge with unwavering assurance.

In essence, entrusting my journey to God and wholeheartedly embracing His sovereignty has freed me from the fear of travel.

I firmly believe that adverse circumstances can befall anyone, anywhere, but my unshakable faith in Christ’s love and protection reassures me that I am a child of God.

Consequently, only what aligns with His divine plan can unfold in my life. Even in the face of adversity, His goodness remains constant, and I find solace in the knowledge that His presence can bring healing, restoration, and an opportunity for spiritual growth.

Armed with the assurance of Psalm 91, I embark on my travels with a heart at peace and a mind unburdened by fear, finding joy and fulfillment in the journey.

Black African Woman: Advantages to Travel Solo

Finding another black African woman who shares my love for traveling has been a rare occurrence.

Back in Cameroon, the idea of jetting off to explore the world wasn’t a common pursuit. In my city, encountering someone who has intentionally traveled to multiple countries solely for tourism is quite unheard of.

Many who venture abroad tend to settle in one destination for education or work. Some have explored nearby European countries due to the convenience of the Schengen zone. However, extensive leisure travel isn’t a prevalent practice among Cameroonians.

Some might journey to neighboring places like Nigeria for business purposes.

Am I an exception? Absolutely. I possess a deep passion for traveling. My journeys across 14 different countries have been incredibly rewarding, and I eagerly anticipate exploring even more destinations. Each trip has presented unique challenges, often catching me by surprise.”

After reading several articles of solo women or black American female travelers, there weren’t any about black African women.

The undeniable fact is that traveling alone is different based on our nationalities. People all around the world are familiar with Americans, Europeans, etc, visiting their countries, so they get slightly surprised when they see a non-South African.

What is my experience as a black African woman?

As a black African woman traveling alone, I’ve encountered situations that offer unique insights. Sharing these experiences aims to shed light on an important issue, not promote hate.

Some people, knowingly or not, treat those from presumed underdeveloped countries as lesser. Despite education on respect, some harbor prejudiced views unknowingly.

Racism persists subtly, often only realized through personal experiences. While not encountered in all countries, challenges tied to ethnicity have arisen.

Sharing these experiences aims to raise awareness, foster conversations on understanding, acceptance, and compassion, regardless of backgrounds.

My travels span Asia and Africa, including neighboring countries during my 6-year stay in South Korea.

Advantages of solo travel will be explored here, focusing on the positives.

I’ll address navigation for black African women in a future post. Here’s what to expect when embarking on solo adventures.

    1. You will feel free

Does this title sound unusual? Embracing familiarity while traveling in Africa.

By “freedom” here, I mean you won’t feel like a complete stranger. This applies particularly if you travel within the African continent to non-white (Northern African) countries.

For instance, during my trip to Nigeria, I blended in effortlessly, almost as if I hadn’t left home.

Common Nigerian pidgin filled the streets, and as I spoke my Cameroonian pidgin, communication flowed seamlessly. Ghana, too, felt stress-free; English was our shared language, and their progress was admirable.

In all the African countries I’ve explored, my skin color proved advantageous. I was treated with the same respect upon sight.

While my Cameroonian English accent sometimes gave me away, it rarely led to lesser treatment.

People often showed curiosity about my African origins, sparking conversations at markets and on streets.

Navigating Challenges and Embracing Culture While Traveling

Unfortunately, my foreign accent sometimes led to locals assuming I was unfamiliar with their country, resulting in overcharging by taxi drivers, bike riders, and market vendors. However, I’ve devised a solution: before going out, I seek local transport fare information from my Airbnb or hotel host.

This empowers me to confidently negotiate using regular rates locals pay.

This strategy has been successful, as they can’t contest the rates I cite.

This practice of charging higher fares to foreigners is common worldwide, so it wasn’t entirely unexpected.

This sense of freedom extends to food and culture. I fondly remember the thrill of discovering plantains in Uganda.

Cooking and savoring a familiar dish filled me with joy, momentarily easing my longing for home.

Embracing aspects of my own culture while traveling has truly enriched my experiences.

    2. You will get support

Traveling to foreign countries often comes with hopes of warm welcomes and support. While such experiences do occur, they can be complex and two-sided.

During my journeys across Asia, I observed a particularly positive reception as a black African woman in some countries.

In the Philippines, for instance, I felt like a celebrity. Their genuinely impressed and curious stares were endearing.

I was welcomed with open arms, and locals enthusiastically engaged with me, asking about my homeland and inviting me to share meals in their homes.

Heartfelt gestures like giving me gifts and writing thoughtful letters made me feel embraced and accepted.

These connections led to lasting friendships that transcended any differences in skin color. In their company, I found a sense of belonging that made my travels feel like finding a home away from home.

Why should you share your culture?

Traveling through various Asian countries, I encountered differing reactions to my presence as a black African woman.

While some Asians were hesitant to engage with strangers, particularly those who looked different, I faced instances where seeking help on the streets yielded no assistance. It seemed that certain locals were more receptive to non-black foreigners than to me, and while I couldn’t fully understand their motivations, I sensed an underlying reluctance.

This experience, though challenging, offered valuable insights into cross-cultural interactions and the impact of stereotypes.

I realized that some of their behavior stemmed from misconceptions about black Africans, shaped by media portrayals of poverty and despair.

This taught me the significance of dispelling stereotypes and forming authentic connections across borders.

I learned that empathy and understanding can bridge gaps created by ignorance, allowing us to connect on a deeper level despite our diverse backgrounds.

    3. You will become more self-confident as a black African woman

The impact of travel on self-confidence is a debated topic. Some claim that confidence is inherent in Sanguines and Cholerics, while others argue that Melancholics and Phlegmatics benefit more from such experiences.

Regardless of personality type, I’ve found that my journeys as an African woman have significantly boosted my self-assurance.

You might wonder how this transformation occurs. Every encounter during my travels has nurtured courage within me.

Growing up, helping others was a norm in my community. Yet, while exploring new places, I’ve had to proactively seek assistance.

Despite my preparations, unexpected challenges arose. I realized that solutions depended on my willingness to ask questions and seek help.

These experiences taught me assertiveness and the value of taking initiative, fostering greater self-confidence as I tackled diverse challenges on my journeys.

What are some lessons I have learned?

Emerging from my comfort zone and engaging with strangers was a daunting task initially, yet I compelled myself to do so during my journeys.

This endeavor has resulted in increased confidence and positivity in my interactions.

Astonishingly, in seven out of ten instances when I sought guidance, people readily extended their help.

These informal exchanges have honed my cross-cultural communication skills, proving invaluable.

Furthermore, my travels have instilled in me the art of approaching people with an open mind, not solely when I require assistance.

I’ve grown more affable and empathetic, realizing that a warm smile and a simple conversation often pave the way for meaningful connections.

Being receptive entails being approachable and willing to converse, offering me profound insights into diverse cultures.

By bravely asking questions and displaying genuine curiosity about others, I’ve unlocked a wealth of knowledge about their lives and traditions.

My expeditions have widened my perspectives, deepened my global comprehension, and fostered a more inclusive and understanding outlook, enriching my approach to forging connections.

    4. You can share your African identity

Undoubtedly, purchasing that flight ticket can open doors to remarkable opportunities, my fellow traveler.

You might question how this unfolds. Particularly in non-African nations, I’ve often been mistaken for a black American due to geographical misconceptions, a trend notably prevalent in several Asian countries I’ve explored.

Yet, I embrace these instances with delight, using them as platforms to converse about Africa.

While I proudly announce my Cameroonian identity, I also utilize the opportunity to showcase the diversity and uniqueness of the entire African continent.

Through my elegantly adorned African fabric attire, jewelry, and shoes, I narrate the tale of my region without uttering a word.

Frequently, my distinctive attire prompts interactions, sparking captivating dialogues.

With enthusiasm, I leverage these encounters to share insights about Cameroon, my culture, and my people.

Each of us can exude pride in our roots and boldly express our identities.

As an African woman, I am steadfast in seizing every avenue to introduce the world to our story. Come alongside me, and let us jointly celebrate and disseminate the opulence of our African heritage worldwide.

    African woman

    Why should you travel?

Absolutely, you’ve eloquently captured the essence. Traveling, especially as an African woman, affords a unique chance to serve as an informal cultural ambassador of your homeland. Embracing this role empowers us to illuminate our traditions, heritage, and diversity to a global audience.

People often hold admiration for different cultures, and by narrating our narratives and encounters, we can chip away at the ignorance that fuels stereotypes and racism.

Undoubtedly, racism often springs from a lack of understanding and misconceptions.

A potent method to educate and shape respectful interactions is to confidently and proudly articulate our origins and background.

Through this, we challenge any misconceived notions about black African women.

Additionally, a notable edge of being a lone African woman traveler lies in dispelling the misguided belief that we are uneducated, marginalized, or subject to early marriages.

While it’s true that certain areas in Africa may still hold onto traditional customs limiting girls’ education or advocating early unions, the majority of Africans highly value education and equality.

Our independent and self-assured travels serve as a counter to these stereotypes, highlighting the diversity and determination of African women.

Our actions resonate louder than words, and as solo travelers, we shatter barriers, exemplifying that black African women are accomplished, educated, and empowered individuals, dispelling archaic preconceptions.

How do some people consider African women?

It’s astonishing that even in the 21st century, questions like whether all African women are illiterate still arise. I encountered a similar situation when a school friend in Korea asked me this question.

The surprise on my face mirrored his astonishment. It’s almost comical, isn’t it? I simply replied, “Who am I?” leaving him speechless.

He quickly realized that his question was baseless and irrelevant. Overwhelmed with embarrassment, he genuinely apologized for his misguided assumption about the African continent.

Instead of showcasing my multiple Master’s degrees or delving into elaborate explanations, I used the moment to enlighten him about Africa and Cameroon. I encouraged him to do a quick online search whenever possible.

This encounter prompted me to ponder the lack of awareness about Africa and its people, given its limited inclusion in many educational curricula.

Consequently, many individuals remain uninformed about the region, relying on hearsay and preconceptions.

However, some are truly curious and willing to learn. This is where being a solo African woman traveler becomes an ideal way to share our narratives and educate others about our reality and the depth of our continent.

Through these meaningful interactions, we can dismantle stereotypes and foster deeper understanding and appreciation for Africa and its people.

Did you know people don’t think you are poor when you travel as an African woman?

This is a crucial point to consider. Traveling does require financial resources, and this often leads people to respect those who can afford it.

During my trips abroad, I noticed that the notion of poverty seemed to dissipate when people saw me.

While I can’t be certain of how they perceived my financial status, it was clear they didn’t view me as economically disadvantaged.

Undoubtedly, financial constraints hinder many Africans from traveling, with low purchasing power being a significant obstacle in some areas. This reality limits travel opportunities for some of my friends. Yet, it’s worth acknowledging that life abroad can also be costly.

Nevertheless, as a single black African woman traveling solo, I’ve observed that I’m often treated with more respect.

People recognize my ability to finance my journey, eradicating assumptions of dependency, exploitation, or criminal intent. Instead, they see an empowered woman exploring the world on her own terms.

Being a solo African woman traveler highlights our resilience, determination, and capacity to seize control of our lives. It challenges stereotypes and showcases that we aren’t defined by poverty or constraints.

Rather, we’re empowered individuals enriching our lives through travel, while simultaneously dismantling barriers and reshaping perceptions about black African women.

    5. You will broaden your horizon for what’s possible as an African woman

How black Tanzanian women inspired me

The astonishment on my face was unforgettable as I observed women in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, breaking stones for construction.

It was a role I had never envisioned women partaking in. In my homeland of Cameroon, stone cracking was traditionally considered a male task, reserved for those with physical strength.

Contemplating the impressive houses in the city and the expenses of my accommodations, I recognized that these women were likely earning a substantial livelihood from their labor. Enduring physical demands and harsh weather, they provided for their families without hesitation.

This eye-opening encounter shattered my preconceptions and expanded my horizons, teaching me that our potential is boundless with determination.

While I might not pursue stone cracking as a profession, observing these women’s triumphs motivated me to be open to new endeavors and self-challenges.

If black African women like them could achieve such feats, then I too can strive for greatness with the right mindset and resolve.

Throughout my travels, I’ve encountered numerous inspiring instances of women transcending stereotypes and pursuing varied careers and passions.

Each encounter has bestowed valuable insights and broadened my perception of my own capabilities.

Hence, I share this to inspire you, a fellow black African woman, that your journey abroad will undoubtedly be enriching.

Travel will unveil a realm of potential and empower you to embrace your full capabilities.

Beyond local comparisons, a world of knowledge and experiences awaits you. So, take that leap, explore, and uncover the incredible woman you are destined to become.
