Cheonan, a charming small city located just a few kilometers away from Seoul, offers a hidden wonder in the South Korean peninsula.

Whether you prefer traveling by bus or train, this city is easily accessible and definitely worth a visit.

As the largest and most densely populated city in Chungcheongnam-do and the third-largest in the Hoseo region, after Daejeon and Cheongju, Cheonan-si holds a significant place in South Korea.

One of the highlights of your trip to Cheonan is the Cheonan City Museum, a must-see attraction, especially if you are a history fanatic.

The best part? Unlike many museums around the world, this gem doesn’t have an admission fee.

That alone makes it a perfect destination for a short, one-hour visit.

Inside, you’ll be greeted by a well-lit and captivating world of South Korean history.

When I visited the museum back in 2016, it was open and staffed with welcoming personnel.

Although you can take your time exploring the exhibits, it’s essential to plan your visit within specific hours.

Koreans value time management, a commendable trait, and the museum operates from 09:00 a.m. to 18:00 p.m. during March to October.

If you visit between November and February, the operating hours are from 09:00 a.m. to 17:00 p.m. Just remember to enter the museum at least an hour before closing time to make the most of your visit.

What time can you visit the museum?

Before you finalize your travel plans, be aware that the museum is closed on Mondays, January 1, Lunar New Year’s Day, and Chuseok (the harvest festival on the 15th of August by the lunar calendar).

Although the museum itself closes at night, don’t miss the chance to catch a glimpse of the magnificent view from its illuminated facade.

Cheonan city has held significant importance as a strategic traffic hub throughout history. The Cheonan Three Way Intersection serves as a central point from which trains, subways, and high-speed electric railways connect in all directions across the Korean Peninsula. The city’s charm lies not only in its beauty but also in its rich historical landmarks, including the ancient signal-fire tower, Seong-hwan Station Office, and the captivating history of Cheonan Station.

As I explored the museum further, I discovered other fascinating exhibits, such as communication and traffic vehicles from the Joseon Dynasty era. These exhibits offer guests a unique glimpse into the lives of people from the past, allowing us to understand how they navigated and lived during those times.

My stroll through this room on the first floor left a lasting impression on me. As I ascended to the upper floor of the museum, I was uncertain of what new treasures awaited me.

To my delight, I stumbled upon a room that truly transported me back in time.

This room was a vivid representation of where scholars once gathered before attending state exams, creating an atmosphere of intellectual exchange and camaraderie among travelers from different parts of the Korean Peninsula.

It served as a social hub, where people could come together, interact, and share their experiences.

Surrounding this gathering spot were taverns and inns, which were essential in ancient days when people traveled to Cheonan using the royal carriage.

Passing through the Hoseo Boundary Government Hall, the gateway to the Hoseo region, was an exciting experience in itself.

The culture and folklore of Cheonan came to life before my eyes. I could imagine people leisurely sipping wine under the shelter of weeping willows, enjoying the breathtaking scenery around them.

The ambiance was infused with the charm of the olden days, as people shared interesting and pleasant folk tales of Cheonan, adding to the enchantment of the place.

What did the locals do?

The air hummed with the melodies of local folk songs, and as I immersed myself in the surroundings, history seemed to transcend time.

It felt as though I had stepped into a different era, where the past was not just a distant memory but a vibrant reality.

The captivating exhibits and carefully crafted setting made it easy to imagine the lives and experiences of those who once graced these streets.

In that moment, history was not just a collection of facts and figures; it was a living, breathing entity.

The museum’s portrayal of Cheonan’s past was so authentic and captivating that everything seemed real. I felt deeply connected to the stories and the people who shaped the city’s history.

It was an unforgettable experience, one that allowed me to truly appreciate the rich tapestry of Cheonan’s past and understand how it continues to influence its present-day charm.

As the title suggests, this room on the second floor of the museum is dedicated to exhibiting relics dating back to the Old Stone Age up until the period of the Three Dynasties, all of which were excavated in Cheonan.

Here, visitors can learn about the origins of Cheonan’s name, which was given during the 13th year of King Taejo of the Goryeo Dynasty (930) when the Cheonan District was established.

The remnants on display in this section include fascinating bronze artifacts, offering a glimpse into the city’s ancient past.

Adjacent to this room, a second exhibition space showcases Cheonan’s national defense remains and other relics. These exhibits highlight the city’s geopolitical significance throughout history, shedding light on its role in regional defense strategies.

Towards the edge of the second floor, visitors will find another engaging exhibition room.

This particular room is dedicated to showcasing the excavation process, providing a unique opportunity for guests to understand the fascinating field of archaeology.

Through interactive displays and informative presentations, visitors can gain insights into how relics and historical artifacts are carefully unearthed and preserved by archaeologists.

This section not only enriches the overall museum experience but also fosters a deeper appreciation for the painstaking efforts and expertise required to uncover and preserve the invaluable pieces of Cheonan’s history.

By offering a window into the world of archaeology, this exhibition room enhances the visitor’s understanding of the city’s rich heritage and the dedication involved in preserving it for future generations to cherish.

5.Cheonan City Museum History Room

As I reached the top floor of the museum, I was delighted to find history and culture beautifully interwoven throughout the exhibits.

One section showcased countryside villages that thrived between the Goryeo Dynasty and the Joseon Dynasty, providing a glimpse into the daily lives of the past.

In one corner, a small stone monument caught my eye, representing the temple named Bongseon-honggyeong, while in another corner, a magnificent bronze bell belonged to the Cheon-heung temple.

Among the treasures decorating the walls, I couldn’t miss the portrait of the esteemed royal secret commissioner, Mun-su Park.

What truly surprised me was the sight of a written royal order for exempting compulsory labor, which held historical significance within the feudal territory.

The fact that it was displayed on the wall of Gwanh-dell Temple added to the authenticity and importance of the museum’s exhibits.

The room also highlighted the Cheonan government office, Jiksan District office, and Mokcheon Confucian Temple and school, each playing a vital role in shaping the region’s history and culture.

My experience

After immersing myself in this fascinating journey through time for over an hour, the most heartwarming surprise awaited me.

The museum staff kindly presented me with a free postcard book, featuring nearly 10 pages of bright and captivating pictures describing each floor and its major attractions.

It was a thoughtful gesture that allowed me to cherish and share my wonderful experience at the Cheonan City Museum with my family and friends.

This gesture truly added to the overall warmth and hospitality I felt during my visit, leaving me with not only cherished memories but also a tangible memento of this remarkable journey into the rich history and culture of Cheonan.

Considering the rapid pace of growth and continuous changes in Korea, I can imagine that the Cheonan City Museum has likely expanded its offerings and exhibits since my last visit in 2016. As of 2023, this captivating place may have even more exciting things to see and explore.

During my visit, the museum already boasted an impressive collection that brought history to life.

This allows visitors to touch relics, engage in interactive activities, and immerse themselves in the rich cultural heritage of Cheonan.

However, with the passage of time, the museum might have introduced new sections, updated existing displays, and added more insights into Korea’s intriguing past.

Did you realize that a trip to Cameroon is akin to exploring the vast continent of Africa itself?

This unique nation encompasses a bit of everything that you’d find across various African countries, earning it the nickname “Africa in miniature.”

Cameroon stands out due to its remarkable blend of diverse cultures, languages, and geographical landscapes.

Let’s delve into the captivating attractions that make Cameroon a sought-after destination for tourism.

1. Relax at Cameroon beaches

Cameroon’s coastline is adorned with beaches of various hues, a phenomenon that raises intriguing questions.

How can the same ocean that fringes the country offer sands of different colors along its shores? The answer remains a mystery.

Hailing from the coastal city of Limbe in the South West, I must agree with both tourists and fellow Cameroonians that the light brown-sand beach in Kribi holds a unique charm. Often referred to as the “Cameroon Riviera,” this beach attracts a constant stream of visitors every weekend.

Douala, the economic capital, also boasts a beach. Historically, it served as a significant point of entry for colonial rulers.

Today, it functions as a vital seaport facilitating the movement of goods for both imports and exports.

Strolling along these shores, one can’t help but relish the soothing touch of the sand and the rhythmic waves.

Another common sight across these beaches is the presence of seaside vendors. These people expertly grill an array of seafood such as fish, shrimp, and crabs.

For Cameroonians, a trip to the beach is incomplete without savoring the taste of the renowned “burning fish” – grilled fish, a local delicacy.

It is often served alongside fried ripe plantains, bobolo (fermented cassava), accompanied by zesty chili pepper sauce and creamy mayonnaise.

The prices may vary based on portion size, but indulging in this culinary experience is a must to truly immerse in the Cameroonian way of life.

2. Hike through the desert

I have yet to explore a destination in the Far Northern region of Cameroon.

Friends who have ventured there describe an environment defined by scorching heat and humidity, a testament to its desert-like attributes during the dry season.

This area is nestled within the Sahel, the semi-arid belt that flanks the expansive Sahara Desert.

Inhabitants of this region are predominantly cattle herders, resulting in beef being a staple of their diets.

For those with a penchant for venturing into arid landscapes with challenging humidity, the tranquil aura of the desert and the embrace of the sun’s warmth could offer a distinctive adventure worth experiencing.

3. Climb Cameroon mountains

Cameroon has several mountains and hills around the country, but the Fako Mountain (the tallest in West Africa) remains the most beautiful hiking spot for hundreds of tourists yearly.

Standing atop the mountain’s summit evokes a sense of accomplishing a lifetime goal. Enthusiastic climbers will relish ascending the steep slopes while capturing the beauty of unique flowers through their lenses.

But be prepared for the chilly temperatures that await you.

Each February, a significant event unfolds: the International Mount Cameroon Race of Hope. This race welcomes participants from all walks of life—both Cameroonians and foreigners alike.

As the clock strikes 6 am, runners gather along the Molyko stadium main road in Buea, ready to embark on their journey to the mountain’s peak.

The challenge lies in making it to the top and back in the shortest time possible, with the swiftest individual earning the prestigious title of winner.

Notably, the competition features distinct categories for different genders.

The top three male finishers and the top three female finishers are recognized separately. This event acts as a unifying force, bringing together a diverse crowd and injecting vibrancy into the city’s streets as street food and various items are bought and sold by many in attendance.

4. Explore the rainforests

Cameroon’s rainforests serve as rich reservoirs of biodiversity, housing an abundance of plant and tree species, along with a plethora of other living organisms.

The lush density of the forests, accompanied by the melodious symphony of birdsongs echoing through the trees, offers a serene haven for those who cherish the wonders of nature.

Whether you venture into the rainforests of the Bertoua region or explore those in the South West, you’ll find captivating sights in every corner of the country. Indeed, Cameroon boasts extensive and untapped forested areas.

Regarding the utilization of timber and wood resources, both the government and the people of Cameroon reap substantial benefits.

The government engages in exporting timber to other nations, while many individuals, seeking alternatives to costly cement, construct homes using wood.

This symbiotic relationship with the forests sustains a valuable economic and cultural thread within Cameroon.

5. See wildlife at the savannah

Cameroon’s vast savannahs offer an ideal setting for captivating safari tours. Explorers seeking a firsthand encounter with diverse animal species will relish the opportunity to explore these vibrant landscapes.

Within Cameroon’s savannahs, a rich tapestry of wildlife awaits, featuring an array of remarkable creatures such as lions, tigers, elephants, and graceful antelopes.

Embarking on a safari adventure here promises an unforgettable journey into the heart of the animal kingdom.

The Waza national park is home to many of these animals.

Despite the current challenges posed by political instability, the North and Extreme North regions of Cameroon were previously cherished destinations for safari enthusiasts.

These areas used to be vibrant hotspots for safari lovers, offering thrilling opportunities to witness a diverse array of wildlife and experience the untamed beauty of nature.

Historical Sites in Accra, Ghana

Ever dreamed of a country where history comes alive and every corner tells a story? Welcome to Ghana, a true gem of West Africa.

With its vibrant culture, booming economy, and countless sites waiting to be explored, Ghana offers travelers an experience like no other.

From the moment I arrived at Kotoka International Airport, I was struck by the genuine warmth and hospitality of the people.

Meeting my cheerful Ghanaian friends only reinforced it—here, kindness isn’t just a gesture, it’s a way of life. And it’s this unique blend of history, culture, and heartwarming friendliness that makes Ghana a destination you simply cannot miss.

What are the historical sites?

When I first set out to explore Ghana, I quickly realized that history here isn’t something tucked away in books—it’s all around you.

WalkWalking through forts, castles, and ancient landmarks, I could almost hear the stories of the people who lived here. They struggled and triumphed. Each site felt like a window into Ghana’s past. It connected me to events that shaped not just the country, but the entire region.

As I wandered from one historical site to another, I found myself captivated by the tales they held. They revealed cultural treasures. They quietly taught important lessons.

Every place I visited gave me a deeper sense of Ghana’s heart. It showed me a nation that cherishes its heritage. It lets its history live on in the present.

1. The Cape Coast Castles historical sites

The Elmina Castle and the Cape Coast Castle are gigantic buildings located on the Cape Coast southwest of Accra.

Within these somber walls, echoes of heart-wrenching history resound.

These former dungeons bear witness to the harrowing truths of the trans-Atlantic slave trade. Once, they served as transit prisons where countless Africans endured a dreadful wait, knowing their destiny was to be transported as slaves to distant continents.

These sites hold an abundance of evidence, shedding light on the grim reality of the slave trade. It’s perplexing to think that these spaces, originally meant for trading commodities like gold, clothing, and timber, became the holding grounds for innocent human beings.

The conditions were inhumane, lacking hygiene, filled with torture, death, and dark, underground chambers.

How did I feel?

As an African who had studied the painful chapter of the Slave Trade in my Secondary school African history studies, visiting these locations brought the history to life.

Walking through these old buildings, I couldn’t help but reflect on the immense mental and emotional burden our ancestors carried—their psychological, emotional, and physical suffering.

Even as the guards shared the grim facts with us tourists, the weight of it all was overwhelming. The sorrow and disbelief hung heavy in the air, and it was difficult to grasp the unimaginable hardships our great-grandparents endured under colonial regimes.

The trans-Atlantic trade, which primarily targeted Black Africans, began in the 14th century, leaving deep scars on human history. These forts, with their tragic stories etched into every stone, stand today as silent witnesses to that dark era. They rightly deserve recognition as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Now, these castles function as history museums. They preserve the memory of a painful past while also reminding us of the incredible resilience and strength of those who survived unimaginable suffering. Walking through them, I felt a deep connection to history—and a renewed respect for the courage of those who came before us.

2. The Independence Square

Furthermore, Ghana’s wealth in resources was so abundant.

It earned the illustrious title of “Gold Coast” during the colonial era. Like many other nations, Ghana also experienced the reigns of various colonial powers.

The list of colonial masters includes the French, the English, the Dutch, the Danes, the Swedes, the Prussian Brandenburgers, and even the Portuguese. This succession of European incursions and struggles for control over Ghana’s territory underscored the nation’s unique historical journey.

Amidst numerous conflicts with colonial powers and tireless advocacy against oppressive colonial policies, the renowned visionary Kwame Nkrumah finally proclaimed Ghana’s liberation from British colonization in 1957.

In a powerful public declaration, Kwame boldly stated, “The African People are capable of managing their own affairs, and Ghana, our beloved country, is free forever.”

This momentous declaration marked a significant turning point in Ghana’s history. It signifies the triumph of the Ghanaian people in their pursuit of self-governance and independence.

On March 6th, 1957, Ghanaians celebrated a hard-fought independence, a day etched into the nation’s history. In the heart of Accra stands a monumental gate-like structure, proudly marking this milestone. At its pinnacle, a striking black star shines brightly—a symbol of triumph over colonial rule.

Ghana holds the distinction of being the first sub-Saharan African country to break free from European domination. And this remarkable achievement is captured in the rich history and culture of these sites.

For anyone visiting Accra, these landmarks are must-see destinations. They offer a profound glimpse into Ghana’s pivotal role in shaping world history.

Traveling abroad always sounds exciting before you leave—but once you’re on the road (or in the air), the reality of adjusting to a new environment can hit hard. In this post, I’m sharing some of the toughest moments I faced while traveling—and how I learned to adapt along the way.

Travel has always been one of my greatest passions. That said, long hours on planes and standing in endless airport queues are far from fun. But the moment I roll my luggage out of the airport and take that first deep breath of a new country’s air, a wave of relief always hits me. Somehow, that first breath always feels fresher—no matter the season.

Whether I traveled for tourism or study, I left every country with a bucket full of lessons—some deeply personal, others shaped by cultural encounters.

Usually, it’s common to look for accommodation before booking a flight.

In my case, I scroll through countless reviews and swipe through dozens of photos—but I often finalize my reservation only after buying the ticket.

I’ve learned, however, that not every place lives up to the polished images or glowing reviews online. When you arrive, the reality can sometimes fall short of expectations.

The disappointment on my face usually doesn’t go unnoticed by the accommodation staff. After several frustrating experiences, I adopted a new approach: I now book only one night for the first day. This gives me a chance to assess the place in person—whether it’s a dusty room, poor ventilation, or a noisy neighborhood.

The next day often turns part of my sightseeing into a mission to find a better spot.

I walk long distances, juggling GPS directions while scouting hotels. It’s physically and mentally exhausting. But when I finally discover a cleaner, quieter, or more comfortable place, the effort feels completely worth it.

Over time, I’ve developed a mental strategy: stay flexible and lower your expectations. No hotel or Airbnb will ever feel exactly like home, and I’ve learned to accept that. These are simply temporary resting places along the journey.

3. Be ready to spend money when traveling

Traveling is undeniably expensive, and sticking to a budget can feel overwhelming.

But for those of us who love the journey, spending a little extra here and there becomes part of the experience—and sometimes even part of the fun.

Personally, I’ve rarely followed my exact travel budget. There’s always something unexpected: higher hotel rates, surprise food costs, or last-minute flight changes. No matter how carefully I plan, unplanned expenses always show up.

I’ve learned to travel with more money than I think I’ll need. It’s a simple habit, but it has saved me countless stressful moments—like scrambling to get emergency funds from back home.

That extra cushion gives me peace of mind. It lets me focus on enjoying the trip instead of panicking over unexpected costs.

4. Be patient with learning a new language

Before I started traveling, patience—especially in communication—wasn’t my strong suit. But one challenge quickly rose above the rest: language.

I learned that to truly connect with people in a new country, I had to make an effort to learn their language. At first, it was overwhelming. Everything I thought I knew about communication had to be adjusted.

Learning Korean, for example, was a steep challenge. Its structure was completely different from English. I constantly questioned its logic. Adapting to new characters, memorizing sounds, and understanding unfamiliar sentence patterns felt impossible at times.

Over time, I realized I needed patience—with both myself and others. I had to let go of rigid ideas about how language should work and learn to respect each culture’s uniqueness.

Building patience also meant humility: admitting my way of thinking wasn’t the only way, and recognizing that people see and express life differently around the world.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s this: traveling only works when you have an open mind—especially when it comes to embracing new languages and cultures.
