Venturing beyond Kigali, the capital of Rwanda, offers a glimpse into the country’s unique culture and history. Embark on a scenic 4–5 hour bus journey that unveils the Rwandan culture surprises hidden within this compact African nation.
For me, it was a solo expedition, opting to travel the tarred road into the lesser-known regions of Rwanda.
Nyanza, historically the nation’s heart, reveals a tale of battles and power struggles. Despite its size, the road leading to its core presents an unparalleled scenic view, with neatly aligned steep slopes covered in lush green grass.
The breathtaking scenery kept me engaged throughout the morning, despite the chilly winds that left my skin a bit drier.
The invigorating freshness of the breeze compensates for the coolness, offering a refreshing experience for all. Here’s what you can enjoy while exploring Nyanza.

What is special about the Rwandan culture?
Rwanda’s government has demonstrated a remarkable commitment to educating the next generation about their heritage.
A shining example of this effort is the “King’s Palace Museum,” a reconstructed traditional royal residence of the former king.
This museum showcases the nation’s history through its intricately designed thatched hut, resembling a beehive, and a concrete house depicting the impact of colonial powers and local Rwandan life.
Reflecting the historical instability of monarchies in Africa, Nyanza once served as a kingdom, accommodating a population of more than 2,000.
The distinctive architecture of their huts, as depicted in the accompanying image, tells a fascinating story of Rwanda’s past.

The thickness of the walls of these huts is indescribable. It required a lot of time to build. I can attest, traditional architecture remains the standard. Those old people were creative and smart.

In the rear of the expansive hut, an intriguing sight awaits: the long-horned Inyambo cattle, believed to be descendants of the king’s own herd.
These cattle are meticulously cared for, with their dedicated grazing field and cozy wooden barns for relaxation, all while basking in the warm sun.
However, the pinnacle of my visit was the enchanting experience of encountering these cattle. It might sound unbelievable, but these cows not only listen but also dance.
Yes, you read that right – they danced for me. With dedicated caretakers, these animals are treated with utmost attention and affection, even serenaded by their keepers.
Upon the arrival of a guest like me, the keeper offers a melodic Kinyarwanda song.
What ensued was truly extraordinary – the cows rose from their resting positions, swaying and moving as if they were in dance.
Witnessing this unique tradition come alive in such a mesmerizing way was a sight to behold and a memory I will forever cherish.
Rwandan culture
All the cows are big and elegant. They are said to hail from the wider Ankole breed. In those days, they played a fundamental role during ceremonies in honor of the king.
Exceptionally, they were decorated with rich jewelry. An uncommon thing to see.
And they were taught to listen to a trainer’s songs and follow his movements in a stately parade.
Preserving Tradition: Inyambo Cattle and Rwanda’s Monarchic Legacy
Though the monarchy era concluded in 1962 after Rwanda gained independence, the legacy of the monarchs and their lives endures as a captivating history lesson for both young Rwandans and curious tourists.
It’s truly commendable that the Rwanda Agriculture Board continues to breed and nurture the Inyambo cows, ensuring that the experience of their ancestors lives on for future generations.
With encouragement from our guide, I mustered the courage to touch one of the calves in the barn.
Its fur felt remarkably soft, an unexpected connection to Rwanda’s cultural heritage.
An intriguing revelation I encountered is that the distinctive horns of these cows symbolize Rwanda’s traditional dance style.
This detail had escaped my notice until now.
Following my visit, I observed several Rwandese cultural dance performances and recognized that the dancers elevate their hands gracefully in the air, harmonizing the movement with their rhythmic footsteps – a dance reminiscent of the magnificent horns of the Inyambo cows.

My visit to Nyanza allowed me to not only witness but also interact with ancient traditional artifacts.
As an African, much of what I saw wasn’t entirely surprising; however, the joy came from realizing that similar items exist in cultures around the world.
One particular experience that stood out was when I knelt down to grind on a large grinding stone.
For a moment, I felt a pang of hunger. While this might sound peculiar to those unfamiliar with the practice of using stones to grind food, the taste is distinctly different when we do.
Many Africans share the belief that the stone imparts an unexplainable flavor to the food, and I can’t help but acknowledge that notion.
Although it might seem rooted in superstition, I stand by this experience.
To this day, I use a stone to grind specific traditional Cameroonian spices before preparing certain meals.
While grinding mills with modern machines are commonplace, and home blenders are readily available, there are certain ingredients that retain their authenticity and essence when ground using the traditional method.

I was impressed by the wooden milk containers and their lids. The guide told me, those jugs could preserve the milk from the cows for days at a time. As for the ancient clay pots all displayed on the ground, I was glad they also use those. Some of their shapes were really different.
Rwandan culture experience: inside the palace hut
Stepping inside the hut, I was immediately struck by the darkness that enveloped the interior.
In contrast, the modern-day government has installed lighting for tourism purposes. It made me ponder how the older generations must have relied on local lighting methods.
During the guided tour, I had the chance to explore the various sections of the hut, each with its distinct purpose.
One area that particularly intrigued me was the King’s bedroom, a section elevated and adorned with a semi-gate-like structure resembling a blind-covered door.
The Guide explained that this sacred part of the palace was strictly off-limits to outsiders, and entry was only permitted upon a special request.
Even today, these traditional rules remain in place, preserving the sanctity of the space and offering a glimpse into the past.

To gain deeper insight into Rwandan culture, the Guide directed me to another section within the heart of the hut.
This area was regarded as the living room. It was a place where the King would host guests and engage in discussions with his family.
Adjacent to this space, there was a distinct area designated for the King’s wives. Interestingly, women were only allowed to be in the King’s presence if he specifically summoned them.
As I entered this space, I noticed the floor was adorned with mats, creating a cozy ambiance.
Seating myself on the mats, I embraced the opportunity to immerse myself in the experience.
Before entering, we had respectfully removed our shoes at the entrance. Its a sign of reverence for the palace and its traditions.

Just when I thought my journey was concluding as we left the hut, the Guide surprised me by mentioning another destination on the extensive premises.
Perched at the edge of the area was a modern concrete house, constructed by the Belgians in 1919 during Rwanda’s period as a League of Nations mandate territory.
While Belgium’s influence on Rwanda’s history is often associated with the negative impact of the genocide, it remains a significant part of the narrative.
This substantial white building, in stark contrast to the traditional hut, once served as the residence for the Belgians.
Inside, I discovered an array of modern furnishings like armchairs and carpets, reflecting a different era.
Today, it functions as a small museum, adorned with pictures on its walls that depict the historical relationship between the former Rwandan King and the Belgian administration.
Interestingly, visitors are restricted from taking photographs within the museum.
Hence, we walked through its various rooms while the Guide explained each space, including the bedroom, office, living room, and even the garage before we exited.
This site stands as a testament to the preservation of Rwandan culture.
It’s a place of learning, with schoolchildren frequently embarking on field trips to explore their nation’s history. On the day of my visit, I encountered a group of enthusiastic students eager to delve into their past.

The town boasted a diverse population, including approximately 1000 Arabs, 2500 Africans residing in or near Malindi, and an additional 2000 Africans in nearby plantations.
This eclectic amalgamation of races contributed to a vibrant and distinctive community, often characteristic of coastal areas.
Interestingly, I observed that some individuals exhibited facial features distinct from those I encountered in Nairobi, while their fair complexion hinted at their ancestral origins.
1. Tour the ancient Malindi ruins of the Gedi people.
Situated 94 km north of Malindi town, Gedi is a petite yet historically significant town nestled within Kenya’s coastal region.
Dating back to the 15th century, Gedi was once a bustling stone settlement masterfully crafted by the Swahili people.
The exceptional aspect lies in the fact that the entire town was painstakingly constructed using stones and rocks.
Thanks to the meticulous conservation efforts championed by the Kenyan government, a substantial portion of the original foundations remains intact to this day.
In the year 1927, Gedi’s remarkable expanse of 44 hectares was rightfully bestowed with the status of a historic monument.
Extensive excavations were undertaken, unearthing expansive sections of this ancient enclave.
Among the awe-inspiring discoveries were pillar tombs, a grand palace, and a resplendent mosque.
During its heyday, Gedi’s inhabitants were categorized based on their economic and social standings.
The sprawling ruins are encircled by two distinct walls. The inner wall serving as the enclave of the affluent elite.
The outer wall encompassed a sprawling 18-hectare expanse that included farmlands and plantations. It is presumed to be where the middle class erected mud and wattle houses.
Beyond the boundaries of the main walls, the lives of the peasants unfolded. Gedi’s intricate layout offers a vivid glimpse into its storied past and the diverse narratives of those who once thrived within its stone embrace.

What is in the Malindi ruins?
As the excavation work continued in Gedi, fascinating discoveries led to the naming of various areas based on what was found. One such discovery was a coral tomb adorned with exquisite Arabic script engraved with the date 1399. Just a few steps away from this dated tomb stood the majestic Great Mosque.
What amazed me the most was the “Well of the Great Mosque”. It’s an incredibly designed well that reached an impressive depth of 50 meters. It was believed to have been used for ablution, a ceremonial cleansing ritual.
As I explored further with the guide, I came across an intriguing sight on the other side of the mosque – an octagonal tall pillar tomb. The iman or priest probably lived here. priest.
Deeper into the forest, we encountered the presumed 15th-century palace. Here, the king would hold court and address women with marital problems separately from the men.
Along the way, I noticed chambers with no visible windows or doors. Historians speculate that these rooms might have been the secret storage places for the noblemen’s treasured gold and jewels. To access this hidden treasure, we saw a secret door cleverly concealed in the roof.
Walking through Gedi’s historical remnants was like stepping back in time, unraveling the mysteries of this ancient stone town. Every corner had a story to tell about the lives of those who once lived there.
Why is Gedi unique?
Gedi historic town is documented under public records as part of the National Monument since 1927. The National Museums of Kenya currently manages it.
Reports from UNESCO confirm it was the first site to be excavated in East Africa. Surprisingly, it remains the most intact of the preserved Swahili historic towns.
2. Take a history tour of the Gedi Ethnography gallery
Within the expansive premises of the Gedi ruins, there is a small gallery. It houses a treasure trove of ancient artifacts showcasing the life of the Malindi people. What’s truly remarkable is that you don’t have to travel elsewhere to explore this fascinating exhibit. It’s all conveniently located in one place.
Curious to glimpse the attire worn by these ancient people? Look no further, for this gallery has it all. From ancient clothes to displays of an old bed, chair, and baby cot used by the Swahili people. It made me step back in time and witness their way of life.
In transparent glass stands, there are delicate clay pots, intricate jewelry, and sharp swords. They give a glimpse of the skilled craftsmanship of that era. One of the most captivating exhibits is a small, elegantly designed ship. It offers a glimpse into the maritime culture of those days.
But perhaps the most surprising sight was the large whale skeleton occupying a single room. Standing there in awe, I couldn’t help but marvel at the grandeur of this majestic creature. I imagined the stories it might have witnessed over the ages. This tiny gallery truly encapsulates the rich and vibrant culture of the Swahili people. It provides a short yet captivating summary of their fascinating history.
Butterflies, renowned for their vibrant hues and captivating beauty, grace the Earth as some of the most colorful insects. In Kenya, the nation takes immense pride in the rich diversity of butterfly species that call its landscapes home.
Nestled near the Arabuko Sokoke forest along the coastal regions of Kenya, a community-driven enterprise known as “Kipepeo” has taken root.
The name, derived from Swahili, translates to “butterfly.” This remarkable endeavor goes beyond admiration and sustenance by actively supporting the livelihoods of the local populace residing in the vicinity of the forest.
A visit to Kipepeo unveils a modest yet bustling butterfly warehouse. It functions as a hub for the exchange of butterfly and moth pupae, along with an array of other live arthropods.
Intriguingly, this community initiative also involves the production and trade of honey and silk cloth. That further enhances the economic viability of the locals.
While I ventured into the hatching room for pupae, an awe-inspiring revelation awaited me.
These emerging live insects don’t merely bring joy to the local community; they travel afar, making their way to insect parks around the globe, captivating audiences worldwide!
What is the role of Kipepeo?
Playing a pivotal role, Kipepeo undertakes the essential task of orchestrating the production and marketing of these living insects.
Employing a strategy of training and vigilant oversight, they ensure the sustainable breeding. They cultivate insects right on the farms, utilizing wild parent stock.
Nestled adjacent to the historic Gedi ruins, Kipepeo stands as an extraordinary enterprise that seamlessly melds conservation. It’s a source of community empowerment, and a global admiration for the captivating allure of butterflies and other arthropods.
It’s genuinely heartening to witness how this endeavor not only uplifts the local populace. It also magnificently showcases Kenya’s innate natural treasures to an international audience.

After exploring the unique displays and seeing some beautiful butterflies moving around, I was impressed by the special photo zone. It transformed me into a butterfly.

The Gocheok Sky Dome located in a small neighborhood of Guro-gu in Seoul is a domed baseball stadium.
Baseball is one of the country’s favorite sports, so matches are a high form of entertainment, as fanatics will crowd the arena. Sky Dome is the home ballpark of KBO club Kiwoom Heroes.
Though the big hall-like stadium is completely covered on the top, it is primarily used for baseball and has a capacity for 16,744 spectators.
This beautifully designed structure was opened on 15 September 2015.
Beyond its role as a sports complex, this venue transforms into a concert epicenter, accommodating approximately 25,000 spectators.
In 2016, I had the privilege of participating in a Christian crusade hosted by Korean churches, featuring the esteemed Prophet T.B. Joshua from Nigeria as the keynote speaker.
As I entered, I couldn’t help but marvel at the advanced technology that had been harnessed to construct this colossal, versatile structure.
In the past, this facility has been used to host major events. For example, the first round of the 2017 World Baseball Classic, featured host nations Taiwan, South Korea, Netherlands, and Israel.

In 2019, the large Gocheok Dome hosted the opening round of Group C at the 2019 WBSC Premier 12. South Korea, Cuba, Australia and Canada competed in Group C.

Gwangmyeongdonggul Cave stands as South Korea’s premier themed cave park, offering an array of cultural and artistic wonders.
Its origins as a former gold mine, where precious metals like gold, silver, and bronze were once extracted, added a layer of astonishment to my visit.
Utilizing state-of-the-art technology, this space has been ingeniously transformed, inviting both local Koreans and international tourists to immerse themselves in its offerings.
Within this expansive underground expanse, the Wine Cave and Cave Aqua World beckon visitors to partake in novel experiences.
From Gold Falls to Gold Road, Gold Palace to Horror Experience, and from Cave Basement World to Underground Lake, the attractions unfold one after another.
Notably, the largest dragon sculpture in the nation stands here as well.
While many caves remain shrouded in darkness, Gwangmyeongdonggul Cave defies the norm.
Bright LED lights adorn its path, guiding visitors from the entrance to the depths of the subterranean realm.
And that’s not all; every weekend, a captivating Black Light Performance unfolds, captivating all in attendance.
It’s said that this distinctive cave isn’t just an attraction but a place of healing.
As you wander through its corridors, you’ll encounter numerous spots thought to hold healing energy, providing solace and rejuvenation for the mind.
Gwangmyeong Cave
Though I visited in 2015 when it was opened, this cave became one of Korea’s 100 top destinations between 2017-2018.
Ensure to plan a trip within the week. This is because from Tuesdays to weekends because it is closed on Mondays.
The tour inside is 30-40mins but could be a satisfying life experience.

The indoor cave Café is at Upcycle Art Center (2F). The menu varies with Korean meals and drinks, but you can only visit between 9 am-6 pm within open days – Inquiries: +82-2-2612-7710
There is also a small outdoor café located near the Cave Ticketing Booth No. 1. Here, there are Western meals like oven-baked pizza, hot dog, snack, drinks, etc. It is equally opened only from 9 am to 6 pm on days when the cave is open. – Inquiries: +82-70-4277-8907
Are you a shopaholic? Or would you want to buy a souvenir? There is a small Gift Shop beside the Cave Ticketing Booth No. 1. It opens and closes at the same time as the other places above. – Inquiries: +82-70-4451-3192

Who designed and made the famous South Korea statue?
Kim Yeong-won designed the statue. He is a carving and modeling professor at Hongik University. The sitting King Sejong was designed after a chosen competitive bet between a shortlist of artists recommended by the Korean Fine Arts Association and universities.
This grand statue commemorates the 563rd anniversary of the inception of the Korean alphabet by King Sejong.
Specifications and Impression:
In terms of structure and composition, the statue stands as a mighty golden figure, spanning a height ranging from 6.2 to 9.5 meters and boasting a weight of 20 tons.
When I stood beside it, I couldn’t help but feel dwarfed, akin to a tiny ant in its presence.
On sunny days, gazing up at its pinnacle requires quite a neck stretch.
The statue portrays King Sejong with one hand raised and the other gripping a book, a representation that honors his pivotal role in shaping the educational landscape of Koreans.
King Sejong’s Reverence:
Koreans hold King Sejong in profound esteem, a sentiment I came to understand during my studies at the Sunmoon Language Institute. His enduring legacy in the educational realm stands as a testament to this admiration.
Inscription Display:
Dominating the expansive side walls of the statue’s pillar are displays showcasing the entire Hangul alphabet characters, offering a tangible celebration of linguistic innovation.

Still as a memorial of his unique influence in Korea, in front of the statue there are small models of a celestial globe, a rain gauge, and a sundial, some of his traditional inventions.
I was surprised to know he was involved in the promotion of agriculture, literature, science and technology, as well as Confucian philosophy, in Korea
4. Visit a tourist Korean village settlement
Amidst the bustling expanse of Seoul, where towering skyscrapers and meticulously designed apartment complexes dominate the landscape, there exist pockets of neighborhoods that offer a glimpse into the past.
These enclaves boast ancient Korean-designed houses, each meticulously crafted in the distinctive and time-honored traditional style.
The structure of the Korean traditional house called a hanok consists of a wooden framework consisting of columns, crossbeams, purlins, rafters and various types of supports and connectors.
Hanok is also common in North Korea and China. It was first designed and built in the 14th century during the Joseon dynasty.
Generally, Korean architecture considers the positioning of the house in relation to its surroundings.
Speaking of the connection to the land and the rhythm of the seasons, the interior of these houses is thoughtfully designed, featuring wooden flooring where residents would gather, sit, and even sleep on cushions or directly on the floor.
In ancient times, an idyllic Korean dwelling was envisioned to have a mountain as its backdrop and a river flowing in front.
This symbiotic relationship with nature was paramount.
For a genuine immersion into Korean architectural nuances, you’ll observe that the forms and styles differ according to the region.
For instance, in the colder northern areas of Korea, houses took on a square layout with a central courtyard, optimizing heat retention.
Conversely, in the southern regions, a more open and L-shaped design was favored, adapting to the local climate.

At this tour visit, you can enter the house and walk around the courtyard. No one lives here.
There are just guards wearing traditional Korean outfits who show you around and explain a bit of the history.
It was a great experience for me.
5. Attend a South Korea traditional concert
The reverence Koreans hold for their culture is palpable, driving them to earnestly champion its promotion.
Traditional songs resonate throughout the air, becoming an integral part of the city’s tapestry. Regardless of the season, you’ll find melodies echoing along the streets and within dedicated venues.
Concerts are thoughtfully arranged, offering platforms for people to come together, sing, and revel in dance.
These gatherings are infused with an energy that’s nothing short of vibrant, as they brim with a multitude of performances and cultural spectacles that leave an indelible mark.
The spectrum of offerings ranges from music to mesmerizing art displays.
It’s a tranquil antidote to the rigors of daily life, providing a space to shed the weight of work or academic pressures.
What is arirang?
Among the collection of songs, some hold a unique status, collectively known as Arirang.
These compositions bear profound cultural significance, delving into themes of departure and reunion, as well as the spectrum of human emotions encompassing sorrow, joy, and happiness.
The tapestry of Arirang comprises various categories, distinguished by their distinct lyrics and melodies.
Notably, the thirty-six recognized versions of Arirang have undergone a continuous evolution, each contributing to the rich heritage.
On a fortunate occasion, my friends and I were welcomed into a complimentary tour group that culminated in a captivating concert.
I found myself entranced by the exuberant performances that unfolded before us.
Among the delightful showcases, it was the spirited singing and dancing by the young children that left an indelible impression on me.
However, it was the astonishing drumming presentation by the skilled women that truly took my breath away.

Though the arirang songs are not upbeat like the K-Pop famous brands, they can be very solemn and enjoyable. In some cases, it is great to just listen to the musical pitches of the singers.
At the end of the concert, all the foreigners at the event were invited to sing too.

Riverside Retreat: Immersing yourself in the city’s charm wouldn’t be complete without a visit to the riverside.
The Han River gracefully divides Seoul into two expansive zones, connected by a lengthy concrete bridge.
While the river itself doesn’t invite swimmers, its beaches beckon for leisurely strolls and serene rendezvous with nature.
My experience was amidst a fog-laden, breezy winter day, curtailing my time by the water.
To truly relish this experience, I encourage a visit during the balmy seasons of summer or spring. The vista is singular, and the air carries an invigorating essence.
War Museum Discovery: A pivotal part of our tour led us to a modest war museum.
This repository housed relics from ages past, showcasing a diverse array of ancient war artifacts, from weaponry to historical currency. It proved fascinating to discern the contrasts between bygone coins and notes and the modern currency in circulation.
The resilience of Korea’s history, and its commendable efforts to rebound from the ravages of the Korean War, garners admiration.

Unveiled on Earth Day in 1995, this remarkable natural marvel features a sequence of seven bridges suspended from trees, suspended over 130 feet above the forest floor.
Over a span exceeding 1,000 feet, these bridges mimic the appearance of traditional forest ropes, but upon closer inspection, reveal their robust composition of wire rope, aluminum, and wooden planks.
Ensuring safety, the bridges are securely netted to prevent any unintended falls.
At the entrance, you have the option to secure a tour guide, who leads you on a hike through the dense forest, where the symphony of biodiversity envelops your senses. I recall my excitement as we ascended a hut-like wooden structure to the lowest canopy, a mere few feet from the ground.
As I embarked on the walk, the bridge swayed gently with each step, a natural reaction to movement. The fear of heights gripped me intensely, prompting an abrupt return to the entrance area.
Reflecting now, it’s amusing to recall. Despite the encouragement from fellow adventurers, I found myself unable to surmount the swaying sensation.
I didn’t have the courage to explore the higher ones ahead. However, everyone I saw came back with a smile and positive comments. People attested it was a worthy experience. If you are not scared of heights, this will be one of the best ways to relax and tick your list of activities to do in Ghana.

These fabrics are renowned for their exceptional quality and vibrant hues, woven from cotton that exudes a spectrum of colors.
They are celebrated for their versatility, serving as excellent materials for crafting diverse types of clothing.
Procuring numerous fabrics and observing the market’s organization presented an enriching experience.
The market structure bore resemblance to Cameroonian markets, with the notable distinction being the prevalent use of the Twi language – a prominent local tongue.
This linguistic variance underscores the advantage of venturing there alongside a Ghanaian native for effective negotiation.
Within the market, narrow pathways meandered, navigating a vast building filled with myriad shops.
3. Relax at the Accra Labadi Beach
This natural marvel offers a serene sense of relaxation.
The expansive beach, adorned with fine brown sand, provides a soothing foot massage as you stroll under the sun’s warmth. While I refrained from swimming, the experience of the gentle seawater caressing my feet and rinsing away the sand was invigorating.
Much like in several other countries, the option to ride a horse added a unique dimension, allowing the sea breeze to embrace you in a distinct manner.
The sight of the grand white waves parading ceaselessly was a source of delight.
The beach had many small shops with umbrellas and chairs to relax and bask under the warm Ghanaian sun.
4. Attend service at a Ghana local church
The experience I’m about to share is subjective, particularly for those who are Christians.
For me, it proved to be the most fulfilling way to spend a Sunday morning.
The encounter was truly remarkable, reminiscent of scenes I had only witnessed in movies before. What stood out prominently was the sight of numerous individuals attending church adorned in their traditional attire.
Men donned robust fabrics elegantly draped over a single shoulder, while women graced the occasion in skirts paired with tops or gowns.
The meticulous craftsmanship of the clothing was evident across the congregation.
Our visit led us to the Larteh Presbyterian Church, nestled in the Akwapim-North region, a few hours’ drive from the bustling Accra city.
The aged church edifice greeted us with its intricately crafted gateway, complemented by a spacious building.
The worship service, conducted in the Twi language, was accompanied by Bible verses displayed in English on a notice board. Dancing and sharing smiles with the choir, who delivered songs in Twi while infusing unique melodies through their instruments, added to the joyous atmosphere.
This experience held a comforting familiarity, harkening back to my upbringing within the Presbyterian church.
Following the vibrant service, we embarked on a leisurely stroll down the narrow streets, venturing to explore the essence of local life.
5. Enjoy nature at the Aburi Botanical Gardens
If finding solace under the shelter of trees while breathing in untainted, fresh air appeals to you, then a trip to this botanic garden will be a truly rewarding endeavor.
Right from the entrance, the meticulously organized arrangement of trees offers a visual symphony of natural beauty.
Once inside, a diverse array of tree species unfolds, although the consistent size of most trunks speaks volumes about the extensive efforts invested in preserving these plants across generations.
During our visit, a stroke of luck allowed us to witness a wedding taking place.
It was remarkable to realize that within minutes, the open expanse could be transformed into an event venue.
The towering trees, with their colossal presence, acted as a splendid natural canopy, casting soothing shade and shelter from the sun’s rays.
A particularly astonishing sight that caught my attention was an immense tree adorned with intricate carvings.

The Ndere Culture Center is Uganda’s cultural hub, expanding over 9 acres of well-maintained African flora and fauna. It is characterized by indigenous historical items.
Nestled on a hill alongside the bustling neighborhood of Plot 4505 Kira Rd, Ntinda – Kisaasi Rd, Kampala, Uganda, this cultural center offers captivating performances by the Ndere Dance Troupe, captivating art exhibitions, and a spacious restaurant.
It stands as one of the most remarkable places I had the pleasure of discovering.
Every aspect reflects Ugandan history in a mesmerizing way, where the structures ingeniously blend traditional storytelling with modern artistic expressions.
What to expect
Before my visit, I looked online and found many comments describing it as a venue for traditional Ugandan dance shows. Regrettably, I couldn’t find the schedule in my search, so I ended up going on a day when there were no performances.
Nonetheless, I spent a delightful two hours basking in the sun while wandering through the expansive center.
Every detail left me in awe. Undoubtedly, it’s a cultural sanctuary that shouldn’t be missed if you find yourself in Kampala.

This area is an absolute delight for art enthusiasts. The intricacy in the artworks is truly extraordinary.

Within certain huts, there were exhibitions showcasing traditional artifacts that symbolized the daily lives of ordinary Ugandans from ancient times.
To my astonishment, a few of these huts had been given a modern touch.
While the roofs retained their thatched appearance, the walls were constructed with bricks, featuring contemporary windows and doors.
I heard that there was a staff quarter within the center.
Some individuals resided in the modern huts situated at the back.
These huts weren’t open for guests to enter, but it was a welcome relief to spend a few minutes in one of the vacant, open huts as a brief escape from the blazing sun.
The huts appeared to offer a cooler environment inside, likely due to the construction materials used for the walls.

I find wood art captivating, so I dedicated a few moments to appreciate the craftsmanship and dedication evident in the intricately carved chairs, drums, and various other traditional pieces. The wooden slippers brought a smile to my face.
Being African myself, the presence of woven bowls didn’t astonish me much, but I was pleasantly surprised to discover many of them adorning the walls within the reception hall, serving as decorations.
The cozy little library, adorned with wall paintings, exuded a peaceful ambiance that seemed perfect for both work and relaxation.
Garden, residential area, and outdoor auditorium
Adjacent to the grand theater hall, the backyard reveals a charming small garden.
Abundant trees create a natural canopy, offering a serene spot to savor the cool breeze and seek respite from the sun’s warmth. Tables and chairs are thoughtfully placed beneath the tree cover, inviting visitors to unwind while relishing the melodic chorus of birds fluttering among the branches.

Stone Town, or old town, was Zanzibar‘s first town. Even now, it boasts houses and structures crafted from stones. This picturesque island offers a wide array of activities to do and a restaurant or two at every street corner.
While both Zanzibarians and foreigners adore basking in the warm sea breeze, leisurely strolls across the island are equally rejuvenating.
Before we delve into dining options, let’s explore some distinctive facets of the city.

Zanzibar’s architecture holds a distinct charm. Almost all buildings, if not every one of them, are constructed primarily using stones.
During my time there, I observed a few construction sites where builders mixed fine white sea sand with cement.
This technique lends a sense of simplicity to the houses, likely leading to thicker walls. The plastering on these walls is smoother, offering an unusual touch when felt.

The majority of the people on the island practice Islam. It’s a common sight to see women and children wearing hijabs of various colors and materials.
While most men didn’t wear long robes and hats as I expected, many opted for traditional Muslim attire. This imparts a distinctive religious atmosphere to the city.
Additionally, mosques are scattered throughout the area, often found on nearly every street corner.
The island isn’t entirely tranquil due to the frequent loud calls to prayer broadcasted from these mosques.
There were around three mosques close to where I stayed. The loud prayer calls from outdoor speakers woke me up at 5 am every morning.
While taking a long walk, I noticed a few Catholic churches in the town center near Stone Town.
I tried to find an international church online, but none were easily located.
Language Barrier
The primary language spoken by most Zanzibar Islanders is Swahili. S
ome of them had a basic understanding of English, but they couldn’t engage in extended conversations using it.
Surprisingly, I encountered difficulties in communication.
Although some people were willing to help with directions, they couldn’t express themselves well and often chose not to speak.
Which restaurant should you go to?
The streets of the island are lined with an array of restaurants, each offering something unique for every kind of visitor. Whether you’re lounging by the waves at Jambiani or strolling through Forodhani Beach, there’s no shortage of dining options to tempt your taste buds. I found a mix of Italian restaurants and places with a more Western vibe, each providing a taste of something familiar but with a local twist.
What really stood out to me, though, was the effort each restaurant put into creating an atmosphere that went beyond just food. Many of the spots were decorated with intricate carvings and artistic pieces, turning the dining space into something more like a gallery.
The stylish décor was matched by carefully curated menus, and in some places, even the plates made me pause in awe before I took my first bite. It wasn’t just the flavors that captivated me—it was the artistry woven into every corner. From colorful paintings to detailed drawings adorning the walls, each place was a feast for the eyes as much as it was for the stomach.

At the distinctive boat-shaped restaurant perched at the edge of Farodaha Beach, is the Cape Town Fish Market Zanzibar restuarnt. I felt rejuvenated being so close to the water. The setting was stunning, with the ocean breeze adding a refreshing touch to the atmosphere. The prices, unsurprisingly, matched the fancy outdoor setup and high-end furniture, but the experience of working or chatting while feeling the gentle breeze made it all worthwhile.
On my first visit, I decided to try the lobster with cream sauce and fried potato chips from the menu. Within minutes, the server arrived with a generous serving— a lobster with its belly open, revealing a rich filling of shrimp bathed in a creamy sauce.
A side of sauce came along, though I couldn’t help but notice that the dish could have used a touch more salt to bring out the flavors. Despite that small detail, the meal was an enjoyable treat, especially with the beautiful beach setting.
On my second visit there, l drank only Coca-Cola while working. Acceptably, their internet was high speed and l peacefully worked as l watched the sunset.

Tucked away in the historic heart of Stone Town, there’s a charming restaurant housed in a grand train-like structure that has stood the test of time.
The wooden chairs, with their intricate carvings, offered both comfort and character, while the African-themed decor on the walls added a vibrant touch to the atmosphere. The Train House restaurant is a must-visit for the following reasons.
Whether I needed a spot to get some work done or simply wanted to enjoy a relaxed conversation, this place provided the perfect setting.
What truly caught my attention was their innovative approach to the menu. Instead of the usual printed version, they offered a scannable code that customers could use. To access the menu, I had to connect to their WiFi network, which made the experience feel modern and tech-savvy. It was a small detail, but it gave the restaurant a unique, forward-thinking vibe.
What did I order?
I opted for the grilled chicken and fries, but unfortunately, the wait was over an hour before my meal arrived. When it finally did, the chicken was slightly burnt and lacked seasoning or salt, which was disappointing. The salad seemed like an odd combination of cabbage, tomatoes, and cucumbers, all tossed together without much thought.
Although takeaways were offered, I found that dining in provided a better experience. The high-speed Wi-Fi was excellent, making it a great spot for both work and relaxation. Despite the potential noise from the nearby market, if you can tune it out, the atmosphere here is still perfect for enjoying a relaxing lunch or a refreshing drink.

The beachside restaurant had a simple, modest vibe, with a few worn wooden tables and chairs. Despite the breathtaking view, I was pleasantly surprised to find that the restaurant offered reliable Wi-Fi. While I enjoyed the setting, I watched as they harvested coconuts from the many trees on the property. The coconuts were larger than those I had seen elsewhere, and the juice inside was wonderfully sweet.
The restaurant’s main wall featured a striking steel fishbone decoration, adding a unique touch that was both simple and eye-catching.
Mama Naa restaurant
For those seeking an affordable meal, Mama Naa Restaurant in Jambiani is an excellent option. Despite the basic plastic chairs and tables, I had a hearty meal of rice and potato soup with beef that only cost 5000 TSH—the most budget-friendly meal I’ve had at any restaurant in Zanzibar.
The portion was generous enough to satisfy my hunger, and I was truly impressed by how much food I got for such a low price.
On my second visit, I choose fried rice. Apparently, the quantity was sufficient for my stomach demands but the taste wasn’t delicious. I wasn’t too surprised I got just a slice of beef, but I should have expected so.
Pilipili Restaurant
Located just a meter from Jambiani Beach, this restaurant offered an exceptional view. It’s one of two establishments near the expansive Pili Pili Hotel. I was particularly impressed by the wooden canoe-like tables set into the sand. It was paired with a solid cemented couch for seating.
The hut-style section of the restaurant was decorated with beautiful paintings on every wall, and the atmosphere was enhanced by pleasant, lively music, creating a perfect vibe for a relaxed dining experience.
The restaurant also offered a variety of local and international dishes, making it a great spot for any craving. I enjoyed the fresh seafood, which was perfectly cooked and served with a side of tangy dipping sauces. The staff were friendly and attentive, adding to the overall welcoming atmosphere. As the sun began to set, the view became even more stunning, with the golden light reflecting off the waves, creating a truly magical setting. Whether you’re here for a quick bite or a leisurely meal, this spot provides a perfect mix of good food, great service, and breathtaking surroundings.

I decided to try the green banana fish tapas, served in a coconut shell plate. While the portion was small, the combination of banana and peanut fish paste was absolutely delicious. It made it a unique and flavorful dish.

At the far end of Jambiani Beach sits the spacious Dhow Resort Jambiani Zanzibar restaurant. One evening, I relaxed on the outer bench-like seats, enjoying the soothing sea breeze. To add comfort, they provided soft cushions on the wooden seats, making the experience even more enjoyable.
Although I only ordered a drink, I was pleasantly surprised by a warm, unexpected treat. A waiter quickly handed me a wooden menu and took the time to explain their beverage options with great care.
The atmosphere at the restaurant was incredibly inviting, with the gentle sound of the waves in the background and the soft glow from lanterns lighting the space. The waitstaff were not only attentive but also took time to ensure I had everything I needed, creating a relaxing and welcoming environment.
As the evening wore on, the beach’s tranquility combined with the pleasant service made it the perfect place to unwind and enjoy a peaceful moment by the sea. Uncertain about what to order, the waiter patiently listened to my preferences and offered me a drink to try at no charge. I chose the Stony Tangawizi, a Coca-Cola ginger soda. It had a distinctive taste, with a bold ginger flavor that really stood out.
To my surprise, the waiter also brought out complimentary popcorn and fried peanuts. However, the peanuts had a spice I couldn’t quite place, making it hard to continue enjoying the free snacks.
As you envision these tasty experiences, rest assured that finding a good restaurant here isn’t difficult. Beyond the spots I’ve mentioned, there are plenty of eateries scattered along the streets. Even the beaches, offering something for every taste.

South Korea stands out not only as an educational hub in Asia but also as a tranquil sanctuary for studying. As I embarked on my Korean language journey in August 2015, uncertainty clouded my mind. I didn’t know how I would navigate life there.
Despite the unknown, I carried a myriad of expectations. They were fueled by the tales of fellow foreigners who had found success in this promising land.
Reflecting on my language learning journey, I realized the complexity of mastering new languages. Prior to my time in Korea, I had studied French as a native English speaker.
However, my experience with the Korean language at Sunmoon University for 1 year and 6 months was a whole new challenge. Here’s a summary of that transformative period.
Where is Sunmoon Korean language institute located?
Sunmoon University’s primary campus resides in Asan city, but the Korean language institute finds its home in the nearby city of Cheonan, just a short distance away.
Nestled within this compact campus are two prominent buildings, divided by a spacious sports complex.
The first building is exclusively designated for classes and administrative functions, while the second building serves as a dormitory, accommodating numerous foreign students.
The city of Cheonan is near Seoul and it has a unique historical museum.
Within the heart of the city, a plethora of activities await.
The bustling city center boasts an array of both Korean and international eateries, ensuring that no one goes hungry or struggles to find a place to dine.
Additionally, the presence of an intercity bus station and a conveniently located train station opens up access to a multitude of other cities across the country.
The large Shinsegae supermarket occupies a huge surface at this center with countless shops where you can buy almost everything from food to clothing.
During certain weekends, I eagerly joined my friends for lively karaoke sessions, and watching movies at the state-of-the-art cinema was an enjoyable pastime.
Situated a bit away from the city’s heart, the institute resided adjacent to a serene forested area.
While it could be easily identified by its prominent signboard and a designated bus stop along the main road, I often found myself indulging in leisurely two-hour walks from the campus to the city center.
Immersing in the verdant surroundings of the compact city, I relished capturing photos embracing or grinning beside street art sculptures.
The climate here exhibited distinct seasons: winter embraced snowy landscapes while summer brought scorching heat.
The Korean Language Institute’s structure
Every weekday morning by 8:30 am, all international students were required to gather at the main study block, a brief 7-minute stroll from the dormitory.
The classes were divided into various levels based on language proficiency.
A typical day comprised 4 hours of lessons, inclusive of breaks, during which students engaged in practical Korean language exercises under the guidance of their teachers.
Regularly, about every few weeks, level tests were administered to gauge progress and identify areas where support was needed.
The lessons predominantly revolved around dialogues, encouraging students to actively participate in Korean discussions.
Additional classes were occasionally provided for students like myself who encountered challenges while adapting to the language.
Each level was equipped with dedicated textbooks primarily featuring pictures and straightforward explanations, enhancing the visual appeal of the learning process.
Moreover, all classrooms were equipped with TVs and projectors, facilitating the integration of videos and audio materials into lessons to enhance efficient practice.
Every day, students were given homework to complete. Each classroom accommodated a maximum of 15 students, each occupying separate desks.
Classroom interactions flowed naturally, particularly for those students who were gearing up for the Korean Language Proficiency Test (TOPIK).
Among my most anxiety-inducing experiences was the day I had to speak in front of my class.
Delivering a presentation about Cameroonian culture in Korean remains etched in my memory.
Creating the PowerPoint presentation was straightforward, yet conveying my thoughts and ideas proved to be quite challenging. Despite the obstacles, I appreciated the numerous chances I had to actively utilize the language.
The Korean language institute’s dormitory
This spacious residence offers convenience to those seeking to avoid the hassle of commuting between the campus and the city.
The building stands tall with multiple floors.
The ground floor houses a gym, a store, a communal kitchen, and a restaurant.
Moving up to the first floor, you’ll find a spacious lounge. There are small conference rooms, and the administrative area for the dormitory.
Floors two through seven are dedicated to student accommodations. Each floor features a cozy sitting area that separates the male and female dormitories.
A crucial detail is that every student possesses a unique code on their student identity card. It grants them access to their designated hallway.
This ensures that gentlemen are unable to enter the ladies’ section, and vice versa. Within each section, communal showers and toilets are available.
The bedrooms are furnished with two bunk beds, accommodating four students. It also has a spacious study table with comfortable chairs.
Each evening, students’ presence is verified within their respective bedrooms, and the institute takes responsibility for ensuring everyone’s safety.
Meals are included in the tuition. So students can simply head down to the restaurant during specified morning and evening hours to dine.
As someone who is particular about food, I opted to cook in the student kitchen. I used the microwave to heat my meals, and storing them in the designated fridge within the corridor of the ladies’ bedroom section.
Korean language teachers
At Sunmoon, I had the privilege of interacting with some of the most accomplished professionals I had ever encountered.
Every one of them exuded an exceptional level of friendliness and approachability, always willing to lend an ear to students.
Their accessibility extended beyond school hours, and they readily provided guidance and assistance whenever requested.
Despite the toll that the demands of learning could take on my own demeanor, I couldn’t help but notice the consistent smiles on their faces, which served as a source of inspiration and encouragement.
Some of my Korean tutors
As we progressed through various levels, we were fortunate to have different teachers along the way.
This rotation brought a rich diversity of teaching styles and perspectives, enhancing our learning experience. At the culmination of each year, we celebrated with special photoshoots that were featured in the university magazine.
Additionally, every semester saw students and teachers collaborating in a range of extracurricular activities that were both lighthearted and inspiring. As a fellow language educator, I found myself learning valuable lessons from them.
It intrigued me that many of them refrained from using English in class, opting instead for full immersion, but I was appreciative of the abundant free counseling and encouragement they offered me.
Their advice to persevere resonated deeply.
Sports and music competition
Despite the stressful study life, the institute was intentional about creating fun activities for students. This aspect was the most unexpected for me and I enjoyed participating in many of them.
The singing competition
On a selected day, an exciting competition was announced to all the students. Although not everyone could participate, the entire student body was invited to join the festivities. The enjoyable evening commenced with students showcasing their singing talents, representing various countries.
Awards were presented to the standout performers, with the top prize being a bicycle.
While I don’t recall the specifics of the other prizes, I hesitated and felt bashful about taking part. However, some of my African friends provided the much-needed encouragement for me to give it a try.
They know I love singing and it was an opportunity to share my talent with others.
It was a struggle to choose a gospel song to cover but I ended up doing Chris Morgan’s song I do. After several contestants, I performed joyfully.
The audience erupted in enthusiastic applause and energetic dancing, likely due to the infectious afro beats and perhaps my singing as well. When the competition concluded, I was thrilled to be announced as the first-place winner.
In a state of surprise and joy, I brought the bike prize back to my dorm.
However, I found that the bike required professional assembly, and since I only had a short walk to and from classes, it wasn’t essential for me.
After a few months, I decided to sell the bike to an African friend who lived off-campus. The bike suited his needs perfectly for his commute between downtown and the campus.
Sports competition
A surprising event was the mandatory all-wide sports day, which took me by astonishment.
Early in the morning, both students and teachers gathered at the expansive sandy sports complex.
We were grouped and assigned distinct colored wristbands, indicating our respective teams.
The day involved friendly competitions, including running, ball games, and various captivating Korean cultural activities.
The atmosphere was lively, filled with students cheering, laughter, and mutual encouragement.
The victorious teams were rewarded with prizes.
As the day concluded, students reunited with their classmates and shared snacks with their teachers.
The entire event was meticulously coordinated by the university, creating an incredibly enjoyable and memorable experience.
Korean food
Another engaging activity outside of our regular classes was cooking.
Being a selective eater, I was initially convinced that I wouldn’t enjoy all Korean cuisine due to some unpleasant experiences.
However, I was pleasantly surprised when we were informed about a unique opportunity to have a break from our studies and participate in a cooking session with our tutor.
Our tutor, as always, had taken care of the groceries in advance. All we needed to do was join in the cooking process.
Gathering in the dorm’s student kitchen, we adorned ourselves with cooking aprons.
Our tutor, Teacher Park, presented us with images of the dish and provided insights into its ingredients and historical background before we commenced our culinary adventure.
Teacher Park skillfully assigned different tasks to each of us, irrespective of gender. Some were responsible for chopping, others for washing, and the rest for cleaning.
Once the cooking was completed, we gathered around a spacious dining table to enjoy the delectable meal.
Although I can’t recall the exact name of the main dish, we prepared kimbap and pork, accompanied by an array of side dishes.
These dishes were crafted with ingredients such as carrots, mushrooms, and various traditional Korean vegetables.
Korean culture lesson
On a different day away from our regular classes, we were escorted to a designated room on the campus.
Inside, an array of traditional Korean attire, known as hanbok, was on display. Each student was given a few minutes to peruse the collection and select a garment that resonated with them. The majority of the outfits were similar in design, varying mainly in color.
I distinctly recall picking a vibrant, long orange gown.
Once adorned in our chosen hanbok, we were guided to another area designed for picture-taking.
Here, we had the freedom to capture as many photos as we desired, either alone or with our friends, against a backdrop of intricate posters.
However, before delving into our impromptu photography session, we were provided with insights into Korean culture.
Furthermore, our teacher engaged us in discussions about the historical identity of Koreans and some of their cultural practices.
One of these practices involved the venerable tradition of honoring ancestors.
In this ritual, Koreans bow reverently by lowering their heads to the ground while kneeling—a gesture of respect and remembrance for those who have passed away. We were invited to partake in this gesture as well.
How we celebrated halloween
Back in October 2015, I can vividly recall joining in on the Halloween festivities.
This marked my very first foray into such an event. While I don’t personally subscribe to the deeper connotations of Halloween, the prospect of spending time alone in the dorm wasn’t particularly appealing.
Therefore, despite my reservations, I decided to partake. It was a campus-wide affair, taking place in the evening.
In the spirit of camaraderie with my friends, I painted my face in the likeness of a pumpkin and decked myself out in a witch’s costume.
The event was a lighthearted affair featuring dance performances and amusing games that evoked laughter and joy.
I was relieved to discover that there were no eerie or unsettling elements that might have made me uncomfortable.
Curiously, the institute thoughtfully provided an array of beverages for the students, excluding alcohol.
It was a welcomed respite from the usual exam-related concerns, offering a chance to simply enjoy the moment and unwind.
Out-of-city excursion
Another remarkable thing I did as a student was to be a part of the trip to Korea’s Disney World.Everland Resortis a beautiful theme park located in Yongin city.
The expansive park boasted a plethora of rides and enjoyable games. From the exhilarating twists and turns of the rollercoaster express to the fascinating zoo showcasing actual wildlife, there was an abundance of entertainment options to cater to all preferences.
Whether one’s inclination leaned towards enjoying live music performances or simply watching the exuberance of others as they embraced the various rides, the atmosphere was ripe with mirth. I distinctly recall chuckling at my own reactions, as well as those of fellow attendees who experienced a mixture of excitement and trepidation on certain rides.
Throughout the park, conveniently located food courts offered an array of culinary delights spanning different continents.
The Sunmoon University ensured that students were transported from campus to the park and even provided meals, turning the outing into a seamless and memorable experience.
As the day unfolded, a swirl of emotions ranging from elation to nervousness accompanied me through the various attractions. In the end, I was undeniably grateful to have been a part of the adventure.
Frequently, there was a new and exciting activity to partake in, occurring practically every other month.
At times, I found myself momentarily oblivious to the fact that I was attending school.
The institute made it a priority to shield students from being overwhelmed by the demands of language learning.
This was particularly crucial for students, including me, who were grappling with the linguistic challenges that were exacting a toll on our mental and emotional well-being.
My study experience
After making several unsuccessful attempts at the TOPIK exams and facing consecutive failures, I found myself sinking into a sense of discouragement that made it difficult to continue my studies.
Each time I received those failed reports, it felt like a heavy blow to my morale, especially considering the tremendous amount of time and effort I had invested in my daily learning routine. As I confronted my failures, I saw my enthusiasm for reading dwindle away.
By the end of the first year, I was on the brink of losing not just my academic motivation, but my overall sense of joy. This period of distress even took a toll on my physical health, causing me to lose weight due to the worry and stress.
I was plagued by persistent overthinking, and my spirits were at an all-time low, marking a stark departure from my prior experiences in academia.
However, with constant encouragement and support from my family, the Korean tutors, and my other friends, I took the burden off my shoulders. The teachers and students have several group chats on Kakaotalk ( a famous Korean chat application). Here, students can directly contact teachers and ask questions if they feel uncomfortable asking in class.
My perspective of TOPIK
As the sixth month came to a close, an overwhelming sense of joy enveloped me upon hearing the news that I had successfully passed the TOPIK – level 3 (intermediate).
The anticipation leading up to this moment had been a mix of hope and apprehension, as I had grown mentally weary from repeatedly encountering the word “failed” in my previous score reports.
Fearing yet another disappointment, I hesitantly reached out to my Korean language tutor and implored him to check the results on my behalf. It was around 4 pm when I received the news, and upon seeing the word “pass,” I was overcome with emotion.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I made my way to the room where my friends were, and I shared the incredible news with them. In that moment, my tears flowed freely as I released the built-up tension and celebrated the triumph that had finally come.
After a few minutes of tearful elation, I quenched my thirst with a drink of water, allowing the cool liquid to temper the intensity of my emotions.
Disadvantages of studying at Sunmoon Korean language institute
Just like everything in life, there is always a negative side to every positive thing. Some of the few limitations of studying at this institute include the following.
Language learning is a unique journey for each individual. In my case, tackling the Korean language presented an immense challenge.
The intricacies of the language were undeniably formidable, a sentiment that even seemed acknowledged by the Korean government, evident by the absence of a speaking section in the TOPIK exams back then.
While I’m uncertain if this has changed in recent times, during my period of testing, only writing, listening, and reading components were assessed.
The allocated time for many of the questions was quite limited.
My recommendation
My advice for those embarking on the path of learning Korean is to approach the endeavor with determination and diligence.
The language encompasses aspects ranging from mastering the alphabet to comprehending the structure of its characters and understanding cultural nuances. Especially for English speakers, the journey can be quite challenging. However, this challenge doesn’t equate to impossibility.
I’ve personally known numerous English speakers who not only succeeded but also achieved fluency in a relatively short span of time.
By acknowledging the anticipated challenges, the learning process need not become an overwhelming source of stress.
Lack of contact with Koreans
Due to its location slightly removed from the city center, the campus posed a challenge in terms of interacting with Koreans.
The campus predominantly comprised foreign students at various language proficiency levels.
Engaging in language practice within the campus community wasn’t as effective, as everyone was on their own learning journey. In order to engage with native Koreans, students needed to venture into the city. Some go by visiting bars, clubs, cafes, and similar venues.
For individuals like myself, who were more reserved and hesitant to initiate conversations with strangers in public spaces, the task of utilizing my Korean language skills proved difficult.
Within the dormitory, the desire to alleviate language-related stress often led to conversations in English with fellow English speakers and in French with my French-speaking friends.
Resorting to our native languages provided a sense of comfort. This resulted in limited or no use of Korean beyond the classroom.
It would have been more practical and feasible if the language institute were situated within the larger Asan campus.
The need to travel to the main campus for TOPIK exams highlighted the disconnect between our ability to access the main campus. It established lasting connections with native Koreans. The geographical separation posed a challenge to fostering meaningful interactions and friendships with locals.

Load of Korean language homework
One challenge that I encountered was the substantial amount of daily homework assigned.
While I acknowledge the importance of practice for language learning, the volume of homework often left little time for a life outside of class. It felt as though I was dedicating more hours to studying than what I considered normal.
After our daily classes, we were presented with numerous pages of homework. It is frequently consumed around 4 hours or even more of my time.
Additionally, there were exercises to complete over the weekends.
Considering the dynamic nature of Korea, it’s likely that circumstances at the Sunmoon Korean Language Institute have evolved since my experience in 2015.
While my account is reflective of that specific time, it may serve as a snapshot of that period. I assume that the core teaching methods and study structure might remain consistent. Although, I can’t provide a definitive update on the current situation.
Despite any changes, the serene atmosphere of the campus and the exceptional teachers will always hold a special place in my memories of studying there.

Whether you’re a resident of South Korea or planning a visit, Everland resort should be on your list of relaxation destinations. Spanning around 1,200,000 square yards, this park offers a plethora of rides and activities.
The joy my friends and I experienced at this park was beyond measure.
Everland, often referred to as Korea’s equivalent of Disney World, is situated in Yongin, a serene city in Gyeonggi-do province.
This resort is enveloped by rejuvenating natural surroundings. Statistics affirm its status as Korea’s largest theme park, and it secured the 19th spot globally in 2018. With annual reports indicating over 5.85 million visitors, Everland remains operational year-round, offering activities suitable for each season.
My visit in November 2015 proved to be an incredibly fulfilling way to embrace the holiday spirit during Christmas.
The expansive theme park is split into five distinct zones, and I couldn’t explore them all. There was an abundance of attractions and activities. As I disembarked from the bus, the intricate Christmas decorations immediately caught my attention.
Vibrant, sizable Christmas trees adorned nearly every corner, their bright lights creating a joyful atmosphere.
Upon entering the park, the first zone you’ll encounter is the Global Fair.
It’s home to numerous eateries and souvenir shops, offering unique artifacts at reasonable prices. The entire area was perfect for taking pictures.
Everland Safari tour
Were you aware that you can actually enjoy a mini-safari experience in Korea?
Contrary to common assumptions for Africans, this was my initial encounter with numerous wild animals up close.
The zone that amazed me the most was Zootopia. As you might expect from the name, Everland features a small zoo where visitors can enjoy a safari ride. This compact zoo houses a variety of animals, ranging from birds, polar bears, penguins, lions, tigers, and sea lions to bears and primates. The setting is open, allowing the animals to roam freely, mimicking their natural habitat.
While some areas of the park offer limited views, to observe the animals up close, you can hop on a safari bus.
I joined one of these buses and had a fantastic time observing the animals and capturing photos. During the ride, I had the chance to see elephants, a zebra, a giraffe, geese, guinea fowls, and more.
These few minutes were truly worthwhile as it marked my first time being so near to wild creatures.
Towards one side, there is a petting zoo featuring animals like goats and sheep.
Interestingly, there’s even an elephant named Kosik who can mimic Korean words. If you’re not yet satisfied with your nature exploration, you can venture into another zone for more discoveries.
The European Adventure
Upon my arrival, I found myself pondering why this zone was named after a continent.
However, it became clear to me later that the name was chosen due to the presence of European architectural styles.
This part of the park boasted a spacious garden adorned with exquisite flowers and even had a charming train ride.
Although the ride was brief, it had a distinct feel to it. You’ll also come across numerous games and arcades scattered around this area.
One of the standout attractions here was the Mystery Mansion. This adventure involved entering the mansion and taking on the challenge of shooting ghosts that unexpectedly appear.
The experience was absolutely terrifying for me. I was filled with fear and hesitated to enter. The guard tried to reassure me that it wouldn’t be too dreadful, but I soon regretted believing him. Fear is a powerful emotion, and I couldn’t have anticipated just how terrifying the objects inside would be until I stepped in.
For those who revel in horror and eagerly await Halloween, this might be an exciting venture.
The place is designed with an eerie atmosphere, resembling a haunted house, and there were staff members present to assist people like me who became incredibly frightened and anxious. As I left, a sense of relief washed over me because I couldn’t help but scream whenever a ghost appeared.
My memories of this place are hazy, as my heart rate skyrocketed and I even fainted. It took me a few minutes to regain my composure once I was outside.
My opinion about the roller coaster ride
As if the day hadn’t already been filled with enough fear, I decided to join the lengthy line for Korea’s wooden roller-coaster, T-express. The name alone should have given me a hint that this would be a high-speed and intense ride, and perhaps I should have reconsidered.
However, I was curious about the fun I might miss out on if I didn’t give it a try. Despite waiting for over 30 minutes, I found myself unwilling to abandon the line. Eventually, my turn came, and to my surprise, I ended up in the first row.
With a mix of excitement and trepidation, I got on board, hoping to have an enjoyable experience, although I had no idea what was in store for me.

My recollection of this place is blurry because my heart rate had soared to an alarming level, and I almost fainted. It took me a few minutes to regain my composure outside.
As if that wasn’t enough heart-pounding excitement for the day, I decided to join the lengthy queue for a ride on Korea’s wooden roller-coaster, T-express. The name should have been a giveaway that it was a high-speed experience, and I probably shouldn’t have taken the ride.
However, I was curious about the fun I might miss if I didn’t give it a try.
Despite waiting for more than 20 minutes, I found myself unwilling to abandon the line. Finally, my turn came, and to my surprise, I ended up in the first row.
My experience
As the ride began, it started off slowly, as expected, and then the speed gradually increased.
Once again, I found myself screaming at the top of my lungs, my voice cracking from the intensity. While I was struggling to keep my wits about me, my neighbor was happily smiling, laughing, and even taking pictures to capture the exhilarating experience.
My mind was in turmoil, and fear was taking over. Suddenly, I made a decision to shut my eyes tightly and grip my seat with all my might.
This way, I wouldn’t see the dizzying heights and spins. In that moment, I told myself not to succumb to the stress, and that’s how I managed to make it through the ride.
I promised myself right then and there that I would never subject myself to such a high-speed roller-coaster again. The area had plenty of restaurants around, providing a place to rest and recover from the adrenaline rush.
The American Adventure
Once more, I was taken by surprise to find this theme in Korea.
This particular section was dedicated to American history themes. One of the attractions was the Rodeo, an exhibition where cowboys showcase their skills in riding broncos, roping calves, and wrestling steers.
Another theme was from the 1950s, represented by Rock Ville and its music scene. Close to the smaller X-Train roller coaster, live bands performed, adding to the vibrant atmosphere.
On this occasion, I decided to skip the ride and instead immerse myself in the music. Some of the performers sang a mix of both Korean and American songs.

As anticipated in a sprawling amusement park like this, this section was also brimming with numerous rides. One highlight was a spacious area where characters from Aesop’s fables were brought to life through various themes. Adjacent to the array of rides, a selection of restaurants provided convenient dining options.
By the time I left, I had lost track of the number of rides I had experienced. While I didn’t manage to explore every ride in every corner, I was content with the memorable adventure. It had been a day filled with excitement and a range of emotions.
The sheer size of the park and the evident technological efforts put into maintaining the multitude of rides left me impressed. It felt like the machines were in perpetual motion throughout the day. While I don’t recall the exact entrance fee, I do remember feeling that it was money well spent.
The level of satisfaction was exceptionally high, which is why I wholeheartedly recommend this place. Comprehensive information can be found on their website, including details about their frequent events.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stay overnight in Yongin, and I’m uncertain if the Everland resort offers accommodations.

Women’s movements and the leadership of women have spearheaded significant progress in advancing women’s rights, resulting in transformative change.
Around the world, March 8 is designated by United Nations Women’sagency as International Women’s Day.
Women around the world mark this day in various ways.
In South Korea, I recall women exchanging verbal greetings among colleagues. While my Italian friends mentioned the tradition of gifting flowers to female friends, colleagues, and mothers. A Ukrainian friend told me, their husbands or boyfriends take them out for special lunches and give the flowers.
Interestingly, in Cameroon, the celebration takes on a vibrant carnival-like atmosphere with elaborate day-long festivities.
Since its inception, Cameroonian women have embraced the annual celebration with distinctive enthusiasm.
Each year’s theme holds significance, like this year’s focus on promoting women in technology.
The 38th edition of International Women’s Day in 2023 centers on “An Inclusive Digital World: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality.”
How is the International Women’s Day commemorated?
In every Cameroonian regional city, town, or village, you’ll find a prominent stadium-like structure by the main road.
This place serves as a hub for parades celebrating independence, labor, youth days, and other significant national occasions. Every 8th of March, women gather here, ready to join the parade.
The event commences with a brief ceremony, gathering esteemed dignitaries, both male and female, at the grand stand. During this segment, various government officials deliver speeches. Notably, in 2024, the female Deputy Mayor of the Buea Council graced the occasion. This was marking a significant shift from past norms when all mayors were men.
An unexpected highlight was the inclusion of female pastors from select churches invited to offer prayers for peace in Cameroon. Thier prayers included peace for the success of the event in Buea. While this may not be customary in other regions, it was a welcome acknowledgment of spirituality.
The Regional Delegate of Women’s Empowerment, representing the Ministry of Women Employment and Family, delivered an extensive speech summarizing the ministry’s initiatives, particularly emphasizing their impact through sports and other activities for women.
Concluding the speech section, the regional Governor of the Southwest encouraged and motivated women to assume supportive leadership roles within their households.
To showcase the rich diversity of Cameroonian culture, various tribal groups, upon government invitation, participate by presenting traditional dances and songs.
This offers a unique opportunity to witness the vibrant performances of different tribal groups from the region.

Who receives awards?
Following the speeches, awards were presented to individuals, regardless of gender, who have made outstanding contributions to women’s causes in the city.
Notably, in 2024, one recipient was honored for her distinguished career achievements and activism for women, while another, the head of an NGO named Reach Out, was recognized for her commendable projects promoting gender equality.
A notable surprise came from Brasseries du Cameroon, who generously awarded one million to a woman recognized for her diligent efforts in transforming vegetables into powder, including plantain and cocoyam flour, as well as crafting local snacks like chingching.
For many, receiving recognition from the government is a point of pride, celebrating their impactful work.
In Buea, the capital of the Southwest region, a renowned male dreadlocks stylist was recognized in 2023 for his contributions to enhancing female beauty.
He stands among a few men who specialize in hairstyling for women. Additionally, the first female taxi driver was acknowledged for breaking gender stereotypes by pursuing a profession traditionally associated with men.

How is the parade done?
From all corners of the country, a multitude of women of diverse backgrounds unite to take part in this lively event.
The parade features multiple groups, each symbolizing a distinct sector.
These sectors encompass sovereignty, defense, and security; general and financial administration; education, training, employment, and research; communication, culture, youth, sports, and leisure; health, social affairs,churches and social security; infrastructure; production and trade; civil society; religious and family associations; as well as women’s network associations across the city.

In a well-coordinated march held at the heart of the national or regional city centers, women engage in joyful conversations with friends and forge new connections, all while wearing smiles and clapping.
The parade, which typically lasts around two and a half hours or less, is graced by the presence of esteemed government officials, depending on the city. For instance, in Yaoundé, the First Lady, Chantal Biya, wife of the President of the Republic, is a regular attendee.
In other regions, governors, delegates, and respected figures from the area represent the government to express solidarity with women. They are expected to clap as each group passes.
The pinnacle of the day arrives with the grand procession of various women’s groups.

Sometimes, they chant the renowned “We are one… We are together” song, invoking the timeless spirit of unity and support among Cameroonian women.
This gesture garners a resounding applause and standing ovation from all attendees at the presidential or regional podiums. This is accompanied by warm smiles and clapping.

The array of offerings was vast, ranging from food items to artisanal crafts. In particular, this year, I purchased plantain flour with the intention of making pancakes.

After the parade, a unique luncheon is organized by Mrs. Chantal Biya at the Hilton Hotel, drawing distinguished dignitaries.
Concurrently, women throughout the country engage in their own festive activities.
Restaurants, hotel dining spots, and bars are booked as women unite to revel in the evening.
Joyful laughter, animated discussions, delightful cuisine, refreshing beverages, and enthusiastic dancing to lively music persist far into the night.

Every year, the Ministry of Women’s Affairs office produces exclusive fabrics, displaying an exquisite palette of lively hues.
These fabrics proudly showcase a prominent inscription of the year’s theme, corresponding date, adding an individualistic flair to their artistic patterns.
Throughout the month of February, anticipation builds as women enthusiastically acquire these fabrics adorned with the national flag’s vibrant green, red, and yellow colors.
Teaming up with skilled tailors, they collaborate to bring their envisioned styles and designs to life.
As a result, the city center transforms into a mesmerizing tapestry of diverse women proudly presenting an array of stylish creations, forming a captivating mosaic of intricate designs and patterns.
Does every lady wear the women’s day uniform?
While numerous women diligently sew the national fabric in preparation for this day, there are some who choose not to participate.
Personally, like many others, I’ve only worn the fabric a few times, mainly because my workplace provided it for free, with the expectation that we wear it during the parade. In such cases, we only needed to sew it and be present, reducing the financial burden.
However, there are women who opt to wear their group or company uniforms instead. Some wear t-shirts with inscription of their companies. For this event, I decided to wear one of my own fabrics and simply observed the proceedings as a spectator.

1. Climb mount Cameroon
Locally known as Mount Fako, this towering giant is the star attraction that steals the hearts of countless visitors who find their way to this charming city. One look at its breathtaking silhouette rising dramatically into the clouds, and you’ll instantly understand why travelers can’t resist its pull.
But Mount Fako is more than just a pretty backdrop.
Its cool, refreshing climate once made it the perfect escape for early foreign settlers during colonial times. Historical accounts tell us that the Portuguese first set foot here, followed later by German and British colonial occupants who established their homes around the mountain before pushing deeper into the hinterlands. The traces of their presence still whisper through the city’s architecture and culture today.
For adventurers, the real magic lies at the summit. Reaching the top rewards hikers and climbers with a panoramic view so stunning, it feels like standing on the edge of the world. It’s an experience many describe as priceless—a breathtaking moment where nature’s grandeur unfolds in every direction.
If there’s one place in Buea that truly captures the spirit of wonder and adventure, Mount Fako is it.

Embarking on the climb with my family during the early 2000s was undeniably tiring, yet it proved to be a rewarding endeavor.

When does the game start?
This full-day event kicks off at 6 am, with registered athletes hailing from Cameroon and various parts of the world converging at the Molyko stadium.
The number of participants tends to fluctuate annually, with certain years witnessing an estimate of over 500 individuals. The runners are a diverse group, encompassing children aged 6 to 18 and adults spanning various age ranges.
The racecourse distance is allocated based on age categories. Young participants have a relatively shorter distance to traverse.
Additionally, the event features specialized teams of three members each, engaging in relay races. These relay teams are tasked with running to a specific location in proximity to the mountain’s edge.
Typically, they complete the race as pairs, and their achievements are acknowledged separately with distinct rewards.
How is the game organized?
This competition places significant emphasis on gender inclusivity, as male and female runners undergo distinct assessments.
The event bestows six prominent awards and honor prizes upon participants who complete the mountain-to-stadium route swiftly. This results in separate recognition for the top three male and female runners.
As the runners conquer the mountain’s ascent and descent during the morning and midday hours, local residents gather along the main road to provide enthusiastic support. Commuters offer words of encouragement, accompanied by resounding applause as the runners pass by. Some individuals extend water to the runners, while others offer their companionship by jogging alongside them as a motivational boost.
Within the stadium, a distinguished audience comprising government officials, foreign embassy representatives, and sports enthusiasts assembles.
Cultural troupes engage in traditional dance performances, while acclaimed musicians take the stage for live music renditions. The entrance to the stadium is enveloped by an animated crowd, energetically cheering and congratulating each athlete.

Peculiarities of the Bakweri culture and people
During festivals, weddings, or funeral ceremonies, you’ll often find many Bakwerians adorned in their distinctive traditional attire, accompanied by cheerful smiles.
These outfits are gender-specific, with men donning a white shirt paired with a Sanja, a thick loin cloth. They accessorize with prominent beads, a rounded hat, and a waist-tied headscarf. Meanwhile, women elegantly wear a long and substantial dress known as Kaba, paired with low-heeled shoes and a sizable headgear.
When gathered as a group, they can sing and animate events for hours, moving to the rhythmic beats of melodious drums.
Buea boasts unique festivals held in different parts of the city that serve to rejuvenate and celebrate the rich culture.
These events, referred to as Malay, attract both Bakweri natives and outsiders, fostering a vibrant atmosphere of cheerfulness and vibrant colors. Spectators engage in lively discussions and share stories about the city’s history.
Amidst the festive ambiance, captivating wrestling performances take center stage. The wrestlers, believed to possess spiritual prowess, demonstrate remarkable strength in their battles, which continue until one wrestler’s back touches the ground. Sporting bare chests and feet, they command the crowd’s attention and admiration.
Cheers resonate through the air as spectators root for their favorites, adding to the excitement of the spectacle. Ultimately, victorious wrestlers earn not only financial rewards but also the admiration and respect of their community.

Long before the arrival of Europeans, the e-Mokpwe festival marked the transition from one year to the next, signifying a time of gratitude and celebration. Families would come together for this occasion, sharing a feast that included Nguma Ngowa (young pigs), domestic chickens, mefasu (large dried fish), ekpwa-koko, and ngonya mosaka.
Annually, the dates for each feast were determined at the main markets of Muea, Misellele, Ewonji, Tiko, Gbwinga, and Vatoke. The end-of-year celebration, known as e-Ngando ya lisuku la Mwa, took place in December (Muyuli Sali), following the lunar month of November’s (Muyuli me Ndene) disappearance. The New Year’s festivities followed shortly after the appearance of the lunar month of January (Mbanje).
During these feasts, young individuals aged around 5 to 15 years gathered in numerous families to cook their meals under open-air shelters within their compounds. Boys took on the responsibility of erecting the shelters and supplying wood and water, while the girls prepared the food. Notably, the shelters were distinct due to their roofs made of palm leaves – a construction style that persists to this day.
Adults, meanwhile, prepared their meals at home. As the afternoon approached, the triumphant Elongi, a procession leader, would parade around the village while singing:
“Eat and drink, but do not forget our Lord, the Creator” (“elee, e-nyo ee, esi keka lifonga Tata Iwonde”)
“A New Year with new fashions” (“Mwa nofenya na veya fenya ee, Mwa mofenya”). Yoo, veeva, yoo veeya, yoo veeva; meendidi o-see, meendidi o-see”)
Nowadays, these events are not celebrated at the exact times, but sporadically, there are cultural Malay dance and wrestling events.
